Right now . . . Around 78th Street in the Waldo area, Kansas City police and media are at the scene of yet another Kansas City homicide investigation.
This might be an important turning point for the City - Unofficially, Kansas City marks homicide #50 so far this year.
We'll update this post as more details come through . . . But the right now we're looking at a SIGNIFICANT increase in Kansas City murder and violence from this year over last.

REPORT:
"Shortly before 3:00 PM KCMO officers were dispatched to 205 W. 78th Street on a reported shooting. On arrival they located a white male victim in his mid 50s on the ground in front of the residence who had apparently been shot. Officers began to provide CPR to the victim until KCFD arrived. Eventually the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Other officers responded and began canvassing the area for a suspect. They located a subject matching the suspect's description a few blocks to the south and took him into custody. He was reported to be a black male in his mid thirties. Initial investigation indicates parties located at the residence became involved in a disturbance which ended in the shooting. Identification of all involved in currently in progress."

ReplyDeleteThis really isn't big news. Every year for the last--what?--few? several? Kansas City has ranked about 100 murders per year. It's halfway through the year. That gets you 50. No shock here. It's unfortunate and stupid and unnecessary but no big revelation. It would be a big revelation if it were only 40 or 30 or less.

Mr. Kevin Evans (MO Rage) (No relation but I would be honored greatly if it were!!), I have to respectfully disagree about this incident being big news--it is very big news. Right now KCMO has 50 homicides compared to 47 at this point last year. This is not a large increase, but it is an increase, and that is what is alarming: I spent several hours today checking crime stats from cities all over the country, and to the best of my knowledge KCMO is the only large city in the nation that has more homicides in 2013 than at the same point in 2012. And, a lot of these drops in homicide totals are quite large: In NYC there were 181 homicides at this point in 2012, now there are 141, in Chicago there were 222 homicides at this point in 2012--right now there are 150; in Philadelphia there were 175 homicides that this point in 2012, now there are 113. And, yes, we have had over a 100 homicides for a number of years--but that too is big news in light of national developments. In NYC in 1992 there were 2250 homicides--in 2012 there were 346. In Wash/DC there were 450 homicides in 1992--in 2012 there were 88. All of the country cities have one-fourth or one-fifth as many homicides as they did during the "crack wars" of the early 1990's--KCMO's homicide totals have only dropped about 20% since the early 1990's. And, there is also the per capita homicide rate: NYC has 16 times our population and three times our homicide totals, DC is 50% bigger than we are but has significantly fewer homicides, etc. KCMO has the fourth highest per capita homicide rate of any city in the nation. So, the homicide surge in the black neighborhoods of KCMO, now entering its sixth year and showing no signs of stopping, is indeed big news and deserves priority attention by the city's political class. ReplyDeleteBring back project ceasefire that actively sought the arrest of felons in possession of firearms. The three years this initiative was a priority was the last time homicide totals totaled less then 100 for 3 straight years. The US Attorneys office got stiff sentences for Felton's in possession and the results were proven. This will require more car checks and ped checks by officers and more prison space but the murder rate would for sure drop!!
