Recently, Alonzo Washington revealed a great deal of insight when it comes to the reality of the local media scene.
Check some rather controversial tweets from Mr. Washington:
"Over my many years as an activist in KC I have had black news talent call me daily & complain 2 me about racism @ the work place."
"Many of the black news talent that have been fired & many that still work in local news have told me about the racist things that whites say"
"The sad fact is that most of blacks in the news game fear if they fight back they won't be hired by other news organizations."
"Plus, the anchor desk in KC is as segregated as a water fountain in the 1960's."

Now, competition is tough for EVERYONE in the local news game. But like it or not, for folks who know any of the few mainstream newsies of color . . . These statements will ring true off the record.

ReplyDeleteSo what racist things did they say? I can understand you protecting your source, Alonzo, but if you have intregrity, you'll be true to the quotes and you'll name the station and time period they were uttered, and by whom.
ReplyDeleteFact is, there IS racism, as any TKC reader knows. But there's also 'black' racism. What are stations doing about it... are they bringing in lecturers like most companies do to discuss the various diversities, namely racial, gender, generational?
When I was in, TV stations never brought people in to talk about ANYTHING related to the craft or the workplace. Course, it's the era of HR self-protection and has been for twenty years. Its it better now, or the same? Too expensive or too much time to pull people out of their newsgathering, I dunno.
I'm not sure racism will be stamped out for much of the century... because it's tribal in human nature, and various cultures have no interest in blending into the mainstream culture. That in itself will always keep the races, genders, and generations apart.

Why would anyone in the news business confide in Alonzo. Short answer, they wouldn't, haven't and never will. Alonzo is the biggest racist, liar and welfare fraud in the metro.
