Kansas City politics and media is dominated by stereotypes and special interests.
A recent story about a plea deal amid a case of federal voter registration fraud brings so much nasty Northeast bickering back to the forefront of our local discourse.
Northeast News covered the story more accurately and objectively than any other media outlet: Judge finds fraud in 2010 primary
As always, TKC is more interested in politics and cultural logics of any story related to this wicked little town.
What's most important and what mainstream media, especially Kansas City Star Columnist Dave Helling, has overlooked is this:
MO House Rep. John Rizzo hasn't been connected, charged or even indicated in any wrongdoing related to a plea deal by his uncle.
But instead of giving this fact a proper mention, what I witnessed was KC Star Columnist Dave Helling looking to push a political hit piece just like any blogger would and stumbling quite a few times and with repeated updates to get his facts straight.
Perspective: Kansas City Star absolved Mayor Sly James in their reporting of how he pulled strings for a hot mess involving his son's car. But recent reports have been used to imply that MO House Rep. Rizzo was somehow responsible for the actions of an uncle when there is ABSOLUTELY NO POLITICAL OR CAMPAIGNING CONNECTION BETWEEN THE TWO FAMILY MEMBERS. And that's the hypocrisy . . . Mayor Sly's son can name drop the Mayor to the cops during an arrest and his Mayor Dad helps him with a car registration infraction but reports from Dead Tree Media rush to absolve our so-called "First Family". . . A Kansas City Neighborhood Rep. clearly doesn't earn the same favoritism.
But that's just an example . . . Let's go even deeper:
Kansas City Star reporting revealed their tacit acceptance of ethnic stereotypes. Real Talk that maybe Rep. Rizzo might not even like but conveys how TKC really thinks bout this topic: Helling's sloppy reporting seemed powered by so many local political operatives employing tired old perceptions about MO House Rep. John Rizzo's last name and his Italian-American heritage. No, not all Italian-Americans are tight with every member of their family despite what trash TV and Oscar-wining movies might suggest. This ASSUMED and somewhat stereotypical connection promoted and capitalized upon by way of The Star's report is my main problem with blogging disguised as journalism.
Again, it's worth repeating: Critics and even federal prosecutors haven't found any connection between MO House Rep. John Rizzo and his family member who made a plea deal to this instance of voter registration fraud. This IMPORTANT fact has been glanced over by editorialized mainstream media reports.
On the bright side, three years have passed since this primary and in that time MO House Rep. John Rizzo has accomplished quite a bit.
MO House Rep. Rizzo has:
- Pushed forward quite a bit of public safety legislation in the Missouri House.
- Helped bring back KCPD foot patrols to Northeast during the opening stages of an experimental law enforcement program.
- Partnered with Reps. from the urban core.
- Started the discussion on more appropriate hours for Parks in Northeast.
- Earned a greater role in Missouri Democratic leadership and raised the profile of his district.
Meanwhile, his opponent in the Democratic primary that was so hotly contested has disappeared from public life.
One last note, I find that most of this criticism comes from the middle-class new gentry in Northeast and their constant whining needs to be addressed: Yes, it's nice to see a politico who is too busy to hand-hold the loudest complainers in Scarritt Renaissance but instead treat them as one of many neighborhoods that comprise Northeast Kansas City.
More than anything MO House Rep. John Rizzo has succeeded in developing political partnerships with Kansas City's most diverse collection of neighborhoods - This impressive feat is unequaled by most elected officials and at the early stage of his career this talent to form coalitions deserves support from people who respect our Democratic process.
More real talk: Most of the Italian-Americans in Kansas City have left behind their Northeast roots but the ones who stayed have demonstrated their dedication to the idea of "community" beyond mere demographics - Again, this is another big reason why TKC still enthusiastically supports MO House Rep. John Rizzo.
TKC hopes that this post has explained the political support of this blog for an elected official who has accomplished solid legislative work while his critics and Dead Tree Media columnists simply play politics.
A bit verbose but I get your point.
ReplyDeleteGood blog about the abuse of the star
ReplyDeleteNo way he did anything wrong except be related to people who made a mistake. I have never witnessed such drama in any story they have written. There lack of sales has forced them to write fiction.
ReplyDeleteevery politician cheats
ReplyDeleteHelling is a yellow sheet reporter ,I never thought the Star would bow to that level.
ReplyDeleteWhy aren't there betting pools on fraud predictions on these elections?
ReplyDeleteLets not forget ALL the politicians who made Rizzo's Election Fraud possible: Mike Sanders (for helping cover up the Election Board Fraud), Dan TARWATER (for using County money to produce Rizzo election materials), Scott Burnett (for being Henry Rizzo's errand boy), Judge /County Counsellor Nixon (for suppressing the facts from trial), Shelly Macthomas (for helping "fix" the ballots), Scott Wagner (for doing nothing in exchange for an uncontested race), and former State Rep, John Burnett (for doing nothing in the hope that he would be rewarded with that County Prosecutor job he always wanted).
ReplyDeleteJohn,
ReplyDeleteSo what if people don't know about your guy friends at the Red Front. Still nobody actually likes you. You'll see it in their faces today. Everyone in your party who wasn't directly involved in your fraud assumed there had to be some truth to it. Now they know and will start avoiding you. Everyone who matters knows this house was right next door to yours, and that you lied to the press about it. So now its not only sad that you haven't shown your face in 3 years in your district and people who hated Royster now make jokes about you at public neighborhood meetings, even when other state employees are present, or sad how after 4 attempts and $130,000 of stolen money later you still couldn't get elected without throwing your own namesake uncle under the bus (what a typical Italian) and directing contracts and assignments to the ethnic groups who scared off your papi's generation from your area (because they were too busy killing themselves to band together); no, the worst part is how your dad has been talking about who you should be more like, because he even sees you as a joke in the neighborhood, and to the family legacy (as absolutely fucked up as that already is, its still known for doing SOMETHING and your dad was never a public coward). No one who liked your dad likes you, and now no one who disliked your dad thinks you are any different. Except weaker.

John Rizzo: Uhh. I know…no, they’ve, they’ve lived in the district.
Amyr Hawley: Yeah…
John: They’ve lived in the district, they lived in the district during the election.
Amy: But they don’t now…
John: Uh, I, I, I’m not, I, I don’t believe so, no.
Rizzo's uncle was a political campaign contributor.
ReplyDeleteSee Missouri Ethics Commission Financial Reports submitted by John Rizzo.
Yes, there is a connection.
Yes, Tony, you ARE a fucking dumb ass.
That's a really WEAK connection.
ReplyDeleteIs President Obama responsible for the actions of everyone who donated to him?
Part of Rizzo's uncle's plea-bargain was that the Feds wouldn't prosecute Rizzo's aunt, who ALSO ILLEGALLY VOTED.
ReplyDeleteThat's TWO votes that should be taken away from Rizzo, which moves his "victory" to - a tie, and then a loss.
Never mind the other dozens of "votes" that came from Jackson County Land Trust properties that nobody lived in.
Oh, yes, the investigation is continuing.
Helling should be working for the national enquirer. Instead of the Star no wonder they are losing readers
ReplyDeleteSure it is. Because the Feds read TKC! Nope, that's just the hopes and dreams of people who can't let go of 2010.
ReplyDeleteThe Italians who "support" Northeast are the ones who DONT support Rizzo.
ReplyDeleteYou think all Italians are corrupt? Fuck you, Tony.
Royster please get to your medicine
ReplyDeleteMoreno get a life. It's over
ReplyDeleteTony should go back to spraying graffiti on walls.
ReplyDeleteThe story is about Rizzo lying, and about everyone who helped him lie.
If all the above is true why aren't the Feds admitting it cause its another dream that Moreno has perceived. And I am also sure Helling would have published it.
ReplyDeleteJohn Rizzo doesn't attend neighborhood meetings. The only time I ever saw Rizzo at Pendleton Heights was when Will Royster was giving a briefing on SOAP/SODA. Rizzo listened (and probably learned something, for a change), but then he got his dad to block the anti-drug anti-prostitution steps needed from Jackson County.
ReplyDeleteNice "Neighborhood" help, John. What a dork.
TKC's blog is like Rizzo's couch in a psychiatric office ... he can fantasize, rant, vent, cry, and express his greatest fears in a place of safety.
ReplyDeleteBut then there is the REAL world.
His district is bigger than Pendelton Heights. That was kind of the point of this article. Too bad some people can't get out of their own neighborhood.
ReplyDeleteStay to the back pages of these blogs there you can promote all the lies and half truths you can think up.Its what you are good at Moreno and Royster you have had your five minutes of fame now take your happy pills and go to the the Red Front and brag about it.
ReplyDeleteJJ, every in the House is going to be thinking you are a cheat and liar now when they look at your face. Look in their eyes, JJ, you can see it.
ReplyDeleteName one neighborhood meeting event that jj rizzo name came up and there wasn't snickering from the residents and board members. You might fool others but no Northeast resident ever sees JJ at any meetings or ever hears from him or even about him. He is totally disconnected from the community and now he should even be ashamed to think he can show his face. Go ahead, ask him the last time he attended a public meeting with residents.
ReplyDeleteI love this. Had Cindy Circo, Theresa Garza Ruiz or any other politician who Tony doesn't like had relatives commit voter fraud in their own election, we all know he would be all over it. But, the uncle of John Joseph Rizzo committing voter fraud in John Joseph Rizzo 's district? No connection there! Hahahahhaha! What a joke.
ReplyDeleteJohn Joseph Rizzo is a fraud. He stole the election. This is just one example of the fraud seen in that election. This blog supports election fraud. Period. End of story.

ReplyDeleteWhat is a back page of this blog?
Is that like a back stall in a bar where you (John) hang out?
Isn't the Legislature in session? John, shouldn't you be in session, rather than posting on TKC?
ReplyDeleteIsn't the Legislature in session? John, shouldn't you be in session, rather than posting on TKC?
ReplyDeleteI'd like to dare Rizzo to attend a meeting at Pendleton Heights - a neighborhood that Rizzo's corrupt paid-off buddies gerrymandered out of his district because P Heights supported Royster.
ReplyDeleteOh, Wait - P Heights isn't in Rizzo's district anymore, so Johnny Jo doesn't need to answer for his lies.
Hey, neighborhood peeps, John Rizzo doesn't come to Columbus Park meetings either, so don't feel snubbed. Never seen him in his own neighborhood association meeting even one time in all the years I've been going.
ReplyDeleteJohnny Joe Rizzo has not attended a single Scarritt, independence plaza, Columbus park, lykins, Sheffield, cliff Drive, ne chamber, parks and rec, kcpd, or any other northeast area community meeting in 7 years. I guarantee you that and challenge proof for otherwise
ReplyDeletePendleton is where Rizzo paid Farah Abdi to use Somali Foundation money to heard Somalis into the polls and cast votes for them.
ReplyDeleteThat is in the public records from the court case.
No wonder people there hate Rizzo. No wonder Rizzo wanted his dad to have that neighborhood removed from the district.
Rizzo was a no-show at the NE Chamber Candidate Debate with Royster. I was there.
ReplyDeleteBobbi Baker was pissed, and so were all the Chamber attendees.
Rizzo is a scam.
Rizzo admitted in taped and aired interview that his uncle and aunt lived right next door to him.
ReplyDeleteLiar!
Wow! Even Kraske called him out! Kraske has been a big Rizzo softball pitcher for years, but now he's tired of being lied to.
ReplyDeleteJohn Rizzo doesn't even live in his district. He lives up north near his uncle.
ReplyDeleteSome really nasty stuff here. I think it speaks to the level of hatred of just a few people. Northeast neighbors are much nicer than this and they have more class..
ReplyDeleteHey, uh, ya, you know, with a name like Valenciano, well, it has a lot of vowels. I thought she was dark olived Italian. I like the way she screams when she's in joy-pain
ReplyDeleteNew for Tony: your boy, John, didn't initiate any legislation or dialogue. He signed his name to anything he could sign.
ReplyDeleteI was at a Parks Board meeting when his opponent introduce the Car Free Cliff Drive Program, which the Parks Board passed, and Rizzo literally jumped into photographs with Will Royster to try to claim coattails.
Everyone saw it. John should be embarrassed, but he has no class, so he doesn't realize this.
Gross and really gross. I guess that represents the best of Rep. Rizzo's critics.
ReplyDeleteMy dad still likes because I share his livestock fetishes. I like male squirrels. The tails, the tiny little bony penises, the claws that dig into my thighs..... Aaaaaaaaarrrrrrggggghhhhhh! Makes me Alfredo all over my truck cab
ReplyDeleteTony, I liked the picture you posted of John Rizzo wearing a Hoodie in session at the Capitol.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure the people he represents like seeing their representative looking and acting like a typical street gang member.
I'm glad I moved.
You always know its a Rizzo post when Tony goes into full censorship mode. Way to be, Mr. freedom of speech. Guess it only is freedom of speech when you aren't on a family payroll.
ReplyDeleteHow quickly we change subjects when we know we are a liar. Thanks Moreno
ReplyDeleteJohnny Joe Rizzo, Amy Hawley says hi. oh snap, she is about to say a lot more than that....
ReplyDeleteHey Johnny Joe Rizzo, how is John Moretina feeling right now? Worth being yet another Rizzo/Moretina convicted felon just to see you ruin your career? Hahaha, epic burn out, man. Truly epic.
ReplyDeleteI want TKC to sensor these comments and even more comments. Most of them are pretty disgusting.
ReplyDeleteAnd name spoofing is illegal.
But to look at this place is seems like most of the shit is still around and all over the walls.
SPAM is not freedom of speech.
Shut up xalti you dumb shit.
ReplyDeleteYou don't even live here!
I don't have a problem with it, xalti. Whats illegal about my name besides all my time in jail and court and other illegal family members and crooks and losers?
ReplyDeleteyou must be confused about who these people are xalti, but we are all first name basis around here so dont crap your britches.

ReplyDeleteI dont know y he doesnt, he banned Chuck off of yhe whole blog for nuthin
You can't ban people using blogger.com, they don't allow it and the function doesn't exist. Grow up Chuck!
ReplyDeleteWhat's the big deal? Attacking the sanctity of the ballot box? Hey, it's no big deal. And besides. We don't like Royster, so it's OK to steal the election from him.

Royster’s adviser, Chris Moreno, says that voter records provided by the Kansas City
Election Board show that three people voted in the primary for Missouri’s 40th House
District, giving their address as 515 Holmes Road. Based on an obituary that appeared in
the Kansas City Star, listing family members of the deceased, the three individuals appear
to be Rizzo’s aunt, uncle and cousin.
Public records show that the three persons have paid property taxes in Clay County. At
least one on-line residential directory shows them living at a Northland address.
There may be some explanation for why the trio was on the voting list for the 40th House
District, which is in Jackson County, not Clay. But Rizzo isn’t providing it.
“I’m really done answering questions about all this stuff,” he said. “I can’t do it anymore.
I have to take the advice of my people and just stop talking about it.”

would love to answer all these questions, but every time I do, it gives more play to these
things in the news. I know this is the first time we've talked, and I'm sorry it has to be on
your watch, but today it has to stop."

A new charge raised this week — that relatives of Rizzo voted in the 40th district
when they live elsewhere — appears to be groundless. The family had lived in the district
for some months recently. (**Chris Moreno talked to Barb after she wrote this article
and she told Chris that JJ explained that his aunt and uncle moved down to this address
over the summer, registered to vote on the last day allowed by law, and voted August 3rd.
Right after the election, they got sick and had to move back up North to Clay County.
Barb did not find this account suspicious)

Yes, the Rizzo-Royster race turned on voter fraud
It now appears that the wrong candidate was declared winner of the 2010 Democratic primary in Missouri’s 19th District.
The issue of John Moretina’s residence was raised after the election. Rizzo at the time told me his uncle had lived in his district for some months recently, and was residing north of the river because of health problems.
I’ll eat a bowl of crow, here. I was too willing to accept Rizzo’s explanation

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — The uncle of a Democratic Missouri lawmaker has pleaded guilty to voter fraud in an election that his nephew won by a single vote — a circumstance that the lawmaker described Tuesday as "an unfortunate situation."
John Moretina, 60, pleaded guilty Monday in federal court to giving a false home address that allowed him to register and vote in an August 2010 primary election in the Kansas City area. His nephew, John Joseph Rizzo, won a Democratic primary for a state House seat on that date by a lone vote and went on to win the general election that fall.

ReplyDeletehttp://www.bizjournals.com/kansascity/news/2013/04/04/rizzo-car-dealership-files-chapter-11.html
ReplyDeleteA used car dealership owned by former Jackson County legislator Henry Rizzo filed for bankruptcy April 2 to avoid paying a judgment in a civil lawsuit.
Last May, a Jackson County jury awarded $8,000 in actual damages and $30,000 in punitive damages to Anthony James, who tried to buy a car from Kansas City Wholesale Motors LLC, for violations of the Missouri Merchandising Practices Act. The dealership refused to give back James’ $500 down payment when the sale didn’t get finalized, according to his lawyer, Fred Slough of Slough Conneally Irwin & Madden LLC.
Judge David Byrn later tacked on $78,480 in attorney fees.
Kansas City Wholesale Motors’ Chapter 11 filing listed James’ judgment as a $185,000 claim. It also listed a $168,000 loan from Central Bank of Kansas City and a $25,000 dealer’s bond.
Slough said he will try to get the $25,000 bond applied to his client’s judgment and then pursue the rest of the claim in the bankruptcy.
“They always told us pretty clearly they weren’t going to pay us,” he said of the dealership. “We’re doing it the hard way.”
As for its finances, “it was represented to us that there wasn’t much there,” Slough said.
Rizzo and his lawyer, Michael Gunter, could not be reached for comment.
Rizzo served on the Jackson County Legislature from 1983-1984 and 2003-2010. The Democrat served in the Missouri House from 1985 through 2002.

I'm not shy to put my name to a candidate; I defended Todd Akin. I'm also one of the few who comments on TKC that puts his name to EVERY thought I share. I could probably name a dozen people who live in Northeast that I would rather have representing me in Jefferson City than John Rizzo, but one of them is not Will Royster.

Now you can rationalize it, like Tony, or you can say it was a long time ago and we should move on. But you sure as shit can't argue the basic fact that Rizzo stole the election through fraud. His uncle's conviction closes the door on that argument.

Mr. Tony,
I am not sure about all of the back chat leading up to the plea agreement. What I do know is this: Royster is a jerk.
I do swear, that man is very mean and narrow minded.
I have followed JJ Rizzo's time down in Jefferson City. He has accomplished as much as he can with the GOP controlled government currently (and sadly) in place.
Rizzo has also been able to keep his dad, Henry Rizzo, out of his hair. I am sure that came as a big old surprise to the elder, useless Rizzo.
Voter fraud is a serious thing. Funny, few of us actually bother to get off our rears and go to the polls. As a whole, we don't really value our vote until someone finagles a way to vote where they oughtn't.
As for JJ Rizzo's colleagues giving him the evil eye? oh, bull crap! Talk about fiction. That poser sure is trying to lay it on thick. He is better off pulling his pud. ... well, he is!
Miss Sweetie Pie - you sound like a real simple-minded Northeast street drunk. The kind of person who would believe John Rizzo so long as he promised you a free blanket to soften you night's sleep on a park bench.
ReplyDeleteRizzo is a con, and a figurehead for everything that is shitty in that part of town. He represents his handlers' interests at the expense of the legitimate voters who elected his opponent.
Bryan, I doubt Will Royster would represent YOU anywhere, or any time, for any thing. I respect you for signing your name, but I disrespect you for being simple. The fact that you like Akin and Rizzo says a lot about you, but you disliking Royster seems like a positive bump for him.
ReplyDeleteThe uncle plea bargained for his wife to keep her out of jail, too. And the cousin, too? Three relatives living next door, but not really. I was skeptical of the certainty that was claimed by Royster when he named names three years ago. Now it's obvious he was telling the truth. He said there are many more. I now believe him. Rizzo lost by many votes, but stole enough to get by with one. Asshole!
ReplyDeleteAnyone heard of moot? Anyone, Bueller? Can't do a fucking thing about it, except don't vote for Rizzo if he runs again.
ReplyDeleteI would be upset about this if we had a better candidate than Will Royster. I am unwilling to vote for that man ever. He is not fit for office. If you want me to start caring about this issue. Come up with a better candidate.
ReplyDeleteWtf is this shit? Did that many people even vote in this election? Insanity.
ReplyDeleteWait, so Tony this guy John Moretina is not only John Joseph Rizzo's uncle but he, his wife and daughter voted in the district using the house address RIGHT NEXT DOOR to Representative John Joseph Rizzo?
ReplyDeleteAnd you are saying that there is no connection?
Not even you believe that. This blog supports voter fraud.
This blog supports titays!!! And not just Tony's.
ReplyDeleteI love tiiiiiiiiiitssssssss!
Bwahahahahahahahaaahahaha!
Lots of comments about how nothing can be done about Rizzo being in office - and very defensive, fearful comments toward Royster. Royster must be right, and everybody in Rizzo's camp must know this.
ReplyDeletePeople in Jeff City have reviewed Royster's evidence, which included the identification of Rizzo's uncle, aunt, and cousin. Royster specifically cited DOZENS of names. Rizzo lost this election not by one vote, but by many.
ReplyDeleteTKC, For a story that you said should go away, you sure are expending lots of your energy and time to wipe your boy's dirty ass of the shit he made three years ago! You look like a Fool's Fool.

ReplyDeleteHenry Rizzo's predatory loan company, TMJJ Inc, files bankruptcy because some guy successfully sues him for over $100,000 after Rizzo refuses to give the victim back his $500.
Up until 2010, who claimed to head up marketing for TMJJ? You guessed it ! John Joseph Rizzo.
Who knew there were this many politically involved Northeast voters? It's a wonder that part of town isn't nicer.
ReplyDelete7:31; That is my position as well. I liked Royster every time I met him, but so many people in the neighborhood had bad things to say about him personally. The way he handled the election results convinced me to not vote for him in future elections.
ReplyDelete12:27; Nailed it. It's a rental property, and if any of John's family had been occupying it, even briefly, he would have known. I looked into this in 2010, and it seemed pretty obvious that the Moretina's primary residence was in Gladstone. I also didn't think it was a HUGE deal if Moretina actually paid rent at that property and legally registered to vote there, even though it was dishonest.
El Bryan, the problem with that thought back then is that someone already lived at that address for years so ow could they have paid rent?
ReplyDeleteYou should reconsider all things told to you by Rizzo when you looked into this .
Good point. Like I said, I was never convinced that the Moretina's lived in Columbus Park, but again, I figured they wouldn't be allowed to register to vote if they couldn't provide proof of residency within the district (like a statement from their landlord and/or a utility bill)
ReplyDeleteMaybe it's easier to register to vote outside of your district than I had thought. At the time, I figured if the judge wasn't going to allow it in court, it was because there was no CLEAR violation.
It sounds like that turned out NOT to be the case. If Royster had OFFICIALLY won, I would have had the same reaction, which was, "Finally, it's over," it's an unfortunate circumstance, once which will forever haunt Will, Chris, Adam, et al.
Read the May 22 edition of Retorts Illustrated in Kansas City's Northeast News for my take on it, and be prepared for an even more bitterly contested campaign in 2014.
El Bryan you are mad that taxpayers are stuck with a bill on the toy train after a sham election but not mad that your neighbors and over 600 others had their vote stolen by a few dozen fraudulent votes?
