Missouri reaffirmed its solidly "red state" credentials in 2012 with another overwhelming sweep of the State House And Senate but right now there's really not much to show for it.
To wit . . .
KICK-ASS JEFF CITY INSIDERS NOTE THAT MISSOURI'S GOP "NO VETO" MAJORITY MIGHT END THE SESSION WITH NOTHING TO SHOW FOR THEIR POLITICAL DOMINANCE!!!
"At the start of the session there was a feeling that we were going to see all kinds of far right initiatives with the votes to back it up. But the fact is that Republican are divided about their legislative agenda and they don't have any leadership that can unite them in any single direction."
Just a few months ago, crazy stuff like guns for teachers and massive cuts for the disabled were thought to be slam dunks. The reality is that not even teacher evaluations and tenure reform have been able to make it through the House. And the "NO VETO Majority" makes it impossible to blame Missouri Democrats for this fact of life.
Insiders tell us, behind the scenes the tone in Jeff City is far more moderate than anyone might have expected.
"With items like the austerity measures from Will Kraus - There's just no way that Republicans can go back to their home districts with nothing but cuts and huge reductions in services that are already struggling to stay afloat. What we're seeing is a great deal of diversity even within the Missouri's Republican Party . . ."
The insider continued and offered this money quote . . .
"The result of the GOP division in Missouri is that they're probably going to come away from this session without any banner legislation."
And so, just to sum things up clearly so that Steve Kraske can write about this 3 weeks from now . . . Pundits proudly proclaim Missouri's "red state" title but without anything significant accomplished at the legislative level in the General Assembly, that really doesn't mean much.

i think the hardcore republicans will say that at least they kept the democrats from doing anything dumb and that's half the battle.
ReplyDeleteMissouri is actually fairly well run on the state level. Moderate Democrats like Gov. Nixon and his moderate GOP opposition in the legislature mean that nothing too outrageous got passed.
ReplyDeleteCompare this with Kansas, who used to be moderate and now seems increasingly extreme. The days of Sen. Dole are long gone.

The extremist have the rest of the GOP by the, excuse me, balls. The extreme members are mad. But they just don't know whom they must direct their flaccid anger. The Speaker in Jeff City is hog tied.
Thankfully these angry sons of bitches will shout themselves out and smarter people (from all parties) will step forward.
