CRAIG GLAZER CONSIDERS GOVERNMENT CONTROL BY WAY OF FEAR!!!

TKC NOTE: Right now we have a really fascinating post from our pal Craig Glazer regarding his thoughts on how the government achieves control over its populace.

Furthermore . . .

TKC READERS: CHECK THE NEW CRAIG GLAZER TWITTER ACCOUNT!!! IT SHOULD BE FUN!!!

Now, let's consider this thoughtful essay from one of Kansas City's top media personalities . . .

Fear Factor
‘Head like a hole.
Black as your soul.
I'd rather die than give you control…’ – ‘Head Like A Hole’ by Tool

I was fortunate enough the other night to click onto the Dick Cavett interviews with the greatest American actress of all time, Katherine Hepburn. I believe I saw it on AMC in a two part special. Hepburn did almost no interviews; she won four Academy Awards for Best Actress, which has never been equaled. What really caught my attention during the interview was her telling Dick to ‘shut the hell up and let me talk’ and boy, did she. The most interesting thing she said was in response to one of the few questions she allowed Dick to ask which was ‘What drove you to success?’. She responded with a one word answer ‘Fear’. She went on to explain that even in America our government and even our family structure is based on control and placing each of us under a great sense of fear. That mental monster will be there in some way your entire life.

It struck me how right on the money Katherine Hepburn was; remember this interview was a couple of decades ago. As children, we pound it into you ‘Clean your room or you’ll be punished’. Whether the punishment is a whipping, or loss of allowance, or being kept from going out to play, it is the fear of punishment that motivates you, as a child, to follow the rules. Even early on in school it’s ‘You didn’t complete your homework, sit in the corner’ or ‘you spoke out of turn, go to the blackboard and write one hundred times,” I will not speak without raising my hand”’. For the most minor offenses, the punishment is often grave; chewing gum in class equals no recess for a week,’ if you are late for school then we’ll call your parents and have you punished or my favorite’, ‘You were talking in class again, take your desk out to the hall facing the wall and sit out there the rest of the day, then go see the Principal’.

As you get a little older it’s you’re grounded, or there’s no allowance for you this week or we’re taking the television out of your room or you can’t go out with your friends this weekend.

We think it’s going to get better when we become adults, but the truth is it’s a hundred times worse. You almost have to plan your day, week and life around not being punished for something. Some examples include traffic tickets (and remember they now have cameras and DUI Check Points); remember this isn’t to protect American Citizens, but to punish and control them; make a mistake on your taxes, smoke dope, break one of thousands of nuisance laws and you can go to jail. As you know, America has more people in prison than any other nation on the planet. I would guess nearly fifty percent of them probably don’t need to be there. Why? Because the rule they broke was probably not a rule ten or twenty years ago but it is now and we have to set examples.

My new favorite is credit scores. A few years ago you just had to pay your bills on time and you were good to go. Today, that’s just not good enough. , You have too much credit, therefor you are a bad credit risk.’ ‘ Your income, in our opinion, isn’t large enough to cover your debt, even though you pay on time; therefor you are a bad risk’. The best new punishment of all regarding credit: ‘Oh you were three days late on your credit card payment to Visa, we’ve just moved your percentage from 9 percent to twenty nine percent. We don’t care why you were late, just pay the new balance or we will screw your credit up’. Indeed, they will. You mean you didn’t read the fine print? If you had only called in a week ago, now it’s too late. WHY??? They have rules. As time moves forward we add hundreds of new rules to go with the thousands of old rules meaning you just can’t win. The deck is stacked against you from day one.

Cavett (remember Dick Cavett, it’s a story about Cavett) asked Hepburn, ‘How can you win the game of Life?’ She said: ‘By being positive about your abilities, remaining confident supported by the love and compassion of your immediate family and your parents.’ For the small percentage of Americans who can get through the maze of punitive laws and rules, you will almost always find they grew up in a household with great parenting. Unfortunately for me and my brothers, that wasn’t the case. My mother was a great woman who was dragged down by circumstance and a bad marriage and like a lot of fathers, my dad wasn’t very happy with himself so he wasn’t very happy with his children. This background is probably a lot closer to the norm than we would like to admit. The three of us, then, grew up wild and angry turning down many more dark roads than were necessary. Too many rules, far too much punishment and not enough reward when we did the right things. No excuses, millions of young Americans go through this on a daily basis. Conversely, my brother Jeff had two sons named Jake and Alex and both doing well in high school today. While Jeff’s marriage didn’t survive, he and his wife devoted themselves to their children on a daily and weekly basis. Though no one is perfect, these two young men got tremendous support, love and direction from their mother and their father. Not to follow in their footsteps, but rather to always try and do the right thing. In what is far from normal today for so many young people, my nephews had one or both parents at every ball game, school ceremony, homework session and the like. They were shown both great love and great respect. The result; neither boy has ever been called to the principal’s office, been caught drinking or using illegal drugs, they don’t smoke and rarely use foul language. They are both 4.3 Honor Students and have been their entire junior high and high school career. They are both top notch athletes. Jake is a senior at SM East and just yesterday accepted a major scholarship to Creighton University based on his grades, his leadership skills and being a top notch area tennis player. We are so proud of him and his little brother.

This is an example of how proper support, love and direction can even overcome much of the controlling fear placed upon us. I trust both young men will graduate from a great college; something my brothers and I were unable to achieve. More important, this is just one example of dealing with life’s greatest challenge: overcoming fear.

For this nation to move forward the way we’d all like for it to, our government needs to reevaluate much of the mean-spirited laws and rules we have set up that put tremendous stress on everyone. We are the richest, most-powerful country in the history of mankind. Our government needs to start giving back to the people and not just taking. Hundreds of our laws are now antiquated and need to be readdressed. Example, a nineteen year old college student living in Oklahoma gets busted for selling an ounce of marijuana ten years ago to make extra money to pay for his schooling. He or she’s now a convicted felon and is limited to getting a job in the number one area of employment for young people, the restaurant and bar industry. He or she is not allowed to make or sell a drink or work in a place that does unless it is a menial position like line cook or bus person. Remember, two out of every three Americans will work in the restaurant and service industry at some point in their lives. Because of their felony conviction, there are hundreds of other great job opportunities which they will be denied. For this and many similarly punitive laws and rules, there needs to be a timeline and review so these people can progress and move on with their lives.

It used to be you could not be a law enforcement officer of any kind if you admitted to using illegal drugs of any kind. They lifted that rule about ten years ago, hence the irony. I guess what’s good for the goose isn’t good for the gander. I think America can dial down the volume of fear just a little bit. Maybe we ought to invent one more agency that does nice things for the citizens of this country and doesn’t try to find ways to arrest everyone. Get off the fear factor.

  16. Nice article glazer.
But if you live in fear you're
    not living.
These old guys that try to hurt
    you are living in fear.
They fear that time passed them
by. And that fear comes out in
    anger.
They fear that this is the best
their life gets. And they attack
    others because their lives are
    lacking.
Fear is a great motivator but
don't let it continue to control
    you.
For me...fear of failure is a
    motivator. I refuse to fail.
While other guys i know have failed
and never got back up...and just
let failure control their lives and
they say "no big deal"...i say
no way will i fail. Others never get back on their feet again. So they find
a target and because of their
failings use that target to make
    themselves feel good. Until they
step over the line. Then its trouble.

I agree with some of this article
    but don't let this emotion
control you...if it does it stifles the great things you can
    do...
    take care...

  42. As for Lewis Black and Tracy coming, both good guys. As comedy fans know BOTH did their first KC work at Stanfords, Lewis did Westport ten times as a headliner, OP twice and Legends once...Tracy did Westport four times...so we introduced them both to this market...YOU MIGHT CHECK HATER, LEWIS BLACK IS QUOTED ON THE BACK OF MY BOOK 'KING OF STING' END OF YOUR STUPID COMMENT...when you try and put someone down, do a bit of research moron...STANFORDS INTRODUCED 90% of the meaningful comedy talent we see today in this or city to this city..a fact...thank you..

The other hate comments are too stupid to respond too, I post only as CG my name...unlike some of you shmos I'm kinda busy so I jump in and out of readng the comments...

PS we are bringing in the NEW TOP TALENT like TJ Miller, Rory Scovel,Bryan Callen, Josh Wolf,Nikki Glaser, and many more as they move on tv/film stardom like TJ of course they go to the Midland at some point ala Jim Jefferies, thats the game, more money, more fame..happens...but we let you see them as they climb...soome like TJ come back as did Lewis after he made it huge and Larry the Cable Guy who did our clubs at least 15 times...that's who we are...plus the big name who are still out there from time to time for us that I am friends with like Carlos Mencia, Dave Coulier, Tommy Chong..so on...thanks for asking.

  43. the haters don't understand business.
thats why they're where they are
    in life.
Glazer brings in good talent and
sells lots of tickets and makes
    money.
    the haters don't understand his
    business.
He made it real clear in his
    12;37 comment...what more is there
    to say.
Why must you continue to attack him when he fully explained his
    business plan toyou in detail
and how he brings in his talent.
    Can't you understand?
Can't you figure out his business
    strategy.
Of course he probably could not
    afford lewis black...glazers place
    can't hold enough people for
glazer to make money paying black
    his talent fees.
We all understand that all of the
haters here are not good busines
    people.
    They've failed. They're not making
    things happen.
They're just hobos on the internet.
    If you can't understand what
    glazer wrote you are probably
    not in business.
    Its business 101...simple strategy..
    and it works obviously.
So when it comes to successful
    businesses and successful business
    operations leave the explaining
to those who know whatthey're talkingabout.
It's obvious that many of the people on here who attack glazer
    are not business savvy people
    with successful track records in
    running a business.
So stick to your funny worded
attacks and leave the business and the money making to people who
know how to do it...who've done
it a long time...who know the
    path to success.
Your jokes are no longer funny
and you are only showing how
    street dumb you are.
If you need some advice on how
    to run a successful business...
you can contact me or cg...you
know how to get a hold of us both.
We'll be happy to give you advice and tutoring on how to be successful in today's demanding
    economy.
    thanks..
