Like it or not, right now these solutions have yet to take hold.
However . . . I'll I'm hearing are really silly suggestions to stop Plaza flash mobs, like building walls and public flogging. That's not going to happen and it's just lazy thinking.
Are there any better solutions out there to address the situation confronting the Plaza in a realistic manner?!?! Just wondering.
Yes, people will crack on your suggestion but I'll look for the best ones and post on that chances that some of our civic leaders might think outside the box and do something besides throw money at the problem.

The fear of the police and city officials have is being called racist. So, it will NEVER HAPPEN.
What will happen is the destruction of the Plza, the tax base, the business' , the city' s rep which WILL result in white flight and a Detroit doppelganger ever increasing urban area, replete with murders, rapes and violence.
Now lets talk about something that might actually happen.
I have heard that some adult (as in over 18 years old) individuals were arrested with the youth the other night. This is very disturbing because no one over 18 should be hanging out (and probably encouraging poor behavior) with little kids. It seems to be a very close ick factor when over 21 people run around and hang out with 14 and 15 year old boys and girls. It seems like a predatory thing and thats just gross. Most youth wouldn't want to hang with an older adult, but in this situation it appears to be happening. Kind of looks like a feeding to the wolves/to catch a predator type of thing. We should make sure that the older adults with a penchant for the young ones get arrested for contributing to the deliquency of a minor. Gotta keep the pervs away from the kiddos (even if they do come from the same community). As far as the fight club hypothesis, thats not (in my opinion) what is happening here. Having lived in KC for a long time, this has happened in other neighborhoods(i.e. westport) before. I would suggest 3 things 1)Get the adult kids away from the little ones by charging them with contributing to the deliquency of a minor. 2)Use all those security cameras that they have all over the plaza to catch cars and parents in the act of dropping their kids off. Charge the parents with neglect. Put those kids in the system. Separate these marauding youth from whence they came. 3) Make the plaza as unattractive a place to be hanging out as possible. That would mean playing symphony music, blocking off the street into a ped zone, and making the street lights REALLY bright. The cop presence is all fine and good, but there needs to be physical changes if loitering is going to continue.
ReplyDeleteOnce word gets out that you'll loose your kids if you drop them off unsupervised..that will change things. Get them oldies away from the little ones because no good can come from that. I hear the kids are really into mozart and harsh lighting.
Same problem I had growing up many moons ago. You're can't go here, you can't go there, so the places you think you CAN go get to be pretty few, and pretty soon you got hundreds of kids going there.
ReplyDeleteOne first step would be to stop calling these kids "mobs" and find out what they are after. Why are they hanging out at the Plaza?
And I think you'll find out that most of them want a place to hang out, to be seen, to have some fun with friends, maybe even meet somebody of the opposite sex.
I wouldn't presume to know what the answer is, but I do know that treating kids like they were "mobs" ain't it.

Black kids are flocking to the Plaza because there's nothing for them east of the Plaza ... so build something east of the Plaza. Declare eminent domain on the Payday Loans building at Cleaver and Troost. Give the land to Dickinson or AMC on the requirement that they open a movie theater and keep it open for a minimum of a decade. Take the land on the catty-corner side and build some kind of fun center ... batting cages, basketball courts, arcade games. Give it to a developer and again mandate that the center be maintained and operated for at least a decade.

Maybe take the block with the Payday Loans building and build a community center on that land -- sort of the same idea (indoor/outdoor basketball courts, arcade games, a weight room, etc.). Make it open 24 hours. On the opposite side of the street, build another police station (or at least a satellite station). Young black children and teenagers will have a place to go (which keeps the mostly white residents and business owners of the Plaza happy), and the increased police presence could act as a deterrent and reduce crime in the area.

We did not have guns! we did not get out, we just talked in the cars. When my kids were growing up, I would not allow them to go hang out in malls! For what purpose? They have never been taught right from wrong from their parent...note there was no s on that. If you want to stop the shit going on on the plaza it's simple. Make the people who are supposed to be responsible for the children, be responsible fore the children. (17 and under) Break Curfew = Parents who are supposed to be responsible go to jail...not pay a fine, not get community service, GO TO JAIL. Maybe then these parents will give a shit about where their kids are and who they are with. They created the monsters and they are responsible for them until they are at least 17 so hold them accountable. Now when saying this I don't give a shit what color, race, creed, or national origin they are...if your responsible for the kids then guess what know where they are and what they are doing or you could go to jail. Write that in your city ordinances.

ReplyDeleteNot my idea -- it is a friend's; Encourage everyone in the city to take their dogs for walks on the plaza on warm weather weekends. It doesn't matter what kind of dog but it's good if they are barkers & jumpers. My friend has witnessed first hand how scared of dogs most of these kids are. Last summer, they ran from the area where a couple was walking with their dog (med size) on a leash. More people with baggies in hand to clean up after their dogs will keep the kids away.
