Moving to FM won't make their station any more relevant than it is on the AM side.

Exactly, and I am not sure that Landsberg's point is supported by the evidence he cites.

All so-called "free radio" is hurting big time, and that includes FM.

The survey he cites says that 99 percent of people said that FM radio was very or somewhat important when considering the purchase of a new car.

Now what new cars are sold today that are NOT equipped with FM as a standard option.

More important to me than even satellite would be a way to plug my iPod, which holds my entire CD collection, into the auto's sound system. It is also common today, and in fact, I wouldn't buy a car without that capability.

AM radio should be handed to the religious nuts, political nuts, 24 hour news and weather, road advisories, non-profit and public radio licenses and clean up the FM band by tossing all but professional commercial FM broadcast stations.
