THE TKC SUNDAY SPECIAL!!! FORMER KANSAS CITY PITCH HONCHO TONY ORTEGA STAYS WINNING WITH BLOG AND HIGHLY ANTICIPATED BOOK ON SCIENTOLOGY!!!

Kansas City newises have endured a great many changes in journalism over recent years and the most ambitious reporters have taken to the Internets to practice their craft.

Unfortunately, there's no formula for success in the online world and not every Kansas City newsie has achieved the same level of success. Writers like Jason Whitlock have continued their national dominance with writing about sports while so many others have simply done nothing more than contribute to the quotient of digital noise.

Now . . . Here's a story of journalist who made a name for himself in Kansas City and continues his upward career trajectory.

In the early 2000's (2003-2005) Tony Ortega was the Managing Editor @ The Pitch and was known for his cutting edge investigative stories along with a wicked sense of humor. Mr. Ortega not only skewered local politicos in his "Kansas City Strip" column but he also fostered as sense of cooperation betwixt newspapers and bloggers that has been unmatched among mainstream media since his departure.

After his stint in Kansas City, Mr. Ortega continued his career with a national alt. media corp. that eventually led to New York City.

As the Village Voice Editor-in-Chief Mr. Ortega stood at the absolute pinnacle of alternative and independent journalism.

From that point the implosion of the dead tree media biz model along with newsie politics seemingly led to the next phase of Mr. Ortega's career.

But here's the good part . . .

FORMER KANSAS CITY PITCH EDITOR TONY ORTEGA STAYS WINNING WITH A KICK-ASS BLOG AND UPCOMING BOOK ON SCIENTOLOGY!!!

Even better . . .

JOURNALIST TONY ORTEGA ANSWERED A COUPLE OF EXCLUSIVE AND BREAKING NEWS QUESTIONS ABOUT HIS BOOK WHICH HAS ALREADY GARNERED A HUGE FOLLOWING!!!

Really, we were just happy to get back in touch with Mr. Ortega given that he helped pioneer the Kansas City blog scene.

To start, he answered an opening question about the progress of his project:

"The book is going really well, and I'm also having a great time with the blog," Tony Ortega wrote via a social media message to TKC.

The blog:

"The Underground Bunker" @ TonyOrtega.org

Observation from my mom's basement . . . It's funny that so many writers on the Internets seem to practice their craft from underground.

A bit of description . . .

"Former Village Voice editor Tony Ortega has written about Scientology since 1995. He’s currently working on a book about the church, and while he toils away on it he continues to monitor breaking developments around the world from an undisclosed location in an underground bunker he shares with four cats and one of them wrinkly Shar Pei dogs."

We've noticed that Mr. Ortega has a sizable following and a lively comment section for his work on the religious hot topic of Scientology.

Here's what Mr. Ortega has to say about his online audience . . .

"I am very fortunate that the site has so many readers who contribute to a really intelligent discussion."

On Sunday we always try to cover at least some aspect of a faith-based topic here on TKC and what we've learned so far is that Tony Ortega's writing and investigative skill have undergone a career resurrection on the Internets following his departure from Dead Tree Media. Also, we believe that Mr. Ortega's work myth-busting The Church Of Scientology will soon lead to even greater journalism glory.

Can you really turn a not-so-great blog into a sensation simply by blog climbing onto sites who have already established legitimacy? And finally, what happens if you make it and find you no longer want to keep up the charade with the blogger you used to get where you are?
