KCPS REPURPOSING FAIL: BLIGHTING SCHOOL DEMOLITION BEGINS!!!
Northeast News offers a VERY IMPORTANT REALITY CHECK regarding the progress of the plan to "repurpose" Kansas City Public Schools that have been shut down: KCPS to demolish Thacher Elementary School this summer
And so . . .
DEMOLITION OF NOW EMPTY KANSAS CITY PUBLIC SCHOOLS MARKS YET ANOTHER PROMISE BROKEN BY THE KCPS!!! THIS IS ANOTHER EXAMPLE THAT THE GRAND PLANS OF THE SCHOOL BOARD AND ADMINISTRATION HAVE FAILED TO LIVE UP TO EXPECTATIONS!!!
Long story short . . . The district is dying and this is just another sign of this fact . . .

Welcome to DETROIT.
KCPS is totally responsible for this debacle. They failed to secure the building after it closed even leaving the doors unlocked. When the firefighters arrived to attack the blaze in the north wing ALL the doors were open. Thus it's burned and vandalized. These folks were entrusted with the property of the taxpayers and botched the job completely. They wanted the building torn down and due to their own incompetence are now getting their wish. I used to be opposed to a State takeover,.... now I can't wait. Thacher.... 116 years old but the current generation can't take care of her. Shame.
Kansas City Public Schools or KCPS is an unaccredited school district headquartered at 1211 McGee Street in Downtown Kansas City, Missouri. This entire school district officially lost accreditation on January 1st, 2012.
Anything else we need to know?
When does the House vote on SB7?
I've been to two meetings regarding the state of this building, and while it's sad to see it go, there are no interested buyers, and the safety of the children attending Northeast Middle (adjacent to Thacher and scheduled to be reopened in fall 2013) is the district's priority.
The district DID drop the ball on this one by not properly securing the building, but the property sits on Independence Avenue, so it's a practically impossible task, not to mention that it's on prime commercial space. The district has the ability to make some money off of the land, and they also seem to be very cooperative in preserving architectural gems... possibly even donating specific salvage items to organizations or individuals in the neighborhood.
Great job, Airick!
real "leader" ... kind of like the "lead lemming"
El Bryan is a perfect example of everything wrong with preservation in America today. http://hyperblogal.blogspot.com/2013/03/thacher-school-1897-more-needless-demo.html Young, uninformed and believes everything he is told.

Is EVERYTHING Airick's fault? Sheesh.
El Bryan is a dumbass who doesn't know what the hell he's talking about. I live by that school. I WENT TO THAT SCHOOL. They need to fix it back up. Even in the condition it's in, it is still built better than the new cardboard schools they are putting together today. El Bryan, do you really think you know everything? God ur annoying.
Airick is too busy to be bothered with things like this. Busy with trying to get young law students to take care of him. He wants a breadwinner he can breed with.
The people who want to save these old buildings need to get their heads out of their asses. These relics that the KCPS still uses are just money pits. Knock them all down and move on. The district needs to focus on teaching and learning, not real estate.
As far as broken promises go, that is a load of crap. If there are no buyers, no students to occupy the building, that is just the way it is. Keeping their promise and diverting the schools focus which is blurry at best, is simply asinine.
This is just another case where the community wants something from the district that has nothing to do with the kids.
David, it's funny that we're neighbors and even served as officers together for the Neighborhood Association, but you apparently don't seem to know me from Adam.
When I share my opinions, I open myself up to criticism. I'm a big boy and I can take it, but "uninformed," and "believes everything he is told," is actually the EXACT OPPOSITE of what I am.
And as I stated before, I attended two repurposing meetings for this property a year ago, and KCPS was at our most recent IMNA meeting, but I never saw you at any of those meetings.
I'm sorry for all of the people who attended the school, but saying "They need to fix it back up," isn't a plan for actually doing that. Anyone who is concerned about preserving it needs to do more than take pictures of it and make snarky comments on the internets.
