2014 Kansas Secretary of State Race Begins
Mission Hills businessman enters the race
Lenexa KS, February 11, 2013 — On Saturday at the Johnson County Democrats monthly breakfast, it was announced that Mission Hills Businessman, Randy Rolston, is running for the office of Kansas Secretary of State. He will be seeking the Democratic nomination to unseat the controversial Republican incumbent, Kris Kobach.
Mr. Rolston aspires to hold the distinction of being only the second Democrat ever elected to this position since Kansas entered the union in 1861. He is a graduate of The University of Kansas and President / Co-founder of Victorian Trading Company, a successful mail order company based in Lenexa .
Over the last two years, Mr. Kobach has been criticized for devoting an excessive amount of time on his personal agenda, frequently sending him out-of-state. According to Rolston, “ Kansas deserves a full-time Secretary of State, and I propose to increase voter participation by making both the registration and voting process more convenient for all Kansans.” With only 67% of registered Kansans voting in November 2012, figures are down 5.5% from the general election of 2008. Rolston intends to increase youth participation by allowing 16 and 17 year-olds the opportunity to pre-register to vote at Kansas DMV's. This could be conveniently conducted at the time they are obtaining their driver's licenses.
The day following Rolston’s candidacy filing in Topeka , Kobach informally announced that he will seek re-election to the office he won in 2010. Rolston has jump started his own campaign with a loan of $200,000, noting that he believes that he will need to raise one million dollars in donations to defeat Kobach. With Kobach and Rolston being the first two statewide candidates who have declared their candidacies, the Kansas 2014 election cycle begins.
