TKC BREAKING AND EXCLUSIVE NEWS!!! KANSAS CITY STAR MASS SUBSCRIPTION CANCELLATION SAGA DAY TWO!!!

Yesterday this blog broke news of a subscriber revolt at The Star over a controversial political comic referencing a SEAL who was recently killed in a tragic episode of gun violence.

And now . . .

WE HAVE MORE DETAILS ON SUBSCRIBER PUSHBACK AND A DESPERATE ATTEMPT TO KEEP PAYING CUSTOMERS FROM LEAVING THE KANSAS CITY STAR!!!

Thankfully . . .

A COUPLE OF YOU HAVE SENT WORD TO TKC ABOUT KANSAS CITY STAR SUBSCRIPTION REPS CALLING TO TRY AND SMOOTH THINGS OVER!!! LIKE IT OR NOT, THE RESPONSE HAS BEEN BRUTAL!!!

Check a few quotes from former Star subscribers who endured this desperate attempt by corporate media to make things right . . .

"The Star called me this morning about my cancelled subscription. They said I have been a long time subscriber and they wanted to talk to me about my cancellation. They acted like we were going to chat like old buddies. When I told them why I canceled, the defeat in their voice was instantly obvious. I said: 'I canceled because of Lee Judge's Feb 9th cartoon." They immediately threw in the towel."

Another former subscriber said:

"Talking with a Star employee, He said that Judge was supposed to stir my emotions. And I said then he succeeded wildly. I'm stirred. And I'm cancelling."

More . . .

"The Star thinks they are the only game in town and therefore untouchable. But their paper is so bad, it's truly not worth it. Judge was just the last straw. I mean, what will I miss? Lynn's deep investigative stories? Kraske's insight? Yael's thoughtfulness? Lewis Diuguid's race-neutral columns? The only thing I'll really miss is Dilbert."

Ouch.

Sadly, we don't envy the worker bees who will be forced to deal with so many angry former subscribers who are aren't going to forgive and forget a serious editorial mistake which reveals that it's not just digital alternatives that are contributing to the demise of Dead Tree Media in this town.

DEVELOPING . . .

  5. 3:18, I take it you're referring to the people who still subscribe to the paper, and not the ones who took a stand and backed it up.

    ReplyDelete
  6. I'd cancel my subscription if I had one but not because of the comic strip which was actually pretty entertaining. I'd cancel because the content is horrible, one-sided and the topic research is MIA. Thank God I can still get the KC Business Journal.

  7. 3:34, couldn't agree with you more.

    ReplyDelete
  8. You're a bunch of racists if you cancel the paper.

  9. Our opinion is that our opinion is all that matters.

    Don't you people GET IT?!

    ReplyDelete
  10. I dropped the Star years ago because of Lee Judge's stupidity.

    ReplyDelete
  11. If you keep your subscription current, I'll write you a special column about how my ladytime periodical visitor thing (wink, wink) woke my inner rainbow unicorn social justice textual healing brainy parts.

    kthxbi

PS - I'll let my little mustache grow back in too!

  12. The Kansas City Star should be on a roll and available in every shithouse in the four state region. Perhaps it already is?

  13. We fully support a Constitutional amendment to declare Obama as President-For-Life, outlaw any opposition party, take away all the scary gun thingies from you, and have the USSA (United Socialist States of America) deduct $150 per week from your PermaStimulus® and Obamalife® EBT for your subscription dues, as well as to cover the subscription dues for all undocumenteds.

  15. What does John Rizzo's protector, Barb Schelly, think?

  16. I am questioning if the cartoon was just the straw that broke the camels back. The fact it is a totally liberal paper. Funny how most papers are failing and most are liberal run. Maybe if both sides of an issue were brought forth people would read. Judge should stick to what he does best and that is coach oldman baseball. Douche

    ReplyDelete
  17. I am cancelling also, I cannot stand to read any views that do not match my own preconceived notions and beliefs. Hell, reading other views might cause me to actually think!

    ReplyDelete
  18. One has to admire their business model: Piss on the sensibilities of 50%+ of their customer base then rant and rave about how wrong those customers are.

    ReplyDelete
  19. So Tony? How many people have actually cancelled their subscriptions because of the Judge story?

That's a bit of information I need before I can say whether a "subscriber revolt" is actually occurring.

Unless, of course, I am supposed to take your word for it. Then again, I've learned to be very skeptical and ask questions about things I read. Especially in blogs.

  20. A woman I really admire inspired me to say that you have to cancel the subscription before you can read what's in the subscription.

  21. What a bunch of spoon-fed-by-Tony crybaby losers.

  22. 4:56 PM - best comment of the day. At least there is one sane soul left in this town!

  23. Nope, just another liberal cry-baby apologist.

I think we should give people with mental illness fire arms.

  25. A totally liberal paper? Do you not read E. Thomas McClanahan? Jonah Goldberg? Charles Krauthamer? Pretty sure I wouldn't call them liberal. Remember, everything Fox News tells you isn't true. The "liberal media" is simply another one of their catch phrases.

    ReplyDelete
  26. The issue isn't whether the paper is liberal or conservative. The argument could easily be made that it leans left, but so does most ok KCMO, so that's not shocking.

4:56, you totally miss the point of why people are canceling their paper, or at least why I did. It wasn't that I don't want to think. It's that Lee Judge didn't.

    ReplyDelete
  27. 7:30, Lee Judge has an awful lot of power of you, doesn't he?

I mean, he gets to decide which newspapers you'll subscribe to.

    ReplyDelete
  28. No, 7:40, he does not. I get to decide if I want to contribute my dollars to his paycheck.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Liberals are constantly (and hypocritically) trying to punish people and organizations when they espouse views that liberals disagree with. Chick-fil-a, for example. It's nice to see that conservatives are responding in kind. This assclown managed to crap on the 2nd Ammendment and dishonor the memory of a decorated veteran in one comic. Fuck Lee Judge and the KC Star.

The KC Star = The KC Purple Starfish

Outputting feces all over Kansas Citians for far too long.

    Boycott them.

    Boycott their advertisers.

Put them out of business and run their editors out of town on a rail.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Land of the Free & Home of the Brave. LOL. WTF is a purple starfish?

    ReplyDelete
  34. 7:44, if indeed you were a subscriber (which I doubt) and cancelled your subscription because of one political cartoon by one particular cartoonist, then yes, Lee Judge has a lot of power over you. And it speaks of your ability to tolerate opinions that don't fit your world view.

But it still begs the question Tony hasn't answered. How many subscriptions were lost because of this one cartoon? Enough to call it a "mass subscriber revolt"?

    ReplyDelete
  35. For many it seems the cartoon was the last of many straws.

The KC Star is a dying paper full of low-or-no-talent liberal hacks and blossoming Alzheimer's victims.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I just want to know...

How does Lewis Dickweed get Do-good out of Duiguid?

    A Judge cartoon:
    "Barack Obama Inspires Hope"
Picture if Republican elephant with caption: " I hope America's Still Racist!"
We cancelled our subscription and haven't bought one since. We had had enough of being insulted every morning.

    ReplyDelete
  38. America is still racist.

    ReplyDelete
  39. What's the point of paying for the paper anyway? The only person I know who needs her paper physically delivered is my 87 year old grandmother, who doesn't have internet access. Why would you pay to read news Facebook probably informed you of 12 hours ago? Also the star shits on their Carriers. Ask one. they have to deliver your paper in the worst weather, and get charged 7 dollars(a paper) if someone makes a complaint (even if its bogus), on top of everything, they make half a much as they used to, despite higher gas prices. I hope the whole damn paper goes out of business.
