Kansas City Hobo Crackdown Part Deux!!!

Once again local po'folk are targeted because of their poverty.

The latest example . . . Critics say charities for hard-core homeless do more harm than good

Remember that the crackdown aimed Kansas City hobos started last month . . . Meanwhile, a great many politicos and voices from City Hall have found a new target with little voting power.

  1. Like O'Byrne's comment about throwing a sandwich is getting redemption on the cheap.

  2. Note to all the so called do-gooders... Charity starts at home. Feed the voluntary homeless in your neighborhood then worry about the ones in the inner city. You and your organizations aren't doing anything to fight homelessness.

  3. There is a need, no doubt, but there appears to be a lack of coordination amongst the agencies providing this outreach. In addition, when the agencies bring the outreach into a neighborhood the result is many times an increase in property crime, public intoxication, trash and loitering. Just organize it and please take it out of the neighborhood to a more lighted and monitered location. It can be a volitale situation

    1. To where?? As long as they're not near YOUR neighborhood right?

  4. Word of the handouts also gets around and our population of "homeless" has exploded over the last couple of years. "Free food" attracts.

  5. Our homeless population has exploded because of KC's central transit location, warmer winter temperatures, and an economy that doesn't yet have the construction or manufacturing jobs that would allow a portion of these guys to get back to work. It's not because we make sure they have the occasional baloney sandwich.

  6. If you encourage homelessness by promoting the homeless lifestyle, which is what most of these charity organizations do, you're not helping.

The hand out becomes the hand holding them down.

  7. Its like feeding the geese at a park. They learn to depend on food thrown at them and forget how to take care of themselves. Simple as that.

  9. Give them the bum's rush out of the loop. Help those who take it. Force the rest out.

  10. Do you really want to see a hobo next time you drive through fast food? It's time to rethink picking up ones self by the boot straps. Hobo's aren't stupid and they know there are virtually no social services for them to be had ..I mean really? It's time to face the fact that nobody really gives a shit about anyone anymore

  11. I work downtown and will be one of the first ones to tell you this: The reason there are so many people who actually live outside is because the services and shelters have rules. It is as simple as that. Many of the shelters do not accept people who are intoxicated or on drugs. They also have policies regarding behavior. I see it every day. The people who are out actually living on the streets are the ones who choose to so they can do whatever they want to with maybe a small consequnce from the police by means of a trip to jail for taking a dump on the front stoop of a business or by stealing liquor from the Cosentinos. They choose to live outside and in these camps. The Star's article failed to mention Hendrick's previous articles on the clearing of homeless camps from about two years ago, one of which had electricity from a stolen generator where they were running lights and a television to their makeshift buildings. The people who refuse to live in the shelters and use the provided services regardless of where the help comes from are the ones living outside on the streets. Being a "hardcore homeless" is a choice.
