It is way past time for the FCC to step in and some things have to be done in order to make TV service more competitive
as well as convenient:

First, the FCC needs to standardize cable equipment so that consumers aren't scmeckled or inconvenienced by proprietary equipment. That is to say make cable boxes as available and as standardized as telephones. No proprietary boxes - No fees for each TV. Company delivers cable to teh outlet and the consumer takes over from there. There are ample smart cards configurations that could authenticate the outlet. You buy your boxes and they work with anyones service - PERIOD.

Second, force ala carte' cable service. Why should consumers be told they get 150 channels and 40 percent of them are religious, shopping, ethnic, sports, kiddie and other similar (and plain crap) channels?

Third, Stop forcing consumers to pay for "Paid Advertising" during uowards of 30 per cent of the TV day.

Fourth, Prohibit cable companies from using their internet service to block or throttle competitive services like voip phones, alternative TV channels, bit torrent, SIP, etc.

Fifth, Stop granting each commercial licensee 4 digital channels per license (some in this town have 8 TV channels) and then letting them waste them. Make then use them or sub-license for community or other programing. It is a shame that the most valid utilization of these extra channels id by public TV outlets.
