COLUMNIST CHRIS MORENO TAKES ON THE KANSAS CITY AREA WALMART FIGHT!!!

Kansas City Insiders have been wondering what Chris Moreno has been up to as of late.

After helping launch a local indoor football team, he has moved on to a corporate gig somewhere in the lush office park world of JoCo and we hear he's doing well.

I wouldn't count on him making a foray back into the world of local politics just yet but he's still saying active in a regular column running in the Lee's Summit Tribune.

Recently, Mr. Moreno penned an insightful missive on the fight against Walmart throughout the Kansas City area.

Walmart and Price Chopper Deals Symbolic of Bigger Problem

Money line regarding the struggle in Lee's Summit: "Residents are not against development. They are against this type of development. If we are going to add more grocery stores why not add upscale, unique stores such as Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods Market, which are proven anchors that attract higher end economic development? We need not look any further than Ward Parkway Mall’s turn around or 119th Street in Overland Park to see their positive impact."

For now, residents in Kansas City's Waldo area seem to have pushed back Walmart but over the long term questions about selectivity and quality for TIF fund giveaways are relevant for local government officials far to eager to throw money at the first corporate biz to ask.

Not as far as anyone in Waldo knows. Most of us are in favor of the Neighborhood Market (i.e., a smmall new grocery store.)
