City Hall isn't a happy place to be according to Kansas City Insiders.
To wit . . .
WHAT WE'VE HEARD FROM MORE THAN A FEW INSIDERS IS THAT CITY HALL MORALE IS AS LOW AS IT HAS EVER BEEN UNDER THE ADMINISTRATION OF KANSAS CITY MAYOR SLY JAMES!!!
Think about it:
City Hall is bracing for upcoming layoffs.
Money goes missing with almost no questions asked.
The unions for a great many City Workers don't really have any pull.
And local politicos are making more demands of City Hall workers while allocating fewer resources.
Combine this typical situation with a divisive civic culture that mostly pits one City Hall worker against another along racial lines and it's simple to see that Mayor Sly hasn't changed much during his tenure.
And so . . .
UNDER MAYOR SLY'S ADMINISTRATION, LOCAL GOVERNMENT WORKING LIFE IS REPORTEDLY NEARLY AS BAD AS RECENT "FUNKY YEARS" AT CITY HALL!!!
That comparison is disheartening but speaks to the level of discontent coming from City Hall workers who thought conditions would improve under Mayor Sly but now seem disappointed by a politico with other priorities.

Not true. Morale is better than during Funk's term. Still, there are some department heads who should be fired. A new city manager might help.

Maybe Sly expects city employees to, like, do their jobs.
Morale is an issue but not because of the mayor. There's incompetent management at the department head level. There's a culture that rewards those who get along by going along with a total disregard for professional judgement. A lot of cronyism and recycling of people who have no business being at the helm of a major American city.
Years ago there used to be quality department heads. The manager was simply a figure head. A ring master whose job was to allow the directors to do their jobs by giving them cover. Cauthen fired some of the incompetent people but the city also lost good people along the way.
Morale is low because the city lacks leadership and there is no sign of improvement in the horizon.

City Hall might be fucked up but this is still a great city. Those of us who live in the city put up with shitty schools and shitty services. But I still love this town and my neighborhood.

...from the top to the bottom, they are generally lazy, incomptetent, related to one or more other employees and have the attitude that someone owes them a living without them working for it.
I propose forming a "Committee on Committees" to acertain what steps are to be taken, if any, to access our situation now that we are over the cliff. Said committee should be sprinkled with great diversity and definitely headed by a minority. Possibly headed by an unemployed pole dancer with stealth pictures circulating which makes for good press on TKC and the rumor mill at City Hall.
Morale at city hall sucks because of Troy Schulte and his "promote his buddy system" Employees that do good are ignored while his buddies get promoted for doing nothing.
As far as pending layoffs, if those 100 plus employees who stole from Blue Cross and Blue Shield are not let go first, there will be some huge legal payouts in court.
If there are to be layoffs, why are they hiring three deputy directors??? Why does Health, Parks, and City Development need a deputy director??
What is the most sad, nothing said on this blog will change a God Damn thing. Our Mayor and Council will march forward with business as usuall.
Remember when Scott Wagner said he was mad at the Public Works Director for taking away lights in his district without public input?? Yet he said he still liked her and would still send a Christmas card. WTF???????

Byron thinks it's a great city but just don't want to live here. No he wants to come along and stick his very unwelcome nose into our business. Maybe we need to all go back east and expose him to all the people back there and as well let SS know how he is really scaming them and his views on what disable means as he so likes to put into words here on this blog. Maybe we can make his life a little bit of hell by sticking our noses into things back there and stiring things up like he does around here.

Nearly every fire department employee is white and IS related to another fire employee.
Get rid of that useless, law breaking, ass-kissing HR director. Then, go after waste--there's a huge amount of money wasted on everything from big tvs to office supplies. The renovation of the mayor's office will cost how much? And the ADA training? Fire those employees who cheated Blue Cross.
They need ADA training--no one knows anything, including the ADA director.
Wasn't DOJ supposed to chnage that culture of hating disabled people?
My wife is a dedicated KCMO employee who truly enjoys her work and takes a sense of satisfaction in getting things done. She is not a leader, by nature, but deserves at least one at the higher levels of City Management. 10 years ago KCMO hired a CM that had, let's see, zero months of professional management experience. After watching that guy play the race card and draw out his tenure beyond his welcome (anyone see where Wayne is working now?.....) the Mayor and Council hired a guy whose credentials indicated one City Manager position of a city of 5,000 (maybe). BUT, he had municipal budget experience.
How is that working? My wife watches this annual execution of staff via RIF, knowing the ones that should be going out the door, ARE NOT. Meanwhile, while the RIFS process out the door, the senior managers proudly boast of their internal relationships, because making nice with directors, deputy directors, assistant city managers, deputy city managers is what keeps you employed.
Over generalizations are NEVER accurate. Some work hard at CH. They deserve better than to be categorized by the visible top management that knows little to nothing about leadership.
Smart people are getting out of that building fast. The spouse's retirement kicks in on August 6, and then we are heading to Oklahoma where cities are actually run correctly.
New Years Resolution: Excercise more and turn it in to Blue Cross Blue Shield for free money....ha ha ha
