MUST READ!!! REPORT ANALYZES KANSAS CITY ENTREPRENEURIAL COMMUNITY!!!

Kansas City business science tops our morning reading. Or at least we're concerned with local biz in as much as we also made a through examination of Melissa Debling's body of work in order to publish this post. Natch.

Check it:

Paper explores assets, obstacles for KC entrepreneurial community

Money quote: "The paper released earlier this month shares Heike Mayer's findings from the most recent round of interviews, shedding light on the Kansas City entrepreneurial community's strengths, shortcomings and potential courses of action."

What we like is that the paper seems to provide a realistic look at the local startup biz community and reveals that Kansas City is disconnected, big biz isn't helping but entrepreneurs in this town remain exceptionally enthusiastic.

The paper . . . "Entrepreneurial Community in Kansas City: From Fragmented to Collaborative?"

Heike Mayer is a professor of economic geography University of Bern in Switzerland, and her work in KC was supported with the backing of the Kansas City, Mo.-based Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation.

Entrepreneurs? Why would I want to do that since I'm making big money now blogging from home. And in just six weeks. Going out to buy a new top of the line Mac with the money I made in just the past hour!

Some good information in the paper, but also a lot of stale sources (e.g. 1986?), including many from ten years ago. Some things may have changed or a greater understanding obtained in the last decade?

Also, the reliance on sources such as unpublished papers or articles that were not peer-reviewed limits the utility of this analysis.

Consultants tend to write papers that leave important unresolved questions so that they can get the next gig answering those questions. This paper does a very good job of doing just that.

Overall, interesting but not really actionable- unless the next round of research is on your nickel.

Big business and organizations are not looking to help entrepreneurs, they want to exploit them.

There is no money in this cow town. Only ignorance, stupidity, racism and complacency. This city is run by old money that just wants somewhere on the planet to have a street or building named after them. Nice parks with beautiful fountains BUT just drive by because there's no parking anywhere near them! Museums? Every historic site is either now a museum or a loft. Hell Terminal C is slated to become a museum!

This city, with their red neck population of uncultured town folk don't know what enterprise is and they don't want to know. They just want to work from nine to five, take their two and a half kids and their dog on vacation once a year and then just die. That's all they want here. That's life in Kansas City.

This town is dying. The people closed their eyes to it years ago. They live in fear and spew hate at anybody who threatens to pull them out of their comfort zone of just existing. Nothing great will ever be done in this city. The great ones leave and then are free to do great things elsewhere.

No, Kansas City and its people will be a distant memory, a dusty passage point for those choosing to live life and contribute to the good of mankind on the planet.
