If you can clean up Times Square you can clean up just about anywhere. It takes a concerted effort and every black person can't scream "racism" at the drop of a hat, which it takes for cops to really clean something up. The people who aren't committing crimes have nothing to worry about. And we need to legalize a few drugs. Way too many non-violent offenders in prison. But prisons are big-time dollars for a few corporations in America who love having people locked up.

"Elsewhere, studies have shown that crime drops when more police officers are hired, so it is not surprising that the expansion of New York’s police force in the 1990s by more than a third was accompanied by a drop in crime." - Kansas City Politicos haven't increased the size of KCPD significantly since the 1970's. In fact, in FY 2009, they cut the budget by $15 million dollars. Now KCPD doesn't even have the same number of officers in cities of a similar size and population.

I guess that depends on how you account for crime in a city.

The level of corruption and crime in the NYPD is HUGE.

First, the high cost if living in New York has contributed significantly to making it a city of rich people who are not involved in crime as much as poor people.

Second, cameras, anti-terror police squads, toll booths on every bridge and tunnel leading in and out of the city monitored by cameras has significantly restircted movement of criminals in and out of the city.

Third, the more visible police are to criminals the less likely they will act on opportunity.

Finnaly,Brandon Woodard was executed by a Mexican Cartel on the sidewalk in broad daylight in New York and the police have yet to solve the crime even though there was video of the killing.

Don't think for a minute you are safe in New York.

We don't need MORE KCPD cops.
What we need is for the KCPD cops we have to get out from behind all those desk jobs and get to work on the street. There are WAY TOO many KCPD cops sitting around Headquarters reading the papers, surfing the net etc. We don't need bigger government we need a government that works.

Apparently No one read the article.... “The precise causes of New York’s crime decline will be debated by social scientists until the Sun hits the Earth,” said Michael Jacobson, a criminologist who ran the city’s Correction and Probation Departments during the 1990s". They don't know why crime reduced so ,no, more cops are not the answer.

Echo that 8:06... We only had 6 wrkn our div today. Yes, I'm putting it out there bc the public needs to know. This is getting stupid and going to get someone hurt. Mark my words we will unfortuantely probably be attending the first officer funeral in over 20 years or better come this year 2013in KC due to assault or gunfire. This is crazy!

10:36 your command staff will be responsible for thedeath of a KCPD officer. KCPD is being mis-managed.
Quit excusing poor management. KCPD is poorly run. You have PLENTY of officers they are just sitting behind desks. They should be out on the street protecting other KCPD officers! There no excuse for this.

this is 1 of the worst run big city police departments in the nation and it doesnt just start with forte and end there. Several deputy chiefs, majors, and captains are completely unqualified for the jobs theyre in and are making the situation worse. Its true about the excessive amount of admin people but the kcpd also has way way too many commanders. If we cut the command staff by a forth we would be about where we need to be. Take that money and hire qualified officers and that'll help tremendously.

Interesting article and even more interesting comments.

It don't matter, Forte will do what he wants. Until we can completely get rid of the gang of 8, nothing will get better. You think it's fucked up now, wait till the city takes it over. Hope you don't need an ambulance because it's going to take 15-20 minutes to get one. What wonderful answers do you think the city council will come up with to fix the KCPD.
