SNAP presses for further action from outspoken KC priests

Statement by Barbara Dorris, SNAP Outreach Director (SNAPdorris@gmail.com)

The New York Times reports that roughly half of the Kansas City diocese's priests have no confidence in Bishop Robert Finn. Sadly those sentiments, unless backed by action, won't change a thing.

Kansas City priests must find courage and take action if ever their diocese is to become safer and healthier. Privately expressing disapproval of a criminal behavior won't get the job done.

A decade ago, some 50+ Boston priests publicly rebuked Cardinal Bernard Law seeking his resignation. They won.

The church is a feudal hierarchy. Bishops hold virtually all of the power. Priests, like lay people, are essentially serfs, so they are understandably reluctant to challenge bishops, even one who is a proven lawbreaker. (Bishops have clearly retaliated against brave whistleblowers, basically shunning them and transferring them to small, remote parishes for decades.)

Still, sometimes conscience and decency demands that we put the safety and well-being of others - especially children – above our own selfish desires. Now is that time in Kansas City.

We call on KC priests to

* band together for support and strength,

* publicly declare their disapproval of Finn's recklessness, callousness and deceit,

* stand up in their parishes this Sunday, begging every single person who saw, suspected or suffered clergy sex crimes and cover ups to contact police,

* share what they know and suspect about crimes and cover ups with law enforcement, and

* do everything they can to save their diocese, and its children, not save their own clerical careers.

(SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, is the world’s oldest and largest support group for clergy abuse victims. We’ve been around for 23 years and have more than 10,000 members. Despite the word “priest” in our title, we have members who were molested by religious figures of all denominations, including nuns, rabbis, bishops, and Protestant ministers. Our website is SNAPnetwork.org)

  2. KCMO has been waiting on priests to do the right thing for far too long. maybe they should just get out of the way.

  6. The man is a criminal pedophile, just as a getaway driver is a bank robber. Any priest that goes along quietly is nothing more than an accessory after the fact. May they all rot in hell.

  7. I hope Finn does resign but he never will. He is too much of an a$$hole to do the right thing!

  8. I think that we need to let SNAP simply take over the Diocese. They seem to know how to raise money and they can help us all lead better lives.
It is gratifying that they feel the need to attack all priests while representing class action law firms.
Bless you SNAPPERS for all you to to undermine the church.

  9. Tony often posts the current SNAP propaganda on his page. I wonder why?

  10. As long as the church and apologists like yourself continue defending the criminal leadership of the diocese, these abuses will continue. Ratigan and Tierney are just two more in a long line of deviant priests that the church has covered up and allowed to continue. If priests don't want to be considered part of an exclusive, all-male child sex club, then they should stand up and change that culture. But no, they will continue to rationalize and obfuscate, and silently go along with the CONTINUING coverup of abuse. For shame to all priests.

    TO ALL PRIESTS ...
As Edmund Burke once profoundly said:

"The only thing that is needed for evil to prevail is that good men do nothing".

So the question to the priests of Kansas City is ... ARE YOU GOOD?

Or will you continue to acquiesce with your SILENCE?

  13. Interesting, because at the church I attend whenever they have a ceremony where other priests attend, the priest at my church always jokes that the bishop "likes all THOSE guys", and during mass always refers to Finn as "Finn" and not Robert.

  14. Exacly how is this "TKC BREAKING NEWS!!" ?

  15. So where is the outrage and calls for the Kansas City Superintendent to resign because of the many abuse allegations involving teachers this year? My guess is that groups like SNAP targets the Church because it is most likely to pay out large settlements for unsubstantiated claims.

  16. My kids go to Catholic school, so that' where MY outrage comes from. And from apologists like you rationalizing the deviant abuse that is going on. People like you are why the abuse continues. You should worry less about SNAP and more about the eternal damnation of your soul for condoning this behavior.

  17. 1/2 of the priests have never liked Finn anyway because of his conservative views. This is not news.

  18. That's right, nothing to see here, move along. We've hidden the perverts, so let's all just forget about the criminal elephant in the room.

  19. The priests that spoke out for his resignation have just made toast of their careers. Finn will make sure that they get exiled to fucking Siberia.
