TKC BREAKING AND EXCLUSIVE NEWS!!! OCCUPY KC HAS NO LOVE FOR "CULTURE OF RAPE" AND PLANS A KANSAS CITY STRIKE FOR VALENTINE'S DAY 2013!!!

Given so much recent hand-wringing about domestic violence, witness Occupy KC taking a look at the big picture.

To wit . . .

WHILE CORPORATE MEDIA IS USING DOMESTIC VIOLENCE TALK AS A WAY TO DIFFUSE CONTROVERSY SURROUNDING A CELEBRITY MURDER/SUICIDE . . . OCCUPY KC ANNOUNCES PLANS FOR A VALENTINE'S DAY STRIKE IN KANSAS CITY AIMED AT PROTESTING GLOBAL VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN!!!

It's nice to see this movement keeping up their pace and this bit of counter programming for Valentine's Day is the PERFECT alternative for so much commercialism aimed at the heartstrings of the public.

V-Day in KC ~ An International Event

The next big effort for Occupy Kansas City and whichever other groups they can get on board is V-Day - One Billion Rising. The woman who is spearheading this project internationally seems to be genuinely dedicated to women's issues and amongst other projects she set up a rape clinic in the Congo (if you are not familiar, with what is going on there, search "coltan mining rape congo"). She is calling for one billion women to strike on Valentine's Day 2013 in protest of rape and it looks like there are many hundreds, if not thousands, of groups and organizations who are supporting this effort to some degree or another. The effort in Kansas City will probably be a bit more timid, focusing mainly on raising awareness and connecting victims to resources.

The main concern about this event locally is that it may end up being comprised of mostly white, mostly middle class people since so much of the outreach is online and therefor, by default, is generally geared toward people who have internet access (aka mostly white, mostly middle class people). The integrity of the V-Day organization seems beyond reproach and Occupy Kansas City seems really dedicated to working toward making this event appealing to all people who are affected by rape in the Kansas City area as well as facilitating some tangible benefits, such as possibly forming one or more rape support groups, so there is a chance this event could be pretty significant.

Here's the facebook event page and a brief description of the One Billion Rising event...

About One Billion Rising

ONE IN THREE WOMEN ON THE PLANET WILL BE RAPED OR BEATEN IN HER LIFETIME.

ONE BILLION WOMEN VIOLATED IS AN ATROCITY

ONE BILLION WOMEN DANCING IS A REVOLUTION

On V-Day’s 15th Anniversary, 2.14.13, we are inviting ONE BILLION women and those who love them to WALK OUT, DANCE, RISE UP, and DEMAND an end to this violence. ONE BILLION RISING will move the earth, activating women and men across every country. V-Day wants the world to see our collective strength, our numbers, our solidarity across borders.

What does ONE BILLION look like? On February 14th, 2013, it will look like a REVOLUTION.

ONE BILLION RISING IS:

A global strike
An invitation to dance
A call to men and women to refuse to participate in the status quo until rape and rape culture ends
An act of solidarity, demonstrating to women the commonality of their struggles and their power in numbers
A refusal to accept violence against women and girls as a given
A new time and a new way of being

  1. Nice one TKC.

Will they also protest the mark up on flowers. That is totally unfair too.

  2. These folks just get farther and farther away from any issues that they could actually even try to do something about.
But that takes actual work and WAY more time than a photo op or some TV face time.
The fifteen minutes of fame from these local folks ran out a very long time ago.

  3. OCCUPY a jail cell

They are just a bunch of foolish douchebags living in a fantasy world.

  4. Wasn't there some allegations of sexual assault, rape rape, and prostitution at the occupy encampment? Hope nobody gets rape raped at the protest.

  5. Wake me up when they start Occupy A Vagina.

  6. Nice of them to come to KC. The idea that anyone would want to occupy anything in the city limits kinda reflects badly on the collective judgement of the organization, but I guess if you gotta sleep like a hobo KC would be the place.

  8. Is this group still around?

The love to start controversy but don't finish it. We need better ideas.

    And a new slogan.
