TKC BREAKING AND EXCLUSIVE NEWS!!! TKC BOYCOTT SUCCESS!!! P&L DISTRICT DEAD LAST NIGHT DESPITE SO MUCH KANSAS CITY COLLEGE STUDENT PARTYING!!!
Last night college students returned to Kansas City and the "cool kids" destined to struggle their way through middle-management for all of their careers spent most of last night drinking.
The Thanksgiving homecoming drink-a-thon is a tradition for college students across the nation.
And so we noticed . . .
ON WHAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN A LIVELY NIGHT . . . THE TKC BOYCOTT HAS ASSURED THAT THE P&L DISTRICT WAS ALMOST COMPLETELY ABANDONED!!!
Even worse, there are more than a few roving carloads of gangsta rapper wannabes in that area which don't really inspire much confidence in the overall safety protections for the area. But I digress . . .
The Turkey day drinking pre-game was simply desolate @ The P&L District around 10ish in the PM.
Meanwhile . . .
Wesport was lively and they even had to rope off d-bag college kids hoping to drink themselves stupid @ Kelly's.
Now, let's do the math . . .
With nights like last one . . . P&L seems destined to CONTINUE costing this town MILLIONS every year.
Meanwhile, Westport traffic was more organic and not even THE STUPID KC STRIP THAT REMAINS A HORRIBLE IDEA can claim to have helped generate the crowd.
So . . . While amateur urban planners might try to explain local nightlife with a lame Freakonomics passage . . . The only thing we know for sure is that the best laid plans of mice and men and City Hall eco-devo experts have a long history of turning out to be money-losing FAILURES like the P&L District.

Tony, the college kids who come back to the metro aren't the kinds of Jersey Shore gang who frequent the P&L District.

You're right about trouble in the area. 20th and Grand at 2:30 and I woke up to a bunch of black guys screaming fuck and literally fighting in the streets. 3 cop cars later and all was mostly peaceful again. Never happened here before and I'm not sure I want to continue this "urban living" experiment if this is a sign of things to come. About the same time another group of black guys also were loud and milling around their cars. Weird. Obtrusive. Annoying. And yes, I'd say the same if they were white.
ReplyDeleteIf a person was to just drive around the downtown area some evening and really see what goes on and who is out moving around the streets would you really honestly think to yourself, "hey this is cool I want to move down here and live amongst this shit."

Most passed on the P&L 'cause they thought it was closer to the ordinance definition than anything so far.
ReplyDeleteDo you think that the Las Vegas strip has more locals than tourist? Locals are just that, they prefer local establishments over commercial properties. The only thing the P&L is good for is tourists staying downtown. As a downtown resident, I drive by there every day to spend my money elsewhere. In addition, the crime downtown is no worse than Johnson County. I have always felt safe, and the few incidents I did see, involved white Johnson Countians

In fact, it's even less exciting and even more overpriced than a food court in an indoor mall, with the same design feel that it came out of some master plan that could be replicated 100 times in any city in the U.S. Once you've been to one, you've been to them all.
It is interesting, if true, that Westport is making a comeback, since it was declared all but dead when the P&L opened.
And very interesting if it is drawing off the P&L's target of white college kids and yuppies now that the novelty has worn off the "new" place.
