This afternoon 3rd District Councilman Jermaine Reed seemed enthusiastic discussing minority hiring opportunities during a chat on a Kansas City Gospel station.
"There will be an increased opportunity for MBE contractors on this project," said Kansas City's youngest Councilman.
Like it or not, meeting MBE/WBE requirements is good law in the U.S. of A. and Councilman Reed seems to have found his niche advocating for this bit of diversity in Kansas City hiring.
Alternatively, detractors of the New East Patrol project persist and continue to point out the unnecessary destruction of homes.
Remember that Councilman Reed faced recall earlier this year over this controversy and a few others . . . And the question remains . . . Will support of minority contracting bolster the career of embattled Councilman Jermaine Reed?
It's an important question as opponents already start to prepare to challenge Mr. Reed for his office.

It's only a good deal if you are an MBE/WBE contractor or the politician who gets the expected contribution.
Here is how the contractors typically work:
They do not understand the work and therefore cannot bid it so they would like to work T&M
Materials are a 5-10% mark up over invoice.
They want 10-15% on labor and you had better call the hall for them because they don't understand the work and your general foreman will need to run their crew.
You will definitely need a 2 party check system to make sure that your/their suppliers get paid.

I would like Jermaine a lot more if he would cease to be nothing more than a sock puppet for Alvin Brooks. He has done some good things but he needs to become his own man. Maybe this is the start of that.
Taxpayers didn't pay attention again and screwed people in the process. No wonder Kansas City is such a terrible place to live.
Jermaine had better start making some real progress otherwise the writing is on the wall.

Let me take a wild guess... all of Jermaine's friends, friends of Alvin Brooks and Miles all get gravy contracts. Meanwhile, NOBODY from the neighborhood will be working on this project.
I oppose the EPD campus because it is in CPD and it basically tells everyone in EPD east of Blue Ridge to suck it,,,,but that parkland would be no good. The crime lab cant be that close to a highway.
It would be fine. They ruled out vibrations because Brooklyn has just as many vibrations as the highway. They also said the EPD couldn't be on a hill. Brooklyn is hilly terrain. Nothing about this project makes sense.
HEY 4:50, I totally agree with you. having worked east patrol in the past before retiring i can tell you there is never any cops east of I-435. It pisses me off cuz I live out east. The city needs to build another station east of 435. Will that happen? Probably in about 30 years. Then it will be to late cuz the ghetto pukes are slowly but surely moving that way
Jermaine is so stupid he can't even spell MBE. He will sit in lengthy committee meetings on various topics and the only topic he'll utter a peep about is MBE. If someone mistakenly forgets to mention hiring goals, Jermaine angrily accuses them of ignoring MBE issues on purpose.
Jermaine is a Johnny One Note, Step-n-fetch-it for Alvin Brooks. Someone needs to gear up to run against him. He will not be difficult to defeat.
Jermaine needs to find a new career. He will not be in office next time around.
I'd like Jermaine more if he would lead the effort to fire the city manager and department directors.
