Day 23: Akin used sensationalized rhetoric to rationalize his extreme views by claiming the Senate passed a version of the NDAA that legalized bestiality
St. Louis, Mo.-- In September, at a campaign stop in Columbia, Todd Akin explained that his opposition to the Senate version of the National Defense Authorization Act was due in large part to his belief that it legalized bestality. Nowhere in the Senate version of the bill is bestality legalized, but rather, this comment is another in a long series of instances where Akin misstates facts to support his extreme beliefs that are outside of the mainstream for Missouri voters.
Akin Claimed The Senate Version Of The NDAA Legalized Bestiality. During a campaign stop in Columbia in September 2012, Akin claimed the Senate version of the National Defense Authorization Act legalized bestiality. Akin, said "The Senate version of the bill… They also had the legalization of bestiality, which is a pretty weird thing. So, I'm on the House side of the negotiations on that. So, we got rid of the bestiality thing" [Akin remarks in Columbia, 9/27/12]
“Once again Todd Akin’s extreme beliefs are grounded in lies and sensationalized rhetoric,” said Erik Dorey, McCaskill for Missouri spokesman. “These comments show Missouri voters that Todd Akin is not a serious candidate who will fight for Missouri families. Instead, Akin focused on an extreme set of beliefs that undermines our country’s economic and national security priorities.”
