There has been ZERO focus on public safety in the past couple years and a good example is when the mayor, police chief, and prosecutor gave a joint press conference to announce the latest out-of-town program that's supposed to turn things around without them doing anything different themselves, it was the FIRST TIME IN 15 YEARS that they had made a joint announcement.
All the running around making public appearances, new technology, new "programs" and departments, and PR fluff will never take the place of command attention, mayoral leadership, and cooperation with the police by residents in high-crime neighborhoods.
And without addressing the most basic issue of public safety, all the "economic development" schemes aren't going to achieve any long-term success.
Who's going to invest their own money in high-crime areas and who wants to take the risk of working there? And there's more crime and violence downtown all the time. Where hundreds of millions of dollars of YOUR taxpayer money has been invested.
A city that works.
Just not for you.

@SOS

Agree 100%.

And would you also take notice of the location of the shooting, 23rd & Topping, just blocks away from the current location of the East Patrol Police Station. Moving East Patrol further away from the nucleus of its service area isn’t going to amount to much more than continued embarrassment for this town’s Mayor and Police Department.

Lining up with religious institutions for the sake of their own prosperity is a hideous way to govern a town. They’ve already shot at the Mayor on the Plaza. One would think that would have been enough to really focus and produce a viable public safety initiative. Nope. They continue to meet secretly to discuss the issue and hope that the brain power in the room is enough to make the difference.

Well stated “All the running around making public appearances” doesn’t do a darn thing! All the self-promoting and PR photo opportunities do little to control the rising body count.
People further East should anticipate a rise in crime if their Police facility closes.

We need a state takeover. Who will file the paperwork?

We need to fire the KCPD and hire mercenaries.
