Another Note On KC Star "Redskins" Flap

In reality, there's really no defense of the choice to identify any group of people by the pigment of their skin . . . Two national media outlets now pick up the story of a recent Star editorial decision:

Deadspin: The Kansas City Star Tries Not To Print The Word “Redskins” Because It’s A Racial Epithet

USA Today: 'The Kansas City Star' defends reasons for striking 'Redskins' from copy

Meanwhile, our Kansas City pro-football team tagged with a remembrance the genocide of Native Americans is struggling . . . But we'll have more on that later.

  1. I know a local who is full blooded Indian whose family has been in these parts for years. He has proven to me that he is a true Indian no doubt and the United States Government says he is as well.

But I stopped by his place out of curiosity to ask him just how he felt about all this. First he told me English people as he calls all white people are fucking stupid and to anal about the most ignorant things. I asked him if the word redskin bothered him and he said, “Dave you know me many years and is my skin red?” He goes on about how his skin is then same color as well tanned white men and that majority of the people in the area think he is Mexican. He is right his skin isn’t red it’s a deep tan no doubt. Oh by the way he said show him a real white man he’d like to see one.

He thinks some English boys running another paper as stupid as the KC Star is, did a parody about Indians and called them redskins and the name stuck. If Washington wants to call a ball team redskins don’t bother him none. To him only person his people know who has red skin is what the English people call the devil. He said joke all you want but it isn’t Indians killing each other all the time and they thought we was savages.

It was a great talk, one to be honest never have had I guess because I accepted him as he was just another guy I like. He works, has his own place, takes care of, and goes on in life just as most people do who have a clue.

I did have to ask about the English thing and he grins and says all the same area of land to him over there called England.

  6. As a native American let me just say this is bullshit! If the star wanted to do something for Indians they could leave us in the will.

  7. Dave's friend doesn't speak for all natives. Native Americans have spoken out against this many times. Its been my experience that natives are proud of their heritage & don't care to become Americanized. There is a resurgence in rediscovering their native languages, & what's left of their culture, & teaching them to their children. There was no mention of this man's nation, & please don't tell me its America.

  8. Byron, ok so Dave's freind does not speak for all the Native Americans. Why do you think that the people that have spoken out against the name speak for all Native Americans? As in all things there will be some for, some against and a whole lot who don't care.
