TKC EXCLUSIVE!!! READ THE FINE PRINT AS MAYOR SLY, CITY COUNCIL & A FEW HUNDRED VOTERS STICK KANSAS CITY WITH A TOY TRAIN BILL FOR +$100 MIL!!!

I think it's important to pause and take a good look at how Mayor Sly James, The City Council and the business community are betraying Kansas City and destroying local Democracy.

The Downtown Toy Train Streetcar is not mass transit. It only runs less than 2 miles.

The Downtown Toy Train Streetcar will not spark development and City Hall has long history of failing to make this dangerous brand of "tin cup urbanism" profitable.

The "TDD" put into play with the help from Council Dude Russ Johnson is one of the most DESPICABLE schemes ever devised in Kansas City political history because it cuts out voters who are going to have to pay for this pipe dream in the long run.

Furthermore . . .

KANSAS CITY'S DOWNTOWN TOY TRAIN STREETCAR IS YET ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF THIS TOWN'S MISPLACED PRIORITIES AND FAILURE TO LEARN FROM COSTLY MISTAKES!!!

The Downtown Kansas City Streetcar is a reason to move FAR AWAY from the grips of an incompetent political class and a vicious business community that looks only to profit from this beleaguered town.

THIS COSTLY DOWNTOWN TOY TRAIN STREETCAR IS PUTTING KANSAS CITY ON THE TRACK TO FACE THE SAME FINANCIAL RUIN AS CITIES LIKE DETROIT!!!

P&L District FAIL, Sprint Center without a promised pro-team and so many other local white elephants provide proof that City Hall FAILING TRACK RECORD when it comes to attracting a profitable crowd. Sadly, there isn't any evidence that this scheme will work and the architects of this STREETCAR CONSPIRACY don't want anybody asking questions.

So the plan continues because nobody cares enough to vote and Mayor Sly and City Council don't seem to feel accountable to their constituents or anyone besides the power brokers and special interests who really run this wicked little town.

To wit . . . Take a look at this document that's going far and wide. This is really a testament to how much Democracy doesn't mater.

Here's the money quote:

"The critical information is that a register voter that lives within the TDD must apply for a ballot. The application period will commence August 31, 2012 and will end at 5:00PM on October 2, 2012. Applications and maps of the TDD boundary are available at the Jackson County Circuit Court Administrator's office at 415 East 12th Street, 3rd floor, and the application form can be downloaded from http://ww.16thcircuit.org/streetcar.

Ballots will be mailed on October 30, 2012 to those registered voters that have submitted a valid application. The ballots will be due back by mail no later than December 11, 2012."

After the jump there are a few of the finer details . . .

Read the fine print on how this travesty will be executed . . .

Are we Portland yet?

Why is it that politicians avoid criminal charges here in Kansas City. In many cities, theft is theft. Here we just look the other way. Chicago and Minneapolis are just as corrupt but the worst of the worst do time.

So this document is going "far and wide" but yet somehow it is a secret process?

the Left bitches about the Right wanting people to show a picture ID to vote but when the Left comes up with an "application process" to vote no one has a problem with that?? And this is above and beyond already having to be a registered voter. I've now found 4 more place I will not be going and spending my hard earned money they are commonly referred to as River Market, the Downtown Loop, Crossroads, and Crown Center/Union Station add these to the already boycotted places such as P&L and UNion Station. I hope the entire city decides to boycot paying for their toy train and does not shop or visit these areas, so as not to have to pay the taxes.

Anonymous said...

It would appear that you also boycott common sense as well.

Anonymous said...

Why is that because I refuse to pay for the mayor's toy train?? Or because I think making special rules on top of the existing process to get registered to vote is not only ridiculous but some might call selective voting. Is 7:31am from the Mayor's office or are they City Council?

Anonymous said...

How do you provide proof of voter registration?

Juan Carlos Arribadoche said...

Can we get the train to play Wilco songs at every stop?

Anonymous said...

I walk in and show a MO Drivers License. Some carry the Voter Registration Card. And others show no ID at all and just say they are John Brown.

Taxation without representation started one revolution. Perhaps it's time for another.

Wasn't US AG Eric Holder's ballot given to some random white guy???

Keep crying suburbanites and ninnies. Downtown is the fastest growing part of the metro and quickly becoming one of the most densely populated. So, by all means, "vote with your feet". Everybody else is moving into areas with good transit and things to do. enjoy your Northland culdesacs, Chili's, and your lone entertainment...internet whining.

Anonymous said...

The problem is once all the KCMO "suburbanites" move out of KCMO there will be no funds left to subsidize downtown. But the Chamber guys don't care because they have made all their money and can retreat to JOCO.

Anonymous said...

"Densely populated" means dodging bullets at every turn. Obviously 8:40am has never been to "God's Country" the Northland. Where people wave at you with all five fingers instead of just one. There are numerous things to do in the Northland, and they are not subsidized by the city government. Enjoy your horrible school district, and your subsidized train, Shopping centers and entertainment venues and your criminal element. It's humerous that your idea of good transit is a less than two mile train. WOOHOO look at all that mass transit on the train.

Anonymous said...

This is another example of a mayor trying to leave his mark on the city. The P & L district is the last good example of this. Misplaced priorities -- amen brother!

Anonymous said...

Jackson Country residents are so easy to screw over it's ridiculous.

Anonymous said...

Nothing like an open Democracy huh?

Anonymous said...

8:51- Uh, EVERY SINGLE THING done in the Northland is subsidized by the government- unless you think it was the private sector that built them highways.

Anonymous said...

Really? My house? The power lines? The gas lines? The stores? The yards? Or do you mean just the roads? Those same subsidized roads that are cover the downtown with pavement. Idiot.

Anonymous said...

We recently moved out of downtown. It is growing. New vagrants everyday. New section 8 apartments every day. Great place. Nobody digs through our trash now, and I miss parking my car three blocks from my house. Its melancholy to move. I guess if i miss it, i can always piss on my front step just to get that downtown smell again.

Anonymous said...

Actually, yes. The power lines, gas lines, sewers, stores, shopping centers, development, jobs, stormwater runoffs systems, parks, Fire, EMS, police protection, the actual subdivisions, and even many, many private homes were directly subsidized by city, county and state taxpayers.

Anonymous said...

Good riddance, crybaby.

"Someone dug threw my garbage and used things I threw away"

"I had to walk using my legs and feet"

"Poor people where allowed to exsit nearby"

What a fucking sniveling scared little bitch you are.

Anonymous said...

Its humorous your idea of "God's Country" is blandness, consumption, waste, shitty development, locust-like sprawl and being unable to survive without driving. God would be ashamed of you.

Anonymous said...

$ well spent. Its about goddamn time this city started living up to its potential.

Anonymous said...

No shit. The only "travesty" is that its taken this long to start building a transit system in this city.

Anonymous said...

Yes many things in the Northland were subsidized by the Gov't. But look at what we don't have, parks (unless the developer put in a small one) we don't have Police (o.k. maybe 10 for the whole northland) EMS (o.k. 5 for the whole northland) Some Fire engines, Public transportation is almost non-existant, but we all pay the same taxes and we we all pay for this train when the city can't afford to pay for things this city needs

Anonymous said...

This is just another Power & Light District in the making. The city is so corrupt.

Anonymous said...

It sad that they wont let the kc taxpayer vote real tran plan like the one clay is trying to get put on the ballat. The machine hate clay or anyone like him that has real idea and ready want to put the city to be first class town doesnt care ling his pockets.this town going down hill fast with nazi mayor who just want dictor more then leader.

New slogan for ya TKC: "2.2 miles IS NOT Mass Transit"

Think about it.

Anonymous said...

Voice your displeasure by shitting in a ziplok bag and mailing it to Sly. Include a note that says this is what I think of your train.

Anonymous said...

"2.2 miles is a start"
-Every mass transit system in the world

Anonymous said...

Downtown/Crossroads folk are getting nervous and defensive. Maybe the party is ending.
A stupid streetcar will change nothing, and end up being a big embarrassment.

Anonymous said...

Agreed.

Anonymous said...

Lol. Downtown sucks. The city couldn't pay me to live there.

Anonymous said...

Enjoy living in your hell hole. Oh, be sure to be in your loft before 9:00 PM with the doors locked. Bad things happen down there.

Anonymous said...

A whole two miles worth. What a joke!

Dv3 said...

If the first 2.2 miles is going to cost 100 million, how will KC afford the rest?

Why isn't anybody asking Sly these questions?

Everyone enjoys whatever little neighoborhood tehy may live in and parochialism is certainly alive and well in these comments, but the downtwoners really have to get a little more serious about facts and a little less breathless about eh rah rah.
Downtown at last count had a population of around 19,000 in a metro area of over 2 million. Most of the buildings downtown are either government buildings or heavily subsidized half-empty commercial structures, and the primary businesses there are largely large old banks, laws firms, and folks who make their living either lobbying, fighting with, or representating government of one level or another. There are a handful of small independent businesses like restaurants.
All that is fine, but it's not some spectacular place, it's not growing fast, density is not its own reward, and there's an awfully lot to do, see, and enjoy elsewhere throughout the metro.
The $100 million streetcar will do nothing to cause economic development, attract more residents to live downtown, enhance a convention industry that is being killed by technology, or suddenly make KCMO downtown like Portland.
A well-run municipal government provides basic services like public safety, streets, water, code enforcement, parks and other public amenities, sommon sense zoning and business licensing, and has a predictable set of common sense tax policies to pay for that. What that does is to provide an environment conducive to economic development and jobs, helping to create neighborhoods for residents, and helping to make a city more attractive to visitors.
KCMO DOESN'T EVEN TRY TO DO ANY OF THAT.
And what's left is lipstick on a pig.
Good for barbecue contests and not much else.

Anonymous said...

City Council should read these comments.

Anonymous said...

Your voter ID card

Anonymous said...

But people are actually voting.

Anonymous said...

How is the street car going to connect to anything? You koolaid drinkers are idiots if you believe in the future we will build a mass transit system connecting to this toy train. Mass transit means to move masses. Not tourists.

Anonymous said...

You are 100 percent right. The city last budget vote was talking of laying off firefighters, not giving raises to the cops or any other city employee, cause they're so broke. But now they want to spend 100 million on a toy train?? Don't make any sense. Have fun riding the thing when there's no cops downtown to protect you

Anonymous said...

11:54 you said it well. I don't begrudge those who want to live downtown but the city as a whole can't afford to spend hundreds of millions to make it a convention and tourist attraction. The fact is Downtown is sucking up taxes faster than the rest of the city can pay them.

Anonymous said...

Not to mention the $ it will cost to maintain it! We know how well KCMO takes care of its infrastructure!

Try this said...

Simple solution to make EVERYBODY happy:
You vote for it - You pay for it.
You vote against it - You don't pay for it.
No taxation without representation. What a concept.

Tony, go to the library and look up what William Rockhill Nelson did when he fought the corrupt Corrigan Brothers who wanted to monopolize the railway lines in early KC. Same deal, over a hundred years later, except the Star is now a jellyfish instead of the vox populi it originally was. You're the only one speaking out about this travesty. Follow the money - that's what Nelson did and he busted the whole lot of them.
