Thanks to quite a few KICK-ASS TKC TIPSTERS we have an important report regarding a culture clash within the KCPD that's kind of hilarious.
Let's provide a bit of background first. Check it:
Since he was first sworn into office KCPD Chief Forté has taken some criticism over his beard.
Apparently, the Chief suffers from a common skin condition among African-American men and has been allowed to grow a beard after providing proof from a doctor as is standard policy within the KCPD and other police departments throughout the nation.

All of this is standard stuff and common knowledge . . . But here's where it gets hilarious . . .
AS A REACTION TO CHIEF FORTÉ'S SPECIAL CONSIDERATION AND PROBABLY ALSO IN PROTEST OF A FEW OF HIS OTHER POLICIES: MORE THAN A FEW WHITE MEMBERS OF THE KCPD HAVE ALSO REQUESTED PERMISSION TO GROW BEARDS BECAUSE OF SKIN PROBLEMS. IT'S CALLED "THE GRIZZLY ADAMS MOVEMENT" AND IT HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR QUITE SOME TIME!!!
Kudos to the KCPD for making their bushy and satirical stand regarding equality and management disputes incorporate a rather gully 70s reference.
Upon first hearing of this I thought the story was too funny to be factual but more than a few AWESOME TKC TIPSTERS have confirmed the movement and even a couple of officers at my neighborhood QT provided a bit of confirmation while chuckling.
Here's the most eloquent insight into the sitch from somebody who knows:
"The Grizzly Adams movement is the real deal. A select few commanders got peeved about the scruffy look and started asking for medical excuses (per policy). The backlash regarding the commander requests was apparently enough that Forté has evidently issued a moratorium on enforcing the policy. It's been going on for several months now."
Again, for a change, TKC did a bit of research and even asked around about this ground breaking info. The story provides important insight regarding race relations, divisions within the department and the ongoing frustration of the rank & file . . . Then again, it's also about KCPD PROTEST BEARDS which makes it hilarious and AWESOME.

ReplyDeleteIf the chief has a skin problem and growing out a beard helps with it then let him be. It is not a big deal. These other officers need to act professional or find a new job. Cowardly racists need to get over it and find a new profession. There is no room for this kind of mentality in society.
ReplyDeleteOK. I must comment because it's an issue that solely affects African Americans...and it's medical. As an AA woman, I prefer a beard over the razor bumps. They are gross and distracting. Racism is partly defined by ignorance...so at least, some of you should take the time to google pics of razor bumps. Get some knowledge. Get grossed out - then get over it.

I was one of the first to get a beard waiver. It's my passive aggressive way of saying "fuck you" and your favoritism. Those of you crying racism are absolutely correct, however you're wrong about who the racist are. When an officer is pulled from the bottom of an eligibility list for a specialized unit and made a detective, guess what race he/she is? When an officer can't read or write, or uses phrases like "we be 10-8" on the radio guess what color they are? Their black mentors will go to hell and back to not only prevent their termination, but enable and stear them towards positions they lack the ability perform at a high level, much to the detriment to the department and it's already tarnished reputation. Do they do that for the white officers who can't read or write? Oh wait there aren't any!!! And just for the record I'm not white. I'm just tired of working with substandard officers for the sake of diversity!

Or I'm in a house where the mentally handicapped relative is allowed to "exist" in the basement on a filthy mattress, because the family collects his government check & spends it on crack? More often than not I'm the only human in the equation, surrounded by monsters in pursuit of self gratification through drugs, alcohol, and/or violence, without any regard as to the damage it does to those around them. The military on the other hand teaches leadership, initiative, responsibility, discipline, integrity, etc... How many of these commanders with shady reputations were in the military? NONE!!!

I have to say that I feel for these officers that don't feel like they have a say. The dept. has some problems and progress is slow. All I can say is that we need to hang with the team. Do what's best for the team and we will be better for it.

ReplyDeleteWe have enough real issues in our city and our department without getting all pissy about how much facial hair we're allowed to grow. The policy is pretty clear and makes sense. As long as it is applied equally we need to accept it. If it is not being applied equally, then violations should be addressed. I'm getting kind of tired of listening to some (not all) of my younger colleagues whining about irrelevant issues. None of us were drafted into the KCPD and none of us are being forced to work here against our will. No matter where you work or what kind of work you do, there will be some things that you don't like or agree with. Whining about it with your sector buddies or in anonymous blog postings is not an honorable way of addressing your grievances. That's how sniveling cowards do business. If an issue truly is important to you, then 'grow a pair' and stand up and be counted. If you find working for the PD intolerable, then please quit so you can (hopefully) be replaced by someone who actually wants to be here and is willing to endure reasonable personal sacrifices to perform their job.

ReplyDeleteYou are obviously giving a commander speech, so I would assume your at the top of the food chain thereabouts! Remember In-Service this year? All of the dirt has been spilled. What has been done about it? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! Will changes come about? ABSOLUTELY NOT! Things will just be thrown to the wayside like they always have been. It will always be YOU against US and vice-versa! This department (lower rank and file)needs to have the backing of the Command Staff. The Patrol folks due the hard grunt work day in and day out risking their lives 10hrs a day and are always treated like red headed step-children. Start showing some respect, treat them like adults, and back your lower rank and file. Don't assume their guilty when they get an OCC, like one certain commander in MPD. The job used to be fun (the field), but with no backing by "YOU" it's quite obvious why no one is doing REAL POLICE WORK anymore!
