Kansas City Mass Transit Hot Mess

Toellner Tells It offers a great link that shows the Internets telling us it's hot and that mass transit in KC is horrible (but won't be fixed by a toy train): A visual heat map that highlights commute times from various parts of Kansas City.

This information does not support an argument against streetcar. Please educate yourself on the goals and benefits of streetcars...as well as some of the challenges. The streetcar conversation is not the same conversation for light rail or commuter rail. Be for it or against it just be informed.

Shut up Russ.

Wow you are an idiot. Please tell me how that commute time map shows any need for a streetcar. Wasting 100 million dollars on a train that goes no where is retarded. People who think this trolley will increase tourisim are retarded. There is no need, tell me what void this streetcar is filling. You are retarded. Educate me , please because I am fucking pissed we're talking about building this waste still.

This issue hasn't been put to bed yet? Whose face needs to be saved?

Of course, only about 10% of the jobs in the metro are in downtown KCMO, so this data is interesting and would be even more so if it were still 1959.
Most of the I-470 traffic in the morning is going into JoCo via I-435 and even what little is on 71 Highway disappears to a trickle by the time you hit 63rd Street.
If you're going to look at serious public transportation, it would be good to review the various employment centers instead of just wishing downtown were still the center of the metro. It hasn't been for decades.

Streetcar's main benefit is economc development. It is not trying to move massive amounts of people a significant distance...nor should KCMO try. Streetcar's goal...and has been successful at this goal in every place but maybe one...is to create communities and economic development. To attract young professionals and retiress who want the urban lifestyle. Not sure if any of you have noticed but KCMO has lost the ability to win families based on education and giant subdivision developments. That ship has sailed. The KCMO has to play to their strengths and that is continuing to develop an urban community. If any of you have a better idea on how else to attract taxable income to KCMO then please by all means share. The Detroit model of letting the inner core rot is not working so well.

Building a streetcar downtown will not make families move downtown. End of story. Do you even live downtown? Do you know where the nearst elementary school is? A streetcar is nothing more then a gimmic. Kansas city is not even that urban in comparison to other cities people bring up when they are hyping the streetcar.

Please explain how a 2.2 mile track increases ecomonic development....

9:43 - leave the 9:03 post again slowly. much of what you asked is answered. streetcars will not attract families...that war is lost...streetcars will attract taxable income...the best kind...young professionals and retirees with disposable income...research other cities...open your mind...learn.

Ok, its all well and good to say things like "streetcars will attract taxable income" and "young professionals and retirees with disposable income" but listen up buddy that ain't the truth. Just because you build a streetcar does not make people and business come running to the city. SHOW me how the streetcar does that, don't just tell me. I'm a young professional, and a streetcar would have no influence on me at all weather to move to downtown. You want people to move to downtown? Fix the schools, fix the water lines. Until the new grocery store opened in power in light a few years ago there wasn't even a place to buy
groceries downtown. Get over this streetcar thing cause its bullshit
