TKC EXCLUSIVE AND BREAKING NEWS!!! KANSAS CITY STREETCAR VOTE DISPARITY!!! MAYOR SLY AND TOY TRAIN SUPPORTERS WILL GET "YES" VOTERS A NOTARY BUT "NO" VOTERS SEEM TO BE ON THEIR OWN!!!

Check out another insipid aspect of Kansas City's Downtown Streetcar Taxing District Vote . . .

"I received a letter from Connect KC today signed by Mayor Sly James -- Lots of pro comments about the streetcar being good for development, plus a reminder that my ballot must be notarized before it is mailed back. The letter provided a number that I could call to schedule a notary, 816-###-####. There was also a stamped envelope with a card that reads,

"Yes, I support the creation of a Transportation District in Downtown Kansas City. Please contact me about notarizing my ballot."

"This leads me to believe that I am on my own to find a notary if I vote no, but they will be ever so accommodating to "yes" voters. Obviously there is a LOT of money being spent to get this on the ballot. I hope you do get the word out to those that did get ballots that this will cost them in higher property taxes, rents and sales taxes. Part of the proposed tax would come from a special property tax that would be assessed yearly. The formula is .70 for every $100 of assessed value with assessed value being 19% of market value. So a property with market value of $150,000 would cost a that property owner about $23 a month more in taxes. We don't need MORE taxes to drive people and businesses out of the downtown area. And I have seen no mention of where they plan to obtain yearly operating costs that can run into the millions."

In just about every way possible this KC Streetcar taxing district election is rigged . . . Kansas City politicos and supporters should ashamed of themselves for how they have subverted Democracy in order to get their way rather than attempting to build any kind of consensus for a pricey toy train that this entire town will eventually have to support.

DEVELOPING . . .

So who's running this election, Joe Pendergast?

I think some people need to go to jail over the handling of this phony election. Hope the Missouri Attorney General is watching all this.

As long as you don't need a voter registration photo id it looks kosher, no story here ha ha ha

What a shame. I think they are looking at a cort challenge.

Operating costs will be covered by the assessments. Not a secret.

Right-o. And no political party has ever done something like driving people to polling places to vote. Noooo. Never happened.

Bullshit. I don't know who is feeding TKC info but the election was approved by the courts BEFORE any ballots were requested. Everything has been done in public. Sounds like Slimy Dale Schulte is behind this.

Shut up Doug Stone......and go back to Johnson County, where you don't have to pay for TOY TRAINS!!!!

Wow, and people want these same people to have control of the police department. Ya right.

WHAAAAAAAH!!!! A blogger whines and cries when something doesn'yt go their way...a journalist recognizes that this election follows state law and they research and report how the law came to be. The City is doing nothing wrong. What is TKC's point?

I think TKC's point is the process itself seems needlessly complicated and lends itself to charges of corruption.

The election, as opposed to showing up with the proper credentials, usually a form of identification, has added a layer of paperwork, designed to reduce the number of extemporaneous voters who would, in TKC's opinion, NOT vote in favor of this measure.

I am not being a smartass, that is just what it looks like to a cursory observer.

It looks corrupt as all hell.

The sad part is that should the 555 voters approve the toy train, Sly and the Family Chamber will view it as confirming the legtimacy of their agenda and plow forward with more nonesensical ideas. Like downtown hotels. All the while continuing to ignore neighborhood services and the efficient and timely delivery of City services.

Figuring out how to work the system to get the votes is kid's stuff.
The real eye-opener will be how to fund teh construction and most importantly, how to pay for ongoing operations and maintenance.
It's always easy to spend someone else's money and the commercial property owners will be stuck with huge bills. Meanwhile, the city will be offering TIFs to newcomers. What's the economic devlopment strategy again?
