The End Of A Westside Story

Here's a bittersweet tale from Kansas City's best neighborhood . . . Also, it's just another example of neighborhood CAN centers building important relationships with the community.

Many of you may not have known his name but you saw him, along with his mom and sister walking the neighborhood every day. If you travel Summit Street - you saw him standing at the fence waiving and our neighborhood watch person. Or you saw his masterpiece yard decorating for each of the holidays. This past Easter Luis Duran tried to talk me out of our 5' wooden rabbit. The other week he was telling me to watch his yard for 4th of July - he loved his American flags. Luis, 36 passed away Wednesday. He was the best cheerleader the Westside and Guadalupe Center ever had. Luis had a strict sense of right and wrong. As my neighbor on Holly he set himself up as my security guard. I thought you needed to know. I will miss his visits to the WCAN Center, his giggle and his hugs, the twinkle in his eye as he told a story. Luis was a Westside original. Our condolences to his mom and sisters.
