Is Consensus Overrated In Kansas City?!?!?

The Star's Steve Kraske claims: Kansas City needs a strong-mayor system of government . . . Or maybe one-term Mayors are the wave of the future during this new era of austerity and FAIL.

  1. Imagine what Gloria would have done if she had more power! Not a pleasant thought.
Has she left the building yet?

  2. Who cares what Steve Kraske says??? I'v heard him alot on KCUR. In fact, I think it's odd a *private paper* writer has a prime (or any) spot on a PUBLIC RADIO station.

I could care less what his opinion is.

  3. Kraske should stick to the horse race aspects of politics that he loves so much and leave the serious thinking to others.
How effective any organization is depends on the PEOPLE WHO RUN IT, and as long a s KCMO surfaces most of the candidates it does, you'll have exactly the same dysfunctional operation. The focus on structure and process just ignores that fact.
If the KCPD were run by local control right now, they'd report to Funkhouser, Jooly, and Sharp. Please don't tell me how that would increase accountability until you've talked with those three about public safety. They're as clueless as the police board.
There are ways to make KCMO government better, but I'm afraid they all involve some actual attention, involvement, and even work, by the residents.
In a democracy you get precisely the government you deserve.

  4. Consensus is overrated in general. It gives those with whacko views too much power to block progress.

  5. The consensus in my house is that it's over-rated.
