THE FAKE UNION STATION RECOVERY!!!

Because I really like Matt Campell's work and I think he's probably the best reporter working at The Star . . . I won't call his recent Union Station reporting misleading, just cheerleading . . . And I realize that we all have bosses and agendas to keep happy.

Still . . . Today The Star touted a $1.1 million surplus for Union Station.

Buried, but still reported dutifully in the article were fun facts more representative of Union Station's financial future:

The station has a net deficit of $2.4 million.

There's also a $435,000 overdue bill from Kansas City Power & Light Co. that will be picked up by the taxpayers of KCMO.

MAKE NO MISTAKE, KANSAS CITY'S UNION STATION IS STILL AN OVERWHELMING FINANCIAL DISASTER!!!

The cheerleading is nice but it doesn't change the fact that the place still loses money and will remain in the red until people come to terms with the longstanding money losing situation.

  1. Problem with this blog, or maybe the KC Star.

I just read the articles in the KC Star, and, now this from Tony.

If Tony is right, to me anyway, its very relevant.

Honestly, I don't know what to believe.

    The information is 180 out.

I honestly wonder what is the truth?

The biggest crook at Union Station is the guy running it--George Guastello.

Besides that, since February, when Georgie Boy let go what was left of a great marketing/PR team (due to "budget concerns," which was a bunch of hogwash since he is now outsourcing it, which is costing even more money), there hasn't been a major, hell, not even a minor, exhibit going on at Union Station.

Tony, you need to look into the shady dealings of ol' George.

  5. Love the comment by "Ghost of Union Station" saying, "there hasn't been a major, hell, not even a minor, exhibit"?!? Has this person missed that dinosaur thing they've been doing all year?!? I'd say "Ghost" must have part of this "great marketing/PR team" of the station's past! Clueless!

And maybe if "Anonymous" who posted on 9/12/10 at 1238pm knew what he/she was saying, you'd know that the current dinosaur exhibit going on was started and pretty much completed by the previous marketing/PR team at Union Station before they were let go, not the current outsourced group. (And by the way, I was not a part of the previous marketing/PR team, but I do have very good highly placed sources both no longer there and still left hanging on to their jobs.)

I see now that since the current group has no effing clue (and this includes George Guastello) is extending the exhibit to January 2011. Why is this? Because George and his outsourced team don't have a clue how to run the place. Better yet, ask George how much money he has raised since he started there.

So let me rephrase---what major/minor exhibit has Union Station produced since the end of February?

  7. Anyone can see Union Station is finally getting on very solid footing financially. The addition of the Chamber and KC Area Development will only add to the picture. Mr. Guastello and team are to be commended for their efforts to right size this organization, which too long ran without well planned direction. Think Tony's blog comments are missing the point...the station is finally paying its way and covering expenses and no longer digging financial holes it can't fill. I say, as did an editorial in this weekend's KC Star, Congratulations Union Station! There is reason to celebrate! Good Work!
