Gloria Squitiro Gloating For The Weak

Thanks to a FANTASTIC reader for sending me This week's Funky newsletter . . . I've highlighted the portion of the missive in which Gloria Squitiro laughs last at Kansas City.

Check it:

Dear Folks,

This Week's City Business

The Mayor was asked to be a part of a conference call with Vice President Joe Biden and three other mayors yesterday to talk about stimulus funding and how the federal government can do a better job in serving city governments with the funds. All three mayors were asked for their advice on the subject. Our Mayor felt that the Vice President was sincere in trying to help cities get their fair share of stimulus funding.

Speaking of funds, Police Chief Jim Corwin applied for stimulus funding and was one of the few big cities to not only receive the funding, but to receive the full amount that he applied for. The Mayor is thrilled to have a professional Police Chief who is a partner with him in looking after his constituents highest concern - feeling safe in one's own home and city. The funding will allow the current training academy class, which will graduate next Thursday, to be hired by our city, instead of by neighboring communities. The current class also happens to be the most diverse class that the Chief has ever had, so this is good news all around. The grant will also allow the next candidate class to begin on time in September. The Mayor is still trying to restore cop funding so that the January cadet class can begin on time as well. The reason that this is so important is that if we don't keep the classes going as scheduled, then we lose too many officers on the street for our protection.

The Mayor spent most of his time this week talking in-depth with council members about current initiatives they're working on. While a lot of the news in the media has been focused on hype, the work of city government has been proceeding at a very nice pace.

One area that has been proceeding quite well is the Mayor's City That Works program, which meets on a weekly basis. The program is designed to find ways to strategically target a small amount of money to make a big impact on basic city services. One of the areas that the Mayor has been focusing on is the city's 311-complaint system. He was distressed to learn that over 600,000 calls went unanswered last year; therefore, he is working hard with that department to insure that calls are answered in a timely and professional manner. The Mayor feels that much progress has been made in reaching this important goal.

On a More Personal Note

The judge ruled in the Mayor's favor today regarding the "volunteer" ordinance. Funk is grateful for the decision of the court this morning. The judge's decision protects the authority of the mayor's office, not only for his term, but for future mayors as well. Funk is glad to have this issue behind him so that he and the City Council can fully focus on the significant challenges that face our city.

City Council Lady Beth Supports LGBT Community!!! Stands Up To Hate Speech!!!

Here's something to think about on a Friday night for folks unlucky enough to be reading blogs right now . . .

It's not okay for serious politicos to talk trash about different races or genders but when it comes to the LGBT folks . . . Everything is fair game and there are no political consequences for smacking that group around . . . I'll have to file that info away for later. To wit, the Council's decision yesterday is still causing controversy and we'll have to wait and see if there's any pushback . . . EWWWWWWWWWWW!!!

Anyhoo . . . The bright spot in all of this is that Council Lady Gottstein stood up for one of her key constituencies in the biggest fight over 5k Kansas City has ever seen.

Here's a money quote from the Council Lady in an e-mail that was sent wide. The e-mail was primarily sent to Bishop Tolbert who organized the Life Changers. This particular passage concerns the most controversial figure in the Life Changers Conference and one of the reasons so many folks objected to Kansas City funding the event:

"Prophet Todd Hall, one of your guest speakers, has a record of hate speech against specific universes, specifically our lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender brothers and sisters. I am confident that you would never permit Prophet Hall to preach hate from your pulpit. The passion with which you engage to find common ground amongst diffuse communities has set a new standard for many. Yet, Prophet Hall’s message is one of judgment and condemnation. I cannot support taxpayer dollars for an event which promotes a voice so contrary to yours and mine."
Read the rest of the missive that KICKASS TKC TIPSTERS intercepted.

What's fun about all of this is that Kansas City's diverse communities are usually at each other's throat and this note confirms that there is no love lost between the African-American Community and the LGBT community . . . At least no love except on the downlow.

SQUITIRO'S RETURN TO CITY HALL

I guess we need to stock up on smudge sticks . . .

KMBC is reporting that the Mayor "won" the Volunteer Ordinance case . . .

There's a copy of the ruling online.

Nevertheless, when she does come back . . . That just might possibly be the best thing for this blog EVAR!!!

Keith King at NBC ACTION NEWS says that GLORIA IS COMING BACK!!!

Just when we thought the City was running low on lawsuits . . .

NOTE: A great many people are saying A LOT of bad things about The City Attorney right now . . .

Kansas City's Tender Trap

Okay . . . Here's just a bit of advice for everyone no matter what age, race or gender . . .

Whenever you run around with a sexy stranger you meet at a club, you take your life into your own hands.

Also, the dating scene in Kansas City isn't just bad, it's killer.

A recent example:

  • Two men lured into alley by women to be robbed get shot

  • Robbery Victims Lured With Sex, Police Say

  • Police: Shooting Victims Lured To Alley By Sex

  • Police: Sex Lured Westport Shooting, Robbery Victims
  • Be careful: Bullets Fly Regularly on 71

Crime Scene KC: "KC man shot other motorist on 71 Highway, prosecutors allege"

    Kansas City's favorite reckless driver

There is a free festival will be held today in order to celebrate the upcoming induction of Derrick Thomas into the NFL Hall of Fame . . . And already this town forgets that Missouri politicos called the guy a reckless driver and fans couldn't even get a stretch of highway named after him immediately following his tragic demise that worked out even worse for all of the kids from various mothers he left behind.

KC Star : "The living's fine in Johnson County"

A Star quote about snake life in JoCo (i.e. most of it) says so much more about the mentality of the metro paper-of-record.

Future Mayor Sly James and all his money

KC Tribune confirms a fact floating around all of Kansas City political circles . . . Sly James is raising money hand over fist:

Sly James Campaign Ahead Of Funkhouser in Funding

Make no mistake . . . Elections are decided with cash in Kansas City, and everywhere else, and at this point Sly stays winning with better parties and more supporters than any other Mayoral candidate in the metro.

    Kansas City On Food Stamps

WDAF reports that the recession isn't over for all of us: "More Metro Stores Accepting Food Stamps as Economy Falters"

    Uncle Ed Once Again!!!

Midtown Miscreant reminds us all of Kansas City history we'd like to forget.

Metro Crime Disparity: Westar's Wittig Earns Early Release for Bank Fraud

I'm taking excerpting this bit of content from Dan Margolies because he doesn't know what to do with it: "A federal judge has agreed to release former Westar Energy Inc. executive David Wittig from prison about a month before his sentence for bank fraud was due to expire."

Nouveau KC Hipster Swinging: Fling Trailer

This flick filmed partially in Kansas City featuring the new Superman will soon be on Showtime . . . Where it belongs with other softcore fare . . . Fling has great cinematography and at 1:55 in this trailer there's a nice shot of Crown Center fountains at night . . . But in the end it's a tale of young people learning all over again that wife swapping in any form is a nasty idea and ultimately unsatisfying . . . Unless you're trading up, I guess.

In the era of low expectations, fewer people thrown out on the street is good news

KC Biz Journal: Kansas City-area home foreclosures decrease

High Hopes (Again): Winning 8 Games is equivalent to a Superbowl Victory in KC

KMBC: Chiefs fans can buy single-game tickets for the upcoming football season Friday morning.

For the record, I think the Chiefs will be slightly better this upcoming season . . . But nobody outside KC will notice.

Ugh: Yoga for Kids in Kansas City

From a PR Release: First yoga studio in KC primarily focused on serving kids and families

A few things to take care of during the overnight . . . But there's still a couple of things we need to talk about on this Friday.

TKC EXCLUSIVE!!! TAKE THREE: SERIOUS TALK OF YET ANOTHER FUNKY RECALL!!!

A special thanks to another new found AWESOME TKC TIPSTER who is probably one of the most politically connected people I know . . .

    Here's the deal . . .

THERE'S WORD THAT A FORMER COUNCIL DUDE IS GETTING TOGETHER SOME SERIOUS CASH TO FUND YET ANOTHER RECALL CAMPAIGN AGAINST THE MAYOR!!!

We'll see if the council dude comes up with the money and that's basically the bottom line on this one . . . It's simply a question of funding given that there is very little political will to keep Co-Mayor Funky or Co-Mayor Squitiro.

If this brand spanking new recall actually happens . . . The big money that will support the thing will make it move faster than the previous grass roots effort.

But the "secret" is out . . . Mayor Funky will continue to be a punching bag for the remainder of his term . . . From Joe Miller's tell-all to the tremendous amount of discovery from the Mammygate trial that might have been which will soon come to light (tomorrow). Funkhouser is now Kansas City's biggest target . . .

So, this newest latest recall is being sold as a way to make the time between now and the next election cycle more productive and the next Mayoral race even more interesting.

As always . . . It's just a question of seeing whether or not the money turns up.

I'm only wondering if their sales pitch is as interesting as Gisele Bundchen getting sessy For London Fog.

    We'll see.

    Developing . . .

CITY COUNCIL BETRAYS LGBT COMMUNITY!!! KANSAS CITY FUNDS HATE SPEECH!!! WAVED THE RULES TO FLIP-FLOP!!!

The Life Changers ordeal was one of the ugliest votes I've ever witnessed . . . Here are the details . . .

The question for funding for Life Changers was held till the end of the legislative session . . . Here's how it started:

Councilman Sharp moved to bend the rules in the way they are normally bent in order to fund Life Changers after the fact . . .

    Marcason rescued herself . . .

Ford withdrew himself from the vote . . .

    Curls abstained . . .

    Marcason abstained . . .

Cindy Circo didn't know what to vote on . . . But then voted yes . . . I mean "aye"

The motion failed to amend the ordinance . . . At first.

Then they moved to try to get rid of all of their conflict for agencies which City Council folk belonged to . . .

What was really obvious is that nobody has an idea what they're doing legislatively and EVERYONE was giggling through the process.

Sharp moved to amend the ordinance again . . . This time so Council folk could vote without conflict.

    That amendment passed. 10-1.

Then Council Lady Gottstein wanted Life Changers funding taken out to vote on at another time.

Councilman Sharp pushed hard for to fund Life Changers because of all the secular programs the conference offered. "It's a simple $5,000 grant."

Councilman Riley argued for Life Changers Funding as well . . . But noted that "he detests racially hostile or motivated speech." Which didn't really make sense because nobody was talking race. He had to be reminded and prodded as to what exactly he was voting for . . .

Only Council Lady Gottstein gave her requisite respect to Bishop Tolbert but begged for Life Changers funding to be part of a separate vote.

    7-4 Gottstein's motion failed.

They called for a vote on the ordinance with Life Changers Funding intact . . .

In one of the most frightening displays of incompetence I've ever seen all of the Council had to tell Melba how to vote. John Sharp was in charge of the Council today coaching all Curls and Sanders Brooks.

The Ordinance passed 8-3 . . . It was classic Kansas City horse trading in action.

    What does this mean?

THE MAJORITY OF THE CITY COUNCIL AND THE MAYOR SUPPORTED HATE SPEECH AGAINST THE LGBT COMMUNITY!!!

Now there's a precedent for funding any hate group with political connections . . .

    Even worse . . .

CITY COUNCIL AND THE MAYOR CAN CHANGE CITY RULES (I.E LAWS) AT THEIR WHIM!!!

THE COUNCIL FLIP-FLOPPED ON PROMISES TO TAKE OUT FUNDING . . . OBVIOUSLY THEY CAN'T BE TRUSTED TO KEEP THEIR WORD!!!

    Sadly . . .

Under pressure the Council will twist and turn . . . But ultimately chose to do the more politically expedient thing.

On the bright side . . . It was nice to see Gottstein stand by her LGBT constituency . . .

Life Changers gets their 5k to promote hate speech . . . Life goes on . . .

  • Congratulating Terry Riley

Terry Riley earned a resolution from The City Council today co-sponsored by 12 members of the Council for his back to school rallies . . . See, I told you he was going to be Mayor.

Note . . . I even earned a mention from The Mayor as The Council brags about not having the news on TKC first . . . Bleh. In this instance they beat me.

TKC EXCLUSIVE!!! KC LGBT COMMUNITY WINS!!! CITY ATTORNEY'S LEGAL OPINION OPPOSES FUNDING FOR THE LIFE CHANGERS CONFERENCE!!!

TKC TIPSTERS ARE AMAZING AND THEY CARE MORE ABOUT EQUAL RIGHTS AND THE RULE OF LAW THAN ANYBODY IN KANSAS CITY!!!

I've just obtained some important news about an upcoming City Council vote for funding of a conference that the LGBT Community is calling homophobic.

CHECK OUT A TKC EXCLUSIVE DOCUMENT FEATURING CITY ATTORNEY GALEN BEAUFORT TELLING CITY COUNCIL FOLKS THEY SHOULDN'T FUND LIFE CHANGERS!!!

Read the memo for yourself courtesy of AMAZING TKC TIPSTERS.

The first part of this memo notes that separating the funds from the religious to secular parts of the conference (if there were any) hasn't been documented and would be impossible and not part of the initial contract.

The second part of the document is the most important . . . The City Attorney notes that funding the conference AFTER THE FACT is against City Hall policy. The conference is over . . . Giving it money after most of the folks have left town is against the rules apparently.

    To wit . . .

FUNDING THIS CONFERENCE THAT THE LGBT COMMUNITY OPPOSES WOULD BE A TRAVESTY AND COULD EXPOSE KANSAS CITY TO LEGAL RAMIFICATIONS!!!

And here's where we really need to give AWESOME TKC TIPSTERS their credit . . . They are not only saving Kansas City 5 grand today . . . But also sparing this town from future lawsuits.

All thanks to a basement blog and a nice Investigative Series. Sweet.

  • TKC EXCLUSIVE!!! KANSAS CITY MINORITY CONTRACTORS QUESTION WBE STATUS ON CITY HALL CONTRACT!!!

Recently, there has been an uprising coming from local minority contractors on the subject of another firm they think unfairly attained WBE status. It's worth considering that this kind of thing is unprecedented but might represent a lot of doubt in City Hall authorities in the wake of repeated questions regarding H&R Block/J. E. Dunn and talks that claim those companies didn't live up to their TIF Agreements.

Take a look for yourself . . . A document forwarded to TKC reveals a serious look about a local construction company soon to get funding (Ordinance #090579) from City Hall . . . Some say under the guise of MBE that aren't up to snuff.

Check out the letter of protest from Minority & Women Coalition, Women Construction Owners and Executives, KC HACE and the Minority Contractors Association of Kansas City regarding the WBE Status and a city contract.

In both the H&R Block/J.E. Dunn case along with this new drama . . . What's clear is that the City Manager and the Human Relations Division are under siege when it comes to minority contractors and their inability to live up to the low expectation of simply doing their job.

TKC Talks With Darla Jaye Tonight

I should be on KMBZ 980 Live tonight with Darla Jaye at around 8 in the PM. News Radio 980. Last week I didn't know she had other stuff to do so there's a lot to catch up on . . . Tune in or even call. This should be good.

Kansas City Bachelor Action To Fight Cancer is already heating up the Internets!!!

The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) Bachelor Auction is the new hotness for lonely, charitable ladies on the local KC Internets right now.

  • Check out the ACS CAN Bachelor Auction web page if you haven't already.

  • And the news and bawdy lady trash talking is fast and furious on their facebook page.

Even better . . . Darron Story, host of Kansas City After Hours, agreed to emcee the event yesterday . . . And while I think that all lonely women with disposable income should be giving their cash to me . . . I guess this is a good cause and a rare opportunity to purchase men with cash while doing the right thing.
  • Priest Holmes Wants To Stay At 22%

Former Chiefs Running Back Priest Holmes recently authored a fantastic blog post on the subject of life after the NFL. Without question the guy knows the challenges he faces and seems prepared to beat the odds.

"Sports Illustrated reported that within 3 years 78% of retired NFL players will be divorced or bankrupt. Without their fortunes, these players will be faced with a future of severe disabilities and health issues stemming from injuries received while playing . . . As for my take on the SI article, I realized that I am on the road to beating the negative odds stacked against retired football players. I strive to stay in the 22% of retired players who have been offered the opportunity to be a living legacy today and for years to come."
Still, ther's a downside to this post. After reading the thoughts of Holmes I can't help but lament that he was hurt and his career ended prematurely . . . Obviously, Holmes is an intelligent and insightful man . . . Sadly, the events after his injury led Kansas City to get suck with a scumbag like LJ to take his place without coming close to living up to his example.

"TKC Best Blog in Kansas City"

That money quote comes courtesy of KC Wired who writes what might the first complimentary review of a so-called "reverse racist." This town has become a tabloid and I can't help but take a little bit of credit. A big thanks to KC Wired for the rather kind name-calling. Seriously.

TKC Share Of Mind With Radioman

This guy deserves a TKC link if only because he's been like a colleague and friend I never wanted on this blog . . . Still, if you're reading this blog then angry missives are your thing . . . Try his blog which isn't as funny but twice as long and less informative. Good luck.

    Recall, Democracy and Propaganda

The Star reports that the case of a dude involved in a controversial Lee's Summit Recall is going to jury today.

This story really isn't that interesting me but the last remaining Mayor Funky supporters are already spamming this one . . .

So let's get the facts straight . . . This case is completely unrelated to the Funky Recall because . . .

  • Let's face it . . . The politics in Lee's Summit are nearly akin to that of the deep South . . . It's a different ball game out there where Republicans fight with each other over the way they tie their shoes.

  • People actually complained about their names being forged . . . No such thing has happened during the Funky Recall . . . In fact . . . The only news that I hear relates to a great many folks regretting that they weren't more involved.

Finally, what's more news worthy to the people of Kansas City is that . . . THERE ARE QUITE A FEW REPORTS OF INTIMIDATION COMING FROM MAYOR FUNKY'S CAMP!!! They checked lists, they made calls they went after folks involved in the recall . . . This would be troubling if the Mayor had any political capital left . . . Luckily, he doesn't . . . And it's only going to get worse. Natch.
  • Give the KCPD a brake

This is the second big police car crash story to come out of KC this summer . . . Damn people, start paying attention . . . It's not like local cops don't have it hard enough with less funding from the City and bored Star writers trying to pick a fight . . . Here are the links to the latest police car accident story demonstrating that traffic is nearly as dangerous as the people in this town:

  • The dashcam in a KC police car captured the action as the patrol car was T-boned by another vehicle.

  • Officers Trapped When Police Car Rear-Ended

  • Damn . . . Here's yet another KCPD Car Crash Story . . . "Police Car Hit, Crashes Into House: Second Time In One Week Police Cruiser Hit"

At least someone in South KC has a strategy

NBC Action News reports that it doesn't take very many resources to rip off the people in this forgotten part of town: "Police say burglars are using gum and other substances to cover peepholes during apartment break-ins across south Kansas City."

Making a Northland Golf Course Pay

The lesson here is that people with bigger bills get more consideration: "Kansas City has reached a settlement with a Northland golf course it initially had said owed $1.6 million for missing city water and other fees."

Old Lady Walks Off Cancer (or something)

KMBC recently featured an inspiring tale which typically illustrated an old white woman working harder than everybody else: "A 96-year-old woman walks several miles every day and has outlived five sisters who all died of breast cancer . . . She is preparing to walk in the upcoming Race For The Cure."

Twitter Hate Crimes In The News

It's nice to see a bit of reporting on the latest Internet fad involving something other than excited ad people desperate to prove they can still sell something (to people without any cash).

    Check it:

  • A local minister believes the attack on his nephew in Poplar Bluff, Mo., is a hate crime.

  • Metro Pastor Says Twitter Post Led to Hate Crime
  • No Business Like Northland Ho Business

WDAF: "A 20-year-old Northland woman is in trouble for allegedly running a prostitution business out of her home, and police and residents say that they are surprised that it was happening in their neighborhood."

And for some reason I'm fairly certain I saw a movie with this exact plot not so long ago . . . Or maybe I've just been traumatized by watching Cleavagefield . . . And thinking it was surprisingly good.

Use the term "Frisbee Champion" Sparingly

Curtain Call For Crappy Suburban Theater

The Examiner reports on the physical destruction of place that was left abandoned long ago because of better quality theaters, more entertainment options and changing demographics (i.e. white flight): "After years of inactivity, the old Blue Ridge Cinema at Interstate 70 and U.S. 40 is scheduled for demolition to make way for a restaurant and retail strip.

The demolition is scheduled to begin Monday morning and is expected to be completed within 10 days by Industrial Wrecking Company."

    Kansas City Wife Beaters

Sadly . . . Lots of spousal abuse stories in the news as of late and that's not even counting the Mayor and his weird-ass situaiton . . .

  • A good turnout isn't what they were expecting: More Calls than Expected in Domestic Violence Program . . . Via The JoCo SOB.

  • WDAF reports that actually sitting down and talking to abused women is a great way to find out information regarding their predicament . . . Check it: "Police in Kansas City, Missouri, are testing a new tool that officers hope will prevent domestic violence-related homicides. The new tool is a simple, 11-question survey that assesses a victim's risk of being killed or seriously injured by an abuser."

    Late Night Contemplation

A few good things coming up this morning . . . Also, I was talking to one of the smartest people I know about this blog thing and just couldn't get it across that it's all interconnected and long gone are the days where people "own" any kind of digital content . . . The best we (creators) can hope for is a reference that's more valuable than anyone thinks and we get that only by showing respect in return (linking, trackbacks and providing an open forum) . . . As new media progresses the ethics of online communities will be refined and upheld OR we'll all be just as horrible and worthy of scorn as the other publishers we replaced . . . My guess is a little bit of both.

To wit . . . For late night TKC readers I'm offering a nice link to a lingerie photo gallery of Jenna Presely . . . Finally, just for the late night hours . . . I am loathe to admit that I've been thinking about the fact that Brad Pitt has had sex with Angelina Jolie but he still isn't certain about the existence of God . . . Some people really do need things spelled out for them.

TKC EXCLUSIVE!!! TKC KNOWS BUT DOESN'T CARE WHERE THE JONAS BROTHERS ARE STAYING IN KANSAS CITY!!!

Sometimes I really hate the people who read this blog . . . Nevertheless, the amount of information that I get a peek at is amazing. Sadly, a lot of the info I get doesn't fit the demographic that normally reads this site i.e. the most connected people in KC and all of the City Council and other politicos.

If I had access to greater celebrity than this dump of a blog maybe I could make some off the offbeat info on this blog work for me . . . So I'm thinking that older MILFs might care that more than half a dozen newbie TKC TIPSTERS are telling me the location where Jonas Brothers are enjoying luxury accommodations tonight. Maybe it's info that will make them seem cool to their tween rug rats. I don't know and I don't care . . . Older ladies with kids can be so fickle.

And to be honest, I'm much more interested in taking an old, well-seasoned women to the Marriott Downtown (on their dime of course) than whether or not the Jonas brothers are staying there or wherever . . .

My subtext is sexy . . . Tween/Disney brand bands have no talent.

ORANGE REVOLUTION DISGUST ON THE WAY!!! THE END OF THE GAG ORDER WILL ONLY FURTHER HUMILIATE THE CO-MAYORS AND KANSAS CITY!!!

    It's going to get ugly again . . .

All of the enterprising reporters in town are salivating at the release gag order and more shame and disgust for Kansas City to pile on Mayor Funky and Gloria Squitiro.

Even the reporting today was spirited regarding the opportunity.

The NBC Action News Story was clear about the news: "Gag Order to Lift Friday in "Mammygate" Case"

Lynn Horsely at The Star seems a little confused on the subject: Bates gag order may be lifted Friday

KCTV5 writes a cryptic headline but the story just relays the gag order lifting details: "Bates' Settlement With City Not Done Deal"

And . . . As usual, I have one interesting detail that will spill in this ordeal that the local media will confirm or maybe be too embarrassed to mention . . . But the whole hot mess will be a typical Kansas City celebration of incompetence and lies featuring some discovery and sworn testimony that once again demonstrates Mark Funkhouser's inability to lead and nearly epic failure at the hands of his wife.

    Waiting For Joe Miller's Salon.com Tell-All

TKC commenters broke news yesterday regarding Joe Miller's upcoming Salon Tell-All.

Once again The Star confirms information garnered from this blog which is nice.

Even better . . . The Funky Mayoral embarrassment won't quit for Kansas City and should remind us even further of a mistake made by a thin margin . . . There's more news coming regarding Funky revelations . . . Stay tuned.

The Failed Kansas City Downtown Renaissance was for The Jonas Brothers!!!

P&L District still isn't making any cash and costs Kansas City big time . . . The Sprint Center is without an anchor tenant . . . And so many Downtown restaurants have closed up shop . . . But tonight local media is celebrating a crappy band coming to town . . . Too bad the rest of the metro is falling for a scam run on tweens.

    The Sunset in Downtown

A nice look at the evening in downtown with a bit of corporate sponsorship making white people feel better about themselves.

    The Evening Link Up

Here's just a few things I'm looking at this evening:

  • Call it a Kansas City Grin: Suspect identified in E. 29th St. homicide

  • K-State Controversy: Kansas State coach Bill Snyder is angry about report that he and other athletic department officials received undocumented payments.

  • Yet another Metro Shooting link: 2 People Shot At 27th, Cleveland

  • Missouri still waging Meth fight: Missouri Pumps $7M Into Fight Against Meth

  • 8 wins would more than make up for millions of tax dollars: Jackson Co. Residents Line Up For Chiefs Tickets

  • A KC Birther Story (of sorts): Young Mother Who Gave Birth in Basement Arrested for Murder

  • Phelps Clan Stay Winning: KC Funeral Picketing Ordinance on Hold

  • Finding the KC Connection to Thievery: Bank of America sues ex-employees now at UMB in Kansas City

  • Officials desperately want you to believe that things are getting better: Kansas City Fed district economy stabilizes
  • Roy Blunt Goes Birther

Ancillary Adams laments the leadership (or lack thereof) in the Show Me State demonstrated by Roy Blunt promoting the blog content Birther story . . . On the bright side, it's kind of sweet to see so many people standing up for a suspected illegal immigrant . . . I wish the same reaction occurred when they were talking about booting out all of the Mexicans.

Blogging is bitter: Not a single comment on Kansas City Star Food Blog Story!!!

Food blogs are mostly written for friends . . . I notice food blogs in town have some pretty decent reaction and reader response . . . However the Star's profile of online foodies fell flat and demonstrates that cross-media synergy with print media happening in Kansas City . . . Probably because very few people read the paper anymore.

TKC EXCLUSIVE!!! MORE OPPOSITION TO COUNCIL FUNDING LIFE CHANGERS!!!

KICKASS TKC TIPSTERS recently got a hold of an AMAZING MESSAGE TO THE MAYOR AND COUNCIL that's currently causing quite a stir throughout the Hall. The message that TKC TIPSTERS have intercepted really is a hard hitting missive that speaks to the core of the problem with Kansas City Funding the Life Changers Conference which the Council will vote on tomorrow. Check it:

    Dear Mayor and Council Members,

I am writing to you to express my concern and dismay regarding the vote from Wednesday’s Public Safety and Neighborhoods Committee regarding the NTDF ordinance number 090596, and specifically pertaining to the Life Changers Conference.

I was instrumental in working with Mayor Kay Barnes on re-crafting the NTDF ordinance to streamline the application process, solidify the measures of the ordinance and improve the administration of the ordinance. I devoted countless hours over the years and am still very interested in NTDF. It remains near and dear to me.

The approval of the Life Changers conference, in my opinion, violated the spirit of the NTDF ordinance as well as the separation of church and state. I have done research on the Life Changers conference and it included worship services. To the best of my recollection the NTDF Committee never funded an event that involved church activities, worship services or the promotion of a religious agenda. We did fund activities sponsored by church organizations, but those involved no faith-based activities.

The vote of the Public Safety and Neighborhoods Committee most likely violated the separation of church and state and set a dangerous precedent for future NTDF activities. It is impossible to separate the non-religious activities and the expenses for such from a single event that included religious activity. The Life Changers event placed the City’s logo on their website. While I have not first-hand seen their program, I was told by some who had that the logo was there as well. Their funds were, as I understand it, comingled with the proposed NTDF funds, so it is a rationalization to state that the NTDF funds were used for the portion of the Life Changers event that were not religious in nature. Even if the funds were earmarked for non-religious activities, if the event involved religious components, and NTDF funds were used for the event, then NTDF funds were used for a religious event. It is as simple as that. As Aristotle said, “A is A.”

I would strongly encourage you to review the taped meeting of the Neighborhoods Committee and reconsider the discussion of staff that suggested the potential conflicts of funding Life Changers. I would also like to offer that I am available for conversation and would welcome the opportunity to discuss my NTDF knowledge and experience with you, if you think that might be helpful. It is my fervent hope that you will reconsider the vote of Wednesday and vote to deny the funding to Life Changers at the Legislative Session this coming Thursday. To do otherwise is to use taxpayer dollars to support a religious/faith-based event that proselytizes a specific religion and its beliefs.

Thank you for your time and consideration regarding this ordinance.
This message has City Council folks afraid of further frustration that will come their way according to KICKASS TKC TIPSTERS. I know that the LGBT Community is planning to voice their opposition to funding that was recently passed though committee as well.

But it's not just supporters of equal rights who should be upset . . . As the previous message points out:

KANSAS CITY FUNDING A RELIGIOUS EVENT CLEARLY VIOLATES THE SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE!!!

There are flimsy guarantees that the money will somehow be separated from purely religious activities but so far there's no evidence that has surfaced as to how this will be carried out.

    Important Question:

IF KANSAS CITY IS GIVING MONEY TO ONE GROUP WHO BASHES THE LGBT COMMUNITY WHAT'S TO STOP THEM FROM FUNDING THE PHELPS CLAN?

    Furthermore . . .

IT'S GOING TO BE INTERESTING TO SEE KANSAS CITY POLITICOS RUN A BALANCING ACT BETWEEN THE LGBT COMMUNITY AND THE AFRICAN-AMERICAN COMMUNITY WHO ARE AT ODDS ON THIS ISSUE . . . A STANDOFF BETWEEN PREACHERS AND RAINBOW BUDDIES COULD BE A CLASSIC KC SHOWDOWN!!!

In an otherwise quiet Council session . . . The result of local politicos picking sides on matters of finance, religion, lifestyle and culture should be interesting. The mistake some Council people are making is the assumption that nobody is watching as they flip-flop on earlier promises to stop funding to this group.

Previously in this TKC Investigative Series . . .

  • Fashion For Hope

I don't leave my mom's basement on GP . . . However, I'm always eager to support a good cause and Kansas City's hotties looking their best.

To wit . . . Check out Fashion For Hope.

Some photos from last year's event sent my way have convinced me it's not only a great cause for Hope House but also a pretty decent way to meet attractive trophy wives looking to be impressed by big donations and such. By the way, in the middle of the photo illustrating this post is Brooke Johnson (and her amazing boobs) who owns Bella B's Boutique and is the founder of the fashion event.

Kim Carlos Runs Kansas City Politics

I hate success stories. The success of other people only makes me realize that dominating the local blogosphere from time to time isn't really that much of an accomplishment and it's really just a way to pass the hours in my mom's basement.

Anyhoo . . . I would be remiss if I didn't point out that politicos all over town are talking about Kim Carlos coming up in the world.

Also, I refuse to call her only her first or last name because "Kim Carlos" sounds so cool with all those consonants. So . . .

Kansas City Political Insiders know that Kim Carlos is a cancer survivor, mostly because she won't stop telling everybody as much. More importantly (to everyone else) Kim Carlos is currently a juggernaut in City Council Campaign Circles.

Kim Carlos and Cindy Circo are hooked up and talking about more than just hair and nails. She's running the Circo Campaign . . . Probably away from all mention of Citadel Plaza.

Kim Carlos looks cute with Cathy Jolly . . . Those two are buddy buddy and might just reunite for another campaign.

KIM CARLOS IS A BIG PART OF MIKE BURKE'S MAYORAL RUN ACCORDING TO KICKASS TKC TIPSTERS!!!

Best of all . . . Kim Carlos pretty much owns John Sharp now because of a 2k in-kind donation. Check the latest finance reports for KC Consulting, she's the guy's biggest contributor outside of the Unions.

What does all this mean? First of all, it's rather inspiring that some broad can beat cancer and then go on to run a great many local Democrats.

Secondly, there is no arguing with Kim Carlos: She's a business lady, cancer survivor Democrat fixture with Council connections that run deep . . . She has a lock on "professional services" (heh) to the City Council and I guess it couldn't happen to a more deserving lady . . . The fact that KC Council Politics now resembles a Lifetime Prime Time Special shouldn't really bother anybody but the most sexist and insensitive people . . . Like TKC. Natch.

    Bobey Bob Berdella

The KC Photog Blog captured some street art featuring a local adaptation of a popular Hispter theme which led me to an upcoming movie soon to premiere at The Screenland: Berdella

    Mike Hendricks Justifies White Flight

While the writing is lame, the point of the latest Hendrick's Column has a bit of merit. He concludes: "You shouldn't feel ashamed for steering clear of the area" i.e. The Eastside . . . And since he lives in JoCo, on the topic of white flight Hendricks finally demonstrates an understanding and familiarity with the subject matter of his column.

Indy Home of Ginger Rogers Unsold

The Examiner reports that nobody really want to buy the Independence house where Ginger Rogers was born.

The little one-story home at 100 W. Moore St., where actress/dancer Ginger Rogers was born on July 16, 1911, is attracting some interest from buyers since it was put on the market in March, but not as much as its owners or the Realtor would like.
Larry LaGrece, salesman for Reece and Nichols, said even the asking price of $20,000 hasn’t attracted buyers.
Unfortunately, this is yet another example of how local history is essentially worthless . . . Remember this the next time someone wants to build or finance a museum.

HIGHEST UNEMPLOYMENT RATE IN A GENERATION HITS KANSAS CITY!!!

So much for the end of the recession. KMBC: "In the metro area, the unemployment rate is at 10 percent. It has been 25 years since Kansas City last saw this level of joblessness."

This stat and not a measly Royals victory should be front and center on The Star's web page . . . But it's not.

    Kansas City Marketing Stop

The dudes from Plaid Nation recently made a stop in this cowtown on their nationwide tour and the video they came up with isn't that bad. Yes, it's all about promoting the virtues of selling people crap they don't need and an interview with American Copywriter . . . But the footage of KC makes the clip worth watching.

Also, they stopped in Branson as well.

Thank You Pitch: Child-Porn Charges Now Define Kansas City Jazz Scene!!!

I read the first 200 words of the latest Pitch cover story and it seems tragic and disgusting but not really worthwhile . . . Very much like most of the content from the Alt. Weekly.

    Online Promos Make Us Unique

Madmen came up with a pretty sweet promo . . . I'll never watch that lame ass show but the nifty early 60's era music is powering my morning and make ME feel special by participating in mass marketing. Which is pretty much the point on the Internets.

Additionally . . . I like this Early 60's version of TKC, when my hostility toward women would have been even funnier . . . If THEY would have let me anywhere near an office building (unlikely).

    "Kansas City Drylanders"

I recently stumbled upon an AWESOME mock-up NHL Jersey full of mistakes . . . Very much like the thinking that built the Sprint Center thinking Kansas City would get an anchor tenant.

Sitting Back For The Late Night

A few VERY interesting things to work on for the morning . . . But tonight I'm taking it easy and "enjoying myself" with a gallery of recent Jessica Burciaga photos. This unseasonably cool weather has me thinking that I should relax more and simply enjoy the scenery . . . But since my scenery includes mostly the 4 wall of this dank basement maybe I'm okay getting riled up from time to time . . . I think what I really need is a nap. Hopefully more posts on the way . . . Stay tuned.

    Kansas City's Classy P&L District!!!

I dislike leaving my mom's basement but every now and then I'm forced to go out with friends.

Last week I was outside of the P&L District and I had the luxury of stepping over these two attractive Kansas City women sprawled out on the sidewalk. I snapped a photo of the pair who had just exited the "Live Block" of their own accord but were too blitzed to make it to their car. Look closely at the photo and you can see evidence that a very kind downtown custodian just handed the lady on the right a cup of water and had previously thrown sand on her vomit that he was soon to clean up. I'm pretty sure she had some mild form of alcohol poisoning and I'm surprised anyone served her at all.

So there it is . . . The P&L District is Kansas City's new high-end destination with a dress code and policy that often keeps people of color away so that a more privileged and desired demographic can puke all over downtown streets. And TKC has provided an EXCLUSIVE look at the result of downtown partying.

Also . . . Just because I care . . . I want to remind folks that it's not safe to be this drunk in public and while I don't think anyone deserves to be the victim of a crime . . . Unfortunately, it's a fact of life that sometimes carelessness and foolish behavior invite trouble.

Kansas City (Wisely) Caves to Phelps Fam!!!

Kansas City Law and Politics provides a great deal of insight into upcoming City Council deliberations: "The City Council's Public and Neighborhoods Committee is scheduled to take up an ordinance repealing the city's restrictions on picketing activities at funerals."

For those who don't want Phelps destroying free speech as well as any sense of public decency . . . This isn't such a bad move.

    Kansas City, Kansas Albino Conference

I stumbled upon a press release for an upcoming conference and it looked interesting for some reason:

National Experts to Address Albino Group in KC: People with Albinism Gather to Learn and Share Experiences

Kansas City, Kan. July 28, 2009 -- Nationally and locally recognized speakers will be featured at the Kansas City NOAH Mini Conference, August 8, 2009 at the Kansas State School for the Blind in Kansas City, Kansas. Albinism is a rare genetic condition affecting approximately 1 out of every 17,000 people in the United States. This one-day event, sponsored by NOAH, the National Organization for Albinism and Hypopigmentation, provides parents of children with albinism and adults with the condition a rare opportunity to attend a comprehensive albinism information program close to home.
Even more interesting to me is the fact that Albinos are consistently and unfairly portrayed as evil in movies which is completely unfair and wrong and might explain why I'm going to be hiding under my bed at the thought of a local Albino gathering.

Again, that's not fair . . . One of my favorite actresses is an albino . . . I think

Recent pics of Julianne Moore in a bikini should make us a lot more tolerant of pale people . . . Or something. And I'm sure there's a more PC term than albino . . . I'll go check.

Motorcycles Up For Grabs In The Metro

KCTV5 reports one more danger for local motorcycle enthusiasts, other than serious head trauma of course:

Motorcycle Thefts On Rise In KC Metro . . . Investigators From Across Metro Teaming Up.
And while any local thievery is lamentable . . . Once again this trend demonstrates that biker culture is now firmly rooted in the suburbs and nobody is afraid to steal from those people. History tells us that long ago, bikers were feared and stealing from them was dangerous for all of those who couldn't save themselves by way of that reenacting that one scene from the Pee-Wee Hearman movie.

KCTV5 REPORTS ON LADY DRAMA AND POLICE PROTECTION AT THE HOME OF KCPD CHIEF CORWIN!!!

A KCTV5 investigation turns up some tasty details on Kansas City's Top Cop.

THERE'S REPORTING OF AN ALLEGED CATFIGHT "INCIDENT" AT KCPD CHIEF CORWIN'S HOUSE WHICH REQUIRED POLICE PROTECTION DESPITE THE FACT THAT NOBODY WILL CONFIRM ANYTHING HAPPENED!!!

Here's the most important part of the piece buried in the middle by timid reporters:

From June 15 to June 19 on-duty officers were stationed outside of Corwin’s private home in the Northland. KCTV5 saw officers there at various hours of the day and night. This occurred while the chief was in Australia attending an FBI training conference.

"All I know is we had a situation, and we used our resources in a way we thought would handle the situation," Lockhart said.

The situation developed the weekend before the surveillance began when police said they were called to the home in response to an altercation between Corwin's ex-wife and his girlfriend.

But ex-wife, Glenda Corwin, tells KCTV5 there was no altercation.

And while, police confirm several officers and supervisors responded to the chief's house, they said no incident reports were ever taken or filed.
Ordinarily I would note that any potential lady drama would disqualify a politico from seeking higher office . . . However, let's not forget that he's competing with Mayor Funky's train wreck. As for the premise of KCTV5's coverage . . . That the Chief was getting undue police protection . . . Even a cursory viewing of the Maury Povich show will confirm that any dude with an ex-wife and a girlfriend who occasionally run into each other needs a bit of help sometimes.

And when compared to our Mayor who is getting "beaten unmerciful" by his wife . . . The Chief did the right thing to allegedly call the cops on one of these ladies.

TKC EXCLUSIVE!!! MINUS THE MAYOR: JOE MILLER IS A JOURNALIST AGAIN!!!

Kansas City is moving on without Mayor Funkhouser and I have a great EXCLUSIVE example.

FORMER MAYOR FUNKY COMMUNICATIONS DUDE JOE MILLER WILL SOON BE WORKING AGAIN AS A JOURNALIST IN KANSAS CITY!!!

Even better . . . It's an Internet publication from which he'll be getting paid . . . And that pretty much puts him at the pinnacle of Kansas City Internet denizens.

The upcoming website will be kcdowntowner.com which is still under construction. Miller will be covering politics/government/social issues of interest to people who live/work/play downtown. Obviously, the site is downtown focused and it's the property of some yet-to-be-named big money player looking to promote downtown life.

More importantly . . . This signifies two facts coming to light in Kansas City . . .

  • It is possible to move on without the Mayor's hot mess of a relationship making a joke of nearly everything in town.

  • The future for newsies is online.

  • I'm looking forward to Miller's contribution to the local discourse. His work has always had a great impact on life in this town and it's good to see even more competition in Kansas City reporting and more content related to this cowtown.

St. Joe Wants To Steal KC High Rollers

St. Joesph, Missouri is tired of losing money to Kansas City so they're playing up their low crime and amenities in order to convince people to stay away from Kansas City.

The number of high-earning workers with families who work in St. Joseph but live in the Kansas City area is disproportionate compared to similar-sized cities.

And the St. Joseph Area Chamber of Commerce is making a concerted effort to get those workers to live, work and play here.

On Monday, the chamber launched a promotional magazine that expounds on the vitality of St. Joseph and its neighborhoods. The magazine cites low crime, a quality education system and sporting and shopping proximity in and near St. Joseph.
So, in a very real sense Kansas City's continual fail is being used against this town in ways that could easily have a horribly destructive impact.

    Bygone Chiefs Glory

The good people at Arrowhead Pride are celebrating a video featuring Joe Montana's days in Kansas City.

The clips are nice but I make it policy never to reminisce too much and like most 30-something guys the dudes in the comments seem to long for the 90's way too much.

    STREETCAR SUPREMACY AGAIN

The light rail d-bags are chatting to each other again . . . Here's their latest bad idea:

"The case for a downtown streetcar"

That's cute and I didn't read the whole thing but if it's anything like the failed light rail plan that Kansas City overwhelmingly rejected then it's completely unworkable and nothing but middle-class amateur urban planner folly.

    Here's the better question:

AFTER HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS THROWN AWAY ON DOWNTOWN WITH ONLY MASSIVE DEBT TO SHOW FOR IT . . . WHY NOT INVEST IN OTHER PARTS OF KANSAS CITY?

    To wit . . .

THERE IS A BETTER CASE FOR PUTTING STREET CARS ON PROSPECT WHERE THEY WOULD REALLY SPARK ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT!!!

My idea won't ever come to fruition because this town is trapped in a backward mindset that keeps communities divided by income levels and race . . . But the fact remains that throwing good money after bad downtown has failed to create the Renaissance we were promised . . . So maybe it's time to try something new.

Don't Ask, Don't Tell The Star about issues important to the LGBT community

One Kickass reader from the LGBT Community notices today that there's virtually no coverage of the recent Freedom to Serve Panel at the Truman Library

There was a young reporter for the Independence Examiner there yesterday and he filed a story. Makes you wonder about the Star and their lack of local reporters if the Examiner could cover this, but not the City's newspaper of record?
Another person attending the event wrote in . . .
The KC Star gave advance coverage of this event, but that was easy. Advance coverage is often just taken from the group's press releases - no actual reporting was done. When reporting was needed yesterday at the actual event, they were AWOL. I didn't see anyone that looked like they were from the Star, but even if someone was there, they didn't file a story. The Star spends more time on "StarGazing", Jenee, and FYI stories than they do on news reporting. Half or more of the front section is all Associated Press stories anyway. And the excellent Op/Ed piece they ran over the weekend on this event was written by a guest columnist, Harry Truman's grandson!
Both good points and further evidence that as The Star implodes there are several communities they are failing on their way out of biz.

TKC Blog Spotlight!!! While I'm beloved by all races and ethnic groups in KC, I notice it's only white people who really hate me.

Yesterday Logtar wrote a great blog post about a recent local blogosphere controversy i.e. TKC daring to question middle-class white people.

Logtar's post is much too thoughtful and intelligent for this dump. However, I noticed in the comments that some anony coward called Nick is bragging that he never links TKC . . . As if I needed link from his blog that he can only convince a dozen of his friends to read by constantly going out to lunch with them, commenting on their blogs and, of course, talking trash about TKC.

The premise of this blogger's argument is faulty as well . . . I read his blog sometimes, it doesn't bother me to note as much because only people who don't understand how the Internet works worry about referencing their subject matter.

A search of his blog will confirm that, this coward called Nick who as threatened physical violence against TKC has:

  • Given me a nickname.

  • Written about TKC on more than 3 different occasions in the past 3 months.

  • Spammed his links in my comment section.

  • And even showed up to an event to watch me speak.

  • Like it or not . . . I own a share of mind in Nick's head. I don't need his links. Having him think about TKC when it comes to local blogging is much better. Sorry.

So . . . Back to Logtar's eloquent words. I wouldn't dare challenge him but I do want to put to rest a horrible myth which claims that "underneath it all" TKC is a nice guy. Nothing could be further from reality.

The fact is, TKC is horrible and I couldn't care less about the feelings of any public figure, blogger, politico or small animal. And my favorite activity is showing and proving that middle and upper-class white people are wrong.

Finally . . . Social Penetration Theory (hehe) has an important place in this whole blogging/social media thing because it's based on "examining the dynamics of relational closeness that occurs through a gradual process of self-disclosure" which is pretty much what reading a good blog is all about . . . Learning about someone without actually having to spend real time with them. A tenant of this theory uses the onion metaphor which describes the different layers of personality. With rare exceptions (Logtar, Leigh Ann and maybe a few more of "the good ones") I'm fairly certain that this onion analogy holds up quite well because after tearing away so many layers of local bloggers, Tweeters and other online denizens I'm finally beginning to see that in the vast majority of cases at the center of it all there's simply nothing there . . . In other words, for awhile I allowed the local blogger clique a pass on their tacit bigotry and poseurism but since there are now so many new blogs and networks arising and it's obvious they have bottomed out, there's no need to cut them a break because my silence regarding their stupidity only encourages these half dozen jerks who are only comfortable with minorities as mascots and tokens and can't stand when a person of color brings more to the table than they do . . . Which is obviously the case in this bloggy situation.

WyCo Squeezes Residents Over Bad Budget

WDAF: WyCo Considers Raising Utility Fee To Cover Deficit . . . Very much like KC, one more local municipality learns how to essentially raise taxes on residents using different terminology. See: Red Light Cameras.

    Water Worries in Sugar Creek

Not a really important link from The Examiner but, at the risk of seeming like a conspiracy nut, it's an interesting look at local government essentially in control over a basic element of life: "It may soon be illegal for Sugar Creek residents to reside in a home within the city limits without access to city water."

Kansas City Board of Trade Is Broke Too

Bev Chapman files a nice report on the KCBT with the somewhat surprising revelation that the movers and shakers in the commodities trade are counting on the Obama Stimulus and similar bailout measures.

Crazy Letters Sent By Tiller Killer

The Star reports that Scott Roeder's letters offer "a portrait of a man whose religious, political and anti-abortion views were becoming more extreme — insisting, for example, that Jesus be called “Yahshua” and that Christmas shouldn’t be celebrated. The income tax is ungodly, Roeder instructs, and in a letter on his son’s 13th birthday, Roeder defends his failure to pay child support."

So, for better or worse, the letters of the Tiller Killer merely read like a talk radio script . . . And that shouldn't be frightening at all.
