Show Me People Who Don't Know Much About Kansas City's Budget!!!

Missouri petitions are circulating against the E-tax. Sentiments against the E-tax are usually well-received, aggressive and have no idea that a significant portion of Kansas City's budget comes from the e-tax . . . In reality, politicos are closer to raising the e-tax (and have ramped up collection) so this kind of reactionary move should be put in perspective.

It's simple really . . . Eliminating the E-tax is "Ron Paul" talk that makes for great radio but doesn't really have anything to do with the real world or the political mainstream. Cutting cops, trash pickup, the few snow plows that work in Kansas City along with every other service just isn't in the cards and only makes sense to somebody who doesn't know anything about this town's finances but would love to speculate about theoretical benefits without a hint at how to cover immediate gaps the loss would bring without some sort of lame 3rd rate joke vaugely aimed at women or minorities.

They should put a picture of Kim Carlos standing on a snow covered street on the posters promoting the petition drive.

Make sure that there are wads of cash falling out of Kim Carlos's coat pockets for the picture.

If the local Council Stooges ram through a tax increase, even Beth, Jan, Cindy and the Funk won't survive. The Citizens are already getting taxed into oblivion and receive almost nothing in return.

Oh I left out the powerful Deb... and yes, even she would get swept away.

Long Live the Orange Revolution, the Orange Revolution is dead!

City's E-Tax is capped at 1% by State Law. City Council does not have the power to increase the E-Tax unless the State Legislature changes the law first.

Don't be surprised to see it cut or eliminated. The legislature is controled by the GOP and most of the tax is paid by folks not living in the city.

Philadelphia had to cut the earnings tax for non-residents lower than for residents to keep the Pennsylvania legislature from abolishing it.

If it got repealed, can anyone say "bankruptcy"?

I think you'll find that a great many folks who pay the E-Tax, but don't live in the city used to live in the city and that after years and years of hoping that the best was yet to come, got sick of waiting for a turnaround and got the hell out of K.C.

They're also sick of giving the city money that goes to waste year after year with no benefit at all to them.

There was a time when the city didn't have this tax and it wasn't that long ago. They said your life would improve greatly with it's inception.

City government here has no perception of what it means to be a good steward of taxpayer money. They waste tax money day after day and year after year and never even give any thought of where the money comes from and that the money train might dry up someday.

I still find it hard to believe that Funk is an accountant.

Btw, where is Funk?

The whole reason the city is so dependent on this income is because KCMO hasn't grown any population over the past 50 years. 75% of the metro lives outside of KCMO and doesn't want to pay the tax so they don't. It's not surprising people and jobs moved out of the city.

There's a lot of things they could do as the e-tax is phased out. They could increase the gas tax because Missouri's gas tax is already cheaper than Kansas' tax. There's other taxes and user fees. People would gradually come back to KC again.
