CITY COUNCIL BETRAYS LGBT COMMUNITY!!! KANSAS CITY FUNDS HATE SPEECH!!! WAVED THE RULES TO FLIP-FLOP!!!

The Life Changers ordeal was one of the ugliest votes I've ever witnessed . . . Here are the details . . .

The question for funding for Life Changers was held till the end of the legislative session . . . Here's how it started:

Councilman Sharp moved to bend the rules in the way they are normally bent in order to fund Life Changers after the fact . . .

Marcason rescued herself . . .

Ford withdrew himself from the vote . . .

Curls abstained . . .

Marcason abstained . . .

Cindy Circo didn't know what to vote on . . . But then voted yes . . . I mean "aye"

The motion failed to amend the ordinance . . . At first.

Then they moved to try to get rid of all of their conflict for agencies which City Council folk belonged to . . .

What was really obvious is that nobody has an idea what they're doing legislatively and EVERYONE was giggling through the process.

Sharp moved to amend the ordinance again . . . This time so Council folk could vote without conflict.

That amendment passed. 10-1.

Then Council Lady Gottstein wanted Life Changers funding taken out to vote on at another time.

Councilman Sharp pushed hard for to fund Life Changers because of all the secular programs the conference offered. "It's a simple $5,000 grant."

Councilman Riley argued for Life Changers Funding as well . . . But noted that "he detests racially hostile or motivated speech." Which didn't really make sense because nobody was talking race. He had to be reminded and prodded as to what exactly he was voting for . . .

Only Council Lady Gottstein gave her requisite respect to Bishop Tolbert but begged for Life Changers funding to be part of a separate vote.

7-4 Gottstein's motion failed.

They called for a vote on the ordinance with Life Changers Funding intact . . .

In one of the most frightening displays of incompetence I've ever seen all of the Council had to tell Melba how to vote. John Sharp was in charge of the Council today coaching all Curls and Sanders Brooks.

The Ordinance passed 8-3 . . . It was classic Kansas City horse trading in action.

What does this mean?

THE MAJORITY OF THE CITY COUNCIL AND THE MAYOR SUPPORTED HATE SPEECH AGAINST THE LGBT COMMUNITY!!!

Now there's a precedent for funding any hate group with political connections . . .

Even worse . . .

CITY COUNCIL AND THE MAYOR CAN CHANGE CITY RULES (I.E LAWS) AT THEIR WHIM!!!

THE COUNCIL FLIP-FLOPPED ON PROMISES TO TAKE OUT FUNDING . . . OBVIOUSLY THEY CAN'T BE TRUSTED TO KEEP THEIR WORD!!!

Sadly . . .

Under pressure the Council will twist and turn . . . But ultimately chose to do the more politically expedient thing.

On the bright side . . . It was nice to see Gottstein stand by her LGBT constituency . . .

Life Changers gets their 5k to promote hate speech . . . Life goes on . . .

Mammy gate was just milk money compared to what this will cost the city. Even if they should win, the legal expenses will be enormous.

If you check with the folks who sponsored the event in corporate KC, you'll find they were very unhappy with what their money purchased. But their white guilt was sated for awhile.

    4. No surprises in the Council's decision to fund gay-haters, racists, or puppy killers. The KC City Council is the absolute most disfunctional entity in the entire world. The actual surprise is the fact anyone was able to stay awake until the end of the legislative session. Now that--is a miracle!!

    5. Good coverage T. but you aren't stupid enough to believe that the Black Ministers weren't going to get their money one way or another?

    7. John Sharp is repulsive. And the way he ordered Melba and Sharon to vote his way was disgusting. Melba's cluelessness was unbelievable...what planet is she from? Glorioso was probably telling Jolly how to vote. Beth was the only one with any guts. Now not only is hate speech sanctioned by the city, it's subsidized! And it's now ok to change NTDF rules to help out your "pals"...why have rules if no one is to follow them?

      ReplyDelete
    8. All I hope is that aliens who might be observing our planet aren't watching Channel 2 during legislative sessions...they'd probably decide to destroy earth because it looks as though we're a waste of human life. And as far as some of our councilmembers are concerned...they'd be correct!

      ReplyDelete
    9. So the black Ministers can extort money, after the fact, to pick up a paltry $5,000 to make up for the funding for an unsuccessful event.

Cheap, gutless politics all the way around.

      ReplyDelete
    10. To quote John Sharp (with the "spotty record"), "It's only $5,000." I guess you can break rules and fund hate speech if the price is right. Wonder how much the council "yes" votes cost?

      ReplyDelete
    11. Thanks for reporting this Tony. I haven't seen much from The Star. Only a story from last week.

      This problem ain't going away.

      ReplyDelete
    16. Wow, what a hot mess. There is not one council member that deserves to be Mayor but I bet more than a few run.

      ReplyDelete
    17. Why is the city council funding events after they have already occurred? Why would they establish a precedent so that any Tom, Dick or Harriet can ask the City to pay for events that have already occurred?

Just think about it - if events need funding after they have occurred it means it wasn't a successful event.

So, the city is setting a precedent for funding unsucessful events after they have occured.

      Amazing.

      ReplyDelete
    18. It is the principle of the thing. Life Changers saves souls and the Queers ruin lives.

The Council did the right thing.

      ReplyDelete
    19. The Council screwed up badly and the LGBT community is not going to let them off the hook. They funded a hate-monging conference, whether $5,000 or $50,000 it doesn't matter. They're gutless idiots. Thank God for Beth Gottstein for having some courage.

      ReplyDelete
    20. That's damnn right - the council voted anti-Gay today, and just as bad, they continued the tradition of black patronage that has created the black political leadership vaccuum that has plagued the east side for decades.

      ReplyDelete
    21. Someone get a quote from Cleaver on this!

      ReplyDelete
    22. I love it when Queers lose BIG!

      ReplyDelete
    23. Wow, I think that a lot of people need to review their neighborhood events, or any event, and go back and get some money out of the council.

This gives neighborhood tourism and development funding a whole new character.

I think the council needs to defend why they don't give OTHER neighborhood and religious-affiliated and other groups the same ability to ask for funding for past events.

I think we need to plaster the council with requests, and make them defend their decision.

Or show us the money. All we have to do is threaten their re-election bids, just like the black ministers did.

      ReplyDelete
    24. I grew up during the civil rights era and remember the marches and the freedom riders and the redneck cops with their dogs and firehoses. That made a lasting impression on me and gave me tremendous sympathy for the plight of African Americans.

But not, seeing the types of bigots and hate-mongers the black community has produced, I truly regret every time I told grade school classmates "you should call them negros" and publicly stated any sort support for racial equality.

Tolbert and the other organizers of this event are just trashy niggers to me now. Fuck their bigoted black asses!

      ReplyDelete
    25. Any way you try and spin it, this action had the effect of subsidizing a religious event. 1st Amendment violation no doubt.

    32. Such a shame. Tony you were right. It was hard to watch these folks in action.

      ReplyDelete
    33. I hope this is the first step on a new path for Beth. I wanted to like her, then she seemed insane. But she sure stood up this time. If she stays THIS course and quits being crazy, she should be considered for re-election. Also, I must admit that Russ frequently appears to be a very smart nerd.

    35. Looks like the gay community really took it hard in the ass this time.
I mean in a different way, in a way that they don't like.

      ReplyDelete
    36. How many people are in the "gay community" in Kansas City. And don't give me this "10 percent of the population" nonsense. It just ain't so in Kansas City.

Beyond a few vocal lesbians and the alleged A-List crowd that runs the chorus, it can't be more than 100-150 people who give a damn about gay issues in Kansas City. The rest are in the closet or just don't care.

The council knows this and voted accordingly.

      ReplyDelete
    37. Tony...you were WRONG!!! City Council to turn down funding...so what do you do...change the old headline.

Now we know why the Kansas City Star is the Star and you blog from a basement.

      ReplyDelete
    38. Let's deal with some facts, shall we? City legal brains told Council they shouldn't fund Life Changers. Sharp & Co. wanted to deliver to Tolbert, so they skirted the rules and played a shell game to get Tolbert and his hate mongers their promised funds. Life Changers should offend anyone regardless of their sexual orientation or religious. They spew hatred.
The Council had multiple votes during a messy legislative session to accomplish this. Gottstein stood up to Tolbert, but more importantly, she stood up for the NTDF ordinance and its rules, such as funding events that have already happened. She refused to change the rules of the game in the middle, just to appease Life Changers.
Sharp "conveniently" changed that rule "just this one time" to get his buddies cash. After all, as he said, "It's only $5k." As if the amount makes what he did any less distasteful. Then he yelled across the room to tell Sanders Brooks and Curls how to vote, saying, "You're an 'aye'!" when they seemingly wavered. Then someone had to explain to Melba where she was, and someone else had to explain to Circo what was going on.
I am not LGB or T (not that there is anything wrong with that), but I do care about following the law, violating the separation of church and state and having clueless council people. I also care about having meanspirited council people (fill in the blank with as many names as you like; there are several that fit) who cater to one segment of the population in efforts to buy votes.
This might seem like a small matter, but Tony has covered it carefully and thoughtfully. What was in The Star this morning? Nuthin'.

Good job, T. Sharp... go take a long walk off a short pier. Curls and Circo...get a clue, please! And to the rest of the Council that voted for this... grow a spine, you invertebrate cowards.

      ReplyDelete
    39. Thta's exactly right, the rules and law only apply when its covenient.

      This is terrible public policy.

Is someone trying to cover up something?

Odds are there is going to be some litigation regarding how the council broke the law and disciminated in favor of one group. Are they trying to clean things up on the agenda minutes because of that expectation?

    44. Well after FIFTY messages, I didn't even slow down for the ANONYMICE... only the ones in BLUE like me who sign their names to their positions!

I'll be writing this again, because you need to hear it.

TONY TONY TONY. If you don't delete the one liner shockers who just say 'nigger' and other petty distractions, then you let them CHEAPEN your room.

I must only assume that of the 45 responses... most of the petty comments come from 2 or 3 unemployed people who are board. No, they aren't really separate hits.

HITS are good. I like em too. But not MINDLESS, ANONYMICE hits. You need to delete them. Why? Because they cheapen your blogsite.

You simply have to decide... are you going for trash or Treasure? KC's upscale power brokers aren't going to wade through the morons. They expect YOU to delete them.

that will do two things. It will tell the morons they need to put forth more effort or go away, and they will also purge your system of annoyances that more educated, mental people don't want to be bothered with.

I was so amused when you suggested that MY comments were more verbose than MOST comments. OF COURSE. I'm not into cheap shots.

Are you saying you like the ANONYMICE comments more than thoughtful ones?

Are you saying you want us to ENDURE YOUR LONG, MEANDERING TIRADES about Funkhouser and his troubles, but if WE write longer than 2 cheap shot lines, you want us to get LOST?

      Gimme a break TKC.

AS a guy whose been into computer blogging even before MS Internet Explorer's browsers (back when it was just UNIX and university systems on the REAL enternet) and when local Bulletin Boards (uh BEFORE the INTERNET in the world of DIAL UP BLOGGING) were around. That was LONG before you reached PUBERTY!)... we were talkin about Ronald Reagan who was current president!

And Ayn Rand, and ideas you had no clue about!

It's not like I'm trying to tell you I'm BETTER than you are... I'm only suggesting that you not be so arrogant at your tender age as to think you're better than ANYONE.

Fact is, I actually REMEMBER the Bobby Greenlease kidnapping and it scared the SHIT out of me, because I was a little kid and I was HIS AGE! And he lived less than 40 blocks from where I was! Yup, I remember the '51 flood. And H.Roe Bartle's fat belly, and TWA Constellations flying hourly into Municipal Airport (as opposed to the ONE that's left), and when the KC stockyards was full of cows and the Lifestock Exchange was full of Livestock Commissioners, and there were streetcars on Troost and no one equated TROOST with BLACK, and lots of things you haven't even READ about yet.

I'm suggesting you chill out a little Tony. The fact is, from MY long term perspective, I think your jones about the Funk is completely moronic. The only people who look up to you are those who don't KNOW anything about KC!

That should teach you a bit of humility in my view. And yes. I have shirts older than you are!

      ReplyDelete
    45. I reviewed what I wrote and I'm happy with what I said. I just want to make sure you realize that what I wrote wasn't to make ME feel important.

It was to make YOU feel less ARROGANT. We must all realize that we're only on this planet for about fifteen minutes.

That means we SHOULD NOT TAKE OURSELVES TOO SERIOUSLY.

That includes you, your petty AWESOME TKC CONTRIBUTORS hell bent to defame the boss down there...and EVERYTHING ELSE YOU SAY!

Most of your crap never turns into anything. So what that you get a fifteen minute advance notice on something that will still end up in the morning paper? If not today, then tomorrow?

Is beating the Star by a day or two what thrills you?

      Sigh.

    46. STFU Radioman. Quit wasting everybody's time with your overly long posts. No one cares what you have to say, and you're just crowding other, shorter comments out.

      ReplyDelete
    47. Huh? What? Did Radioman say something?

Oh wait. I remember. I started to read it and promptly fell asleep when I realized what a (yawn) hypocrite he was being.

Odd how he can get all bent out of shape over the word "nigger," but I never seen him complain about the posts that use words like "faggot," "fudge-packer," "cocksucker," etc., etc.

I can't decide whether that's just his particular bias or if he says anything about the anti-gay hate speech someone might think he doth protest too much.
