It looks like all of dead tree media is going the way of the dinosaur by following the example of the Kansas City Star.
First . . . Newspapers (think) they're getting slick by using SEO techniques along with other so-called web savvy advertising tricks and they're driving people away from their sites. Check it:
According to data from Nielsen Online, readers are spending less time on top newspaper websites, including six minutes less per month at Washingtonpost.com, one minute less per month at USAToday.com and a minute and a half less per month at NYTimes.com.Sorry but Google Ads will not save Journalism . . . The same goes for the intrusive flash pop-up route that makes enduring The Star's content offerings even more heartbreaking online.
Even worse . . . Constructing a big stupid printing facility (like The Star did) is just another way for newspapers to build their own coffin.
For other important daily papers the pattern is clear . . . The Star leads the way into the demise of the daily newspaper. Their decisions seem to be the cornerstone of print media failure.
A few more KC Star strategies that will ultimately bring about their destruction:
No . . . From what I've seen The Star is striving to position itself as the arbiter of news in Kansas City and in a digital world where content can come from everywhere that puts the so-called paper-of-record at a distinct disadvantage and in opposition to the way that media consumption is changing and involving the populace not simply publishing to them.
Constructing a big stupid printing facility (like The Star did) is just another way for newspapers to build their own coffin.

That's really a funny line Santino... sort of like fat people digging their own graves with their spoons :)
Is Tony really that fat? I thought it was just part of the schtick. He better be careful, a lot of Mexicans get The Sugar (Diabetes).
ReplyDeleteouchy
ReplyDeleteWhat is dooming/doomed the Star is their leftist agenda in their "reporting". KC is, for the most part, a right of center city and to flatly refuse to report fairly, or rather bias the reporting to a leftist view, the Star as alienated 50+% of their readership.
ReplyDeleteDo I want them to fail?? No but if they keep with their leftist agenda - then yes I hope they do fail.
oh, they're clearly failing, which is why why they're hiring.
ReplyDeleteI can't stand the KC rag. The latest with Henrichs and Whitlock were the final straw. What little I read takes less than 5 min on their website. And they pick and choose what stories are allowed comments.
ReplyDeleteUm, that doesn't really count douchebag because Sprint picks up the tab for the job and then the reporter gets a better gig with another failing company:

Read the Internet, it'll keep you much better informed than the paper.

ReplyDeleteYeah, right. Except not. What nonsense. Statistics show otherwise.
What's killing the Star:
1) a transfer, purely and simply, to the 'net. It's faster, it's more immediate, it's "now", etc., etc.
2) It's now really lame. It's so brief it can't cover the news. It's a shadow of it's former self.
3) It's website is painful and painful to try to use. Go to a paper copy of the Star, get a headline, then go back online, type in that same headline and see what comes up. I'll save you the time--nothing. Nothing will come up. It's own headlines don't come up on it's own search online. It's stupid. Also, like this weekend, when we were all pissed off about the rich Mission Hills brat who got off w/ a short stay in jail for destroying another human being's body while driving drunk and REALLY FAST on Ward Parkway and the Star disallowed comments on their article? The Star makes itself irrelevant. Every day. And does the site look like the paper? Hell no. As a medium that wants to be relevant, The Star just keeps making itself more irrelevant but begs us to stick around. It's like a really, really bad relationship and the other person is dysfunctional.

ReplyDeleteYeah, that's why KC keeps voting for the Democrat in virtually every election. [rolls eyes]
Wow, Pflow is by far the smartest person to ever sink into the TKC cesspool. seriously, if people start leaving intelligent comments here, tony might start thinking he's not a joke
ReplyDeleteThey also treat the carriers like crap. The have over 200 carriers at a distrubition center on the kansas side. Plus they get the paper there late. So you have over 200 carriers trying to get the paper, bag it, and deliver it by 5:30 in the morning. Same problem on the Missouri side. The paper is not that big to get it there late. SO WTF???
ReplyDelete-. Constructing a big stupid printing facility (like The Star did) is just another way for newspapers to build their own coffin.-
ReplyDeleteUm, those presses do print other things, for other clients. They don't just sit there the other 22 hours in the day.
Rise up crack will undoubtedly follow.

ReplyDeleteKansas City metro is right of center. You have people on the Missouri side wanting hands out and graft vs those of us in Kansas (WYCO notwithstanding), who vote to the right.
I don't have the statistics in front of me, but I don't think Clay and Platte Counties in Missouri and Johnson County in Kansas are hotbeds for the Democratic party. I would bet that's where most of the Star's subscribers come from. The demographics of Kansas City south of the river don't lend themselves to newspaper subscribers outside of a njavascript:void(0)arrow strip between State Line and Troost from maybe 39th Street south to 435.
ReplyDelete9:46 is right: the Star's leftist agenda and its arrogance have contributed to its downhill slide.
,What is dooming/doomed the Star is their leftist agenda in their "reporting"
ReplyDeleteOnce again, this kind of comment is more at home at McClatchy Watch. They love this kind of stuff.
"You have people on the Missouri side wanting hands out and graft vs those of us in Kansas (WYCO notwithstanding), who vote to the right."
ReplyDeleteDoesn't KS have a Democraft governor? Didn't JoCo re-elect Dennis Moore, a Democrat?
The metro area must be slightly LEFT of center if the Republican areas are electing Democrats.
the star seems to be positioning themselves for life after a daily paper. they're getting new commercial jobs at a very fast pace. they pretty much print every pitch style rag for a 300 mile radius at the press pavilion. they just picked up a huge commercial account from price chopper. spanish language rags? the seem to be doing that as well. even ink magazine is making money way above expectations. go figure. must the pros who run it.
ReplyDeletei did some googlin' and found this site that some guy who i guess might work at the star has of the inside of the press hall. interesting pics of the presses and the building.
http://www.newpressroom.com/
btw tony, you failed to mention that the press pavilion was built and paid for by knight-ridder and when you look at the financials of the sale to mcclatchy, it seems that mcclatchy just about got the whole production building and it's contents for free.
it must really suck for you to do a little research. which really doesn't even come into the equation when you have that blogger fire burning in you.
once again tony, you suck.
notice to Anon 12:58
ReplyDeletethey treat carriers like shit?
wake the fuck up. they treat every one they come in contact with like shit, especially their contract workers and employees.
dumbass!
a shitty paper for a shithole cowtown.
