NBC Action News: Kansas City, Mo. leaders are tracking down people who fail to pay their earnings tax because they need the money to help with a multi-million dollar budget shortfall.
In a sense this is leadership by example considering that Kansas City's finances are every bit as screwed up as Mayor Funky's mortgage.

"Tracking down people who failed to pay their earnings taxes" means harrassing anyone who moved from KC in the last ten years. The city sends out threatening letters and in some cases sues in court even if the taxpayer didn't live in KC for the years in question.
ReplyDeleteExcellent point.
ReplyDeleteAs long as the city is collecting money owed, there is another $1 million left on the table.
ReplyDeleteAbout a year ago it was widely reported several times that Staley Farms subdivision had used $1 million in unmetered and unbilled water for their golf course. And also, criminal charges were likely. So, now one year later, is their water use now being billed? Why have no charges been filed? And why not have the residents that got the free water not repaid the city $1 million? Inquiring TKC readers want to know.
Funny Stuff.
ReplyDeleteThe year after I moved out of K.C. to Gladstone, K.C. sent me paperwork to get me to pay the earnings tax. I do work in K.C. and my employer takes out 1% and gives it to them. So why do I have to file anything? Included in the papers was a login and temp password to access my "Account" online. I went online, changed my password and looked up my info. My info was correct except the city. Probably due to the all knowing zip code logarithm that everyone uses in their billing programs. Half of the bills I get in the mail list my house as being in K.C. because of my zip code.
Anyway...I was able to access my account info and it let me change my city of residence. So I did. The next week I called the city to ask why I was getting this paper work from them. She looked my info up and came back on the line and told me that it had been a mistake, because their database had me living in Gladstone, not K.C.
I thought that it was real cool of them to let me change my info in their database.
I have a full-time job in Kansas and live in Kansas. I also have a part-time job in the City of Kansas City, MO and my part-time employer deducts 1% of my earnings and gives it to KCMO. I'm just waiting for them to claim that I owe them 1% of my total earnings. Clowns.
