No love for Funk at lunch

Here's a quick e-mail blast I received just a couple of minutes ago reporting a lonely lunch for the Co-Mayor . . .
Did you hear about the debacle today at downtowners? The mayor showed up at the luncheon as the Recall group was getting signatures outside.

Very, very uncomfortable for all 130+ attendees.

Then when the mayor was introduced, no one clapped. I mean no one. Then they announced Kay Barnes and thanked her for attending and everyone clapped.

Funk just sat there. They introduced all the “political” people there and everyone of them got an applause except funk.

It continued on with Mike Sanders talking for 30 min about the County and how they are working with the City on reducing budgets. He did a very good job.

He mentioned Barnes about 15 times, different councilmember’s by name 6-7 times (even ones not there) thanking them and commending the entire City Council for all the hard work and working together. And never once mentioned funkhouser or the mayor’s office..

It was so obvious afterward that funk just left without talking to anyone. All anyone could talk about was the fact that no one mentioned or talked to the mayor.

Never in any setting has one person been so ostracized.
And even more bad news for Mayor Funky . . . The folks at recallfunk.com/Mammygate.com have teamed up with other anti-Funk signature gatherers.

  1. I was at the lunch, and to myself and my 3 friends it was all we could talk about in the car drive back to the office. For a sitting mayor to receive NO applause, and for the former mayor and councilmembers to get a warm reception is just jaw-dropping to me. Your last point about the speaker is also dead-on. He waxed on for a good 30 minutes about all of the great things going on in town, and never once spoke about the mayor. All of this with someone from the recall effort collecting signatures out front, which I saw she had at least 2--25 from the afternoon.

  2. Of course the downtowners group is naturally not Funk's biggest fan base. He might have gotten a warmer reception from the Brooksiders who elected him thinking he'd fix their potholes.

The man always walks around hunchbacked and looking lonely. That must be why he clings to Gloria. He's got some major social baggage in his background to make him such a loner.

  3. The fact that he has marginalized himself so much makes him incapable of having a positive effect on this city. He should be gracious and step down. It might preserve what little respect he has left in this metropolitan area.

  4. I was there as well, with another co-worker. The luch was great and Sanders did a great job pumping up the crowd about KC and all the positive things that are going on. Hopefully Funk took some notes on what it's like to be a leader.

  5. So what you're saying is, the signature gatherers go to the WORST POSSIBLE PLACE to gather signatures.

    Oh, that's really smart.

  6. REALLY..
What are you doing to change things smart ass. At least these guys are trying to make a difference. What have you ever done in your life to try and change anything??????
It's just like with voting, you don't vote, you dont get to bitch about how bad things are.
Be a man, (or woman) get off your ass and do something to help or make a difference. Then you can voice your "smart" thoughts.

  10. Mike Sanders is the f-in man. Anyone think he may run for mayor?

  11. Sanders lives in Independence. It would be a little problematic for himto run as mayor of Kansas City.

  12. This, Tony, was the most impressive adn eye opening story on the mayor I've seen on your blog.

No yelling with cap letters, no changing fonts to highlight your bullshit. Every sentence was a smartbomb. A think piece.

My god, that guy really IS in deep doodoo. If this gathers more steam that just the usual demagogue and longtime enemies throwing shit to see if it'll stick, the guy may well want to consider that he's committed political suicide.

And it just might be time to pack himself up in Hearne's wooden coffin and leave the building before he stinks the place up. He ain't Bill Clinton... he can't face a recall with 60 percent approval rating!

Just goes to show ya that left brained, anal retentive accounting types really need to stay in the accounting department where they do the most good. They just don't have the skills for leadership.

  13. Beth for Mayor!

  14. Radioman:
Funk is NOT an accountant. He's an "auditor" and not a financial CPA type auditor. I doubt Funk has even so much as taken an accounting class. Did you notice what a terrible time he had just keeping a campaign account in line?

Please do not insult accountants by calling Funk an "accounting type". He is a "public administration" type which means he can run forever on bullshit as long as all he's asked to do is count things and point out shortfalls. If asked to do any real thinking he's lost.
