Bannister Mall Before Demolition

A dude from the KC Rag forum posted some great photos from inside Bannister Mall.

The place looks haunting, depressing and dangerous.

The only thing scarier than this amazing set of urban exploring photos is that Kansas City is going to provide A HUGE SUPER-TIF DURING A GLOBAL FINANCIAL CRISIS in a scheme to redevelop the area on behalf of a soccer team with one of the lowest attendance records in the league.

  1. Don;t you think it would be samrt to drop the soccer complex before we go more into more TIF payments that a complex won't pay for. Looks at the Chiefs and the Royal 30 years at the Stadium and keep all the profits and they still needed help to build the stadium, The soccer stadium will do the same. More basic services will be gone, less fire, police,EMT and street repairs. Didn't the Mayor say he would make some decisions to say NO?

  2. I was always disappointed about the Mayor's decision on this item. His argument that he saved money on a SuperTIF was spurious at best.

  3. Again, someone point me to the money that the city is losing here? A) The city isn't backing the bonds, the developer is. B) The area in question is providing minimal income currently, which will probably be offset by the 1% earnings tax on the construction jobs created.

Face it, all 12 on the council and the Mayor are on board with this - one of the few things they apparently agree on. Its a good thing...

But why do I waste my time anyways? You're not going to change your mind, even when/if the thing becomes a success.

I can even understand the hate on soccer and whatnot - ok, you don't like it, that's fine with me... but if you don't think that this area needs redevelopment then you're simply delusional. You probably also think that the P&L district is an abject failure too.
