TKC EXCLUSIVE!!! Opponents of Light Rail take Kansas City Mayor at his word!!!

Kansas City's Mayor Mark Funkhouser always likes to brag about his principles but yet again he has been caught flip-flopping on his word . . . Which is pretty much worthless at this point anyway.
I like the message of this billboard that's being put up today in Kansas City by the Committee for Sensible Transit . . . It simply offers a quote from one of Kansas City's Co-Mayors that was made not too long ago . . .
The KC Tribune has a great article about the effort that goes into a lot more detail than what The Star is providing . . .
Additionally . . . I'm starting to see these anti-light rail signs all over town now . . . It's a good sign that this pricey plan won't sneak in under the radar during a presidential election AND that the people of Kansas City are holding Mayor Funky accountable for all of his silly PR statements while pointing out that his "principles" so often change from one day to the next.

Wrong way Funk-ee
whatevs.
The Star has article this morning "Federal Funds For Light Rail Are Not Certain". No quotes from opponents, but lots of sidestepping from ATA and proponents. The Star turns to a California based promoter of light rail for a quote and to local supporters. Typical Star bias reporting. At least the problem with funding is raised. So many other questions unanswered.
Johnson is now noting that the route may have to be down streets were the cost isn't as high. So evidetly we do not yet know the exact route.
Question: Where will this billion dollar fully funded by kansas city tax payers run? What's the route, Rus? You now want planner stations to safe cost and keep in budget. Does that mean you were being extravigant with imaginary tax dollars? Come on Rus and Mark, tell us the truth.
Funk will only stick to his guns for Gloria.
Mrs. Funkhouser said the Mayor only got 80 emails on the volunterr ordinance and 80% of them were favorable. How fun would it be to see Tony make a Sunshine Act request for the 80 emails and post them?
I will vote for this plan even though I find it incomplete. I want light rail in Kansas City. It is worth the effort to get mass transit in KC. Our dependence on oil is outrageous.
As for whether or not funk-ee supports the plan.... who gives a damn what the bastard thinks?
IF light rail won't get you to and from work, vote against it.
Rail lines works for urban cities but KC isn't an urban city. it's a SUBURBAN city. This isn't New York where the subway is terrific. If we wanted light rail, we should put it along College Blvd, and spread it towards Lee's Summit...but don't you see, if we don't have a well planned feeder system and the whole thing is very commuter fast, it's just not workable. It won't get you to where you need to go! It'd just be a tourist venue.
If you can't sell your car, it's just a waste of money.
This is continued insanity. Like for most people, buying a treadmill they don't use.
It's official: every superficial conversation in Kansas CIty must include the phrase "I just feel so bad for Tony Gonzalez."
Followed by much sighing and earnest shaking of heads in favor.
Yeah, a real victim. He gets to get some sweet poontang every night while you punch a timecard a slog away at a job you hate and a vanishing 401Kthat will cause you to eat cat food in your retirement.
thin margin... we have mass transit in Kansas City. Or haven't you noticed the bus system?
Yeah, but buses aren't fun, new and progressive like trains are.
Portland Oregon has light rail. Now that's a cool city.
I just want Kansas City to be hip, and we'll never get there by riding the bus.
Where can I get a yard sign opposing light rail?
could not agree more. the construction of the light-rail system will probably be the final nail in the coffin of a "resurgent" Downtown. what's left of business Downtown will move to 119th st to be close to their employees, NOT the other way around.
"Where can I get a yard sign opposing light rail?" - 10/06/2008 11:11:00 AM
COUNT ME IN - Tony, I've done some searches, not coming up with anything. I never do yard signs - but for this one, I'd make an exception.
Let us not worry about the exact route through midtown. We have a chance for light rail in this area. There are some parts of the city that will not ever have it---not even close.
Lets show are gratitude and not attack this plan just because we don't know how much it will cost or where it will go. Remember there are those areas of the city not as fortunate as ours. Contain your skepticism. Silence is a virtue. I wish the mayor had never said what he said.
"Lets ... not attack this plan just because we don't know how much it will cost or where it will go."
WHO THE FUCK ARE YOU, SOMEONE ON THE CITY COUNCIL? the same fucks who stole the money we VOTERS okayed for EDUCATION by agreeing to casinos that float?
yeah, i'd trust our city council with a billion bucks for pie in the sky.
Hey you guys are really out of it. There are thousands of people with in ten blocks of each side of Main Street. A brisk walk to the Light Rail will wake you up in the morning and then you can ride to work on the train.
Sell you cars this deal is done and it is the best deal that Kansas city has had in years.
thin margin... are you a liberal or just plain clueless. You can't eat progressive and fun. As to new, new buses are being purchased all the time. We live in perilous financial times (this puts aside the city record pace of murders) and we have political leaders who can't pass a balanced budget, took away 20 promised cops which were previously funded with sales tax dollars and just about the only thing they can do is give themselves pay raises (which they did). In which credit market do you think the City of Kansas City will be able to get the funds necessary to pay for this boondoggle? And who would lend Mayor Smart With Nothinghouser 5 cents? This whole thing is an embarrassment... it should never even been brought up to a vote. Because of such inept and clueless political leadership, the regualar tax paying citizen is going to have to hope that the people who vote are not JUST PLAIN STUPID.
Why would anyone take light rail (or any public transit) until it costs less than driving, takes less time than driving, or both?? The good of the planet doesn't work for mnost folks and studies have already shown, that for KC, light rail will not show a net reduction in environmental impact.
If Funk is backing Light Rail then it will fail.
There are alot of wealthy people in on this plot. Many of the very same contestants who the Funk ranted and raved at when he was the leader of the Oranage Revolution trying to get elected Mayor. These folks have donated hundreds of thousands of dollars with the aim of tricking the regular voter into giving this plan a thums up. A nice bunch of new friends for the Funk...
inafunkaboutthefunk,
the credit crisis will have little or no effect on the city's ability to get financing if approved. The crisis has eliminated the loans issued at the margins- the most risy of loans (ie personal unsecured loans, ARMs, high risk auto loans, etc).
If anything it has made municipal bonds that would have to be floated relatively MORE attractive to the market as a whole since more people are going to move away from higher risk corporate bonds.
someone tell Pat O'Neill to quit putting yard signs in the public access green space in front of homes to make it look like people oppose light rail.
Fuck all those h8ters. I've just put all of the money I've banked in the past couple of years into vans to transport people from the 'burbs to the 'starter' line.
Don't you'all screw with my business plan or I'll be getting a bail-out on all your backs.
Don't be a bunch of 'tards.
There is always away to make a buck. Light rail will cost most tax payers but the alert person will make a bundle of money. Good idea to have a mini bus service. I suggest that you talk with Councilman Johnson. He may just like that plan. He has said to some business leaders that the ATA will not be allowed to operate the light rail service.
No route = no vote. How am I to know they're not going to tear down my house for the new line? How am I to know they're not going to tear down my favorite bar on Main Street, Davey's Uptown Rambler's club? Gotta say no.
Besides, once Clay wins his lawsuit, we'll be obligated to build his light rail, which incidentally, had a set route...
"are you a liberal or just plain clueless" Actually I am a liberal fundamentalist or maybe a fundamental liberal.
I am only interested in sex, rock and roll, Oh yes and riding on Light Rail. I am going to propose to the Ata that they have rock bands on the train on Saturday night, hip hop on Friday and Sunday nights and even maybe a few "blacked out cars" for adults.
Light rail Light rail YEAAAAAAAA
If you want a yard sign opposing light rail call 816-276-5688
That is a great sign. I hope it is in a place that the Mayor will have to eat his words every day.
I've got my yard sign and it is electrified so that the zealots will get a little zap when they try to steal it.
Yes I mean the Gray Man's family.
It will be like zapping flies. bisst, bissst, another Gray bug bites the dust.
