KCMSD Board Member Replacement Policy

Read the Kansas City, Missouri School District policy carefully regarding Unexpired Term fulfillment and vacancies . . . There will soon be hearings which are open to the public and there is sure to be contentious debate . . . THERE ARE A LOT OF PEOPLE WHO BELIEVE THAT A LATINO SHOULD GET THE NOD IN ORDER TO ADDRESS THE DISPARITY IN TERMS OF PROVIDING SERVICES TO THE FASTEST GROWING GROUP IN THE SCHOOL DISTRICT. We'll see. Word is that School Board President Marilyn Simmons has the position locked up . . . And will use it to claim an unquestionable majority on the Board.

I simmons can create a majority and do something more power to her.

I am guessing KCMO schools will still be shit in a 5 years even if she does.

Anyone want to put money on that?

Rather than appoint someone based on their race, how about picking someone based on accomplishments?

Why not both?

Great idea, ziphead: Why not press for identity politics. It's served the board so well for the last 40 years.

Your going to give idiocy a bad name if you keep this up.

Agreed. Tony, don't use the racial banter on such an important topic.

The way schools are set up in this country is that schools are run by boards of CITIZENS of the communities which serve.

School boards are supposed to set policy and hire a superintendent to manage the schools and carry out the policies.

If you have a community whose district is largely minority, expect citizens from the minority community to be largely represented.

People who have a lot of 'accomplishments' generally are going to be in private enterprising, ACCOMPLISHING for a living.

So my observation is that boards are indeed run by AMATEURS. And when boards turn over due to elections, one of the first things that has to happen is to 'teach' new board members how to work a citizen-led organization.

Where to let the super do his/her job and where to show the leadership that parents in the district expect their elected boards to do.

And people who want change don't go to administrators, they call board members. Being a BOE member is to have your phone ring off the hook. Like COngressional reps, who at leas have large paid staffs to handle the requests and demands. BOE members don't have that. They work for free. And its a full time job handling parent issues, which means they have to have spouses who support their families.

Sure, some have no skills but they have enough popularity to get elected. MOst of their campaigns are self-funded which means BOE candidates buy yard signs and go to neighborhood get-acquainted coffees. Not a good way for citizens to choose those who run the schools.

But its the system we have. I think BOE's around the country do pretty much reflect the parents in the district. Blue collar districts will tend to have more blue collar BOE members. Upscale districts will have more upscale members.

I still firmly believe that the problem with innercity schools is mostly PARENTS who don't support educators. ANd yes, its partly money because poor inner city districts don't have the money to pay high taxes to build nicer schools, pay teachers better, have fancy science labs--not that innercity kids strive so much to be scientists!

We've already seen that when Missouri took over and threw money at the KCSD, they got nice schools but not much changed on the output. And the district spent a ton of money moving the kids around.

If people don't like it that astate board, not the city, really runs the police department, what makes you think the schools will be run any better by the state, rather than by people who live in their communities and get elected? No matter HOW weird those people are?
