TKC EXCLUSIVE!!! City Council considering a settlement in the "MammyGate" lawsuit!!!
The City Council will conduct a private meeting this afternoon. One of the things they'll be discussing is how to deal with the "MammyGate" controversy that has not only destroyed Mayor Funky's credibility within Kansas City's urban core but also consumed City Hall with gossip and hard feelings toward the current administration.
DISCUSSION OF A SETTLEMENT WITH THE VICTIM OF THE MAMMY SLUR, PAY DISPARITY AND RETALIATION IS NOW BEFORE THE COUNCIL!!!
Word is that Funkhouser's case is a loser and a trial could result in even bigger punitive damages against Kansas City. Additionally, a verdict in favor of the victim of discrimination and retaliation in the Mayor's office would undermine the credibility of local government and cause further tension and hard feelings.
The phrase that TKC has heard in relation to this talk is that a settlement in the "MammyGate" case would be an effort to "get it over with" and allow everyone to move on with more important business facing the our elected leaders.
While I agree with most of the logic behind this talk, it means that:
Kansas City could soon pay for Gloria Squitiro's actions and Mayor Funkhouser's stubborness!!!
IF Kansas City is forced to pay the bill for Squitiro's bigoted remarks THEN Mayor Funky has no choice but to remove his wife from City Hall. NO VOLUNTEER would be allowed to stay after a settlement of this kind . . . Sadly, I've seen the Mayor's stubborness up close and I think he'll continue to engage in nepotism at the behest of his wife, Kansas City's Co-mayor. So far he has simply ignored calls for Squitiro's removal and it looks as if Mayor Funkhouser will continue maintaining his stubborn stance, ignoring the advice of friends, supporters and his constituents . . . He'll talk of his "principles" while Kansas City is forced to pick up the tab.

The Cowardly Council Strikes Again.
The council would probably consider a settlement just to make Funk look bad regardless of the merit of the charges against his office.
Does it matter why they settle? It's still money they're giving away because of Squits.

it's time to ban volunteers from City Hall..maybe the City Council could add that provision to the settlement of Mammygate.
True enough Tony. But I think it's a long shot. It may be bad PR if it goes through but I think in the long run the Funk would be thankful he didn't have to go through a trial.

If our tax dollars go to pay off someone because of Gloria's inability to keep her yap shut, then I hope every news venue in this town shines a white-hot spotlight on this administration and burns them. So I don't get Bulky Item Pick-Up day regularly out of budget cuts, and friends I have are losing their jobs (budget cuts) and the streets are a mess (costs money to fill in potholes) BUT... we can pay because someone got called Mammy by someone who isn't even a city employee. Awesome. Wake me when this nightmare is over!
With mammy gate out there, the Freedom wards in KC will probably vote against ANYTHING the Funk advocates for. Goodbye light rail and good night mayor F-U!
If Mammy really thinks she deserves money for a gratuitous but not malicious comment is insane. Something for nothing. Mammy better learn her place.
You've done a good job on this story. Although I am shocked that some commenters think Ms. Bates is doing this for the money, or that she's thin-skinned, I guess I shouldn't be surprised. Gloria Squitiro has said much that is objectionable, and people who were interviewed by her before the mayor was sworn in have their own ugly stories to tell. Gloria and Mark do not represent the best of this city, they have instead brought shame on us. Gloria must get out of City Hall...
The Star reported that it had obtained a copy of a letter Funkhouser left for the Council on the topic of the Bates lawsuit. Not surprisingly, they didn't print it.
Santino, anyone get a copy of this letter to you yet?

I hope future mayors will screen their prospective employees to avoid hiring these kind of people. The freeloader types.
It was always about the money. Bates got mad because she felt she deserved higher pay than she was getting. Mammy was just the excuse in an attempt to extort the higher pay.
Perhaps a good lawyer can fashion a settlement agreement that releases the City of Kansas City, but allows Ruth Bates to continue her suit directly against the real culprit - Gloria. The settlement would also give Ruth a war chest to continue her fight.
That would hit the Funk-Squit group where it hurts - in the wallet.
If MONEY was the real reason, why not? She was paid far less than what the job entailed. She was not given the full scope of her duties prior to her hiring. And she was subsequently asked to prop up Joe Miller and do the typing for other staff members.
But beyond that, squit does not have the right to defame some one, call them out of their name. dehumanize them with her sexual talk AND ANTICS IN THE OFFICE.
Ed Wolf did not do his highly paid job and respond to staff complaints regarding squit. City Attorney Beaufort did not protect US from squit from the beginning. This lawsuit held back alot. The emails will tell a dirty story.
The council will not settle out of court. Most members want a fair hearing.
The rest of Kansas City just wants both the mayors GONE.
I suppose they will low ball Bates, and she will take a pass.
There were 8 city hall people with their foot on Bates' neck. They ganged up on her from day one.
Why should she take the bait and let the bastard funk-ee off the hook? If she settles before he has to hire an attorney and the city foots the bill he walks free. No way!
I hope she goes to court and everyone involved in this sorry mess will have to explain their actions.
