TKC EXCLUSIVE!!! P&L District continues its slippery slope into a financial abyss!!!

Let's review the progress (or lack thereof) when it comes to the Kansas City's P&L District . . .

  • Longstanding local businesses were forced out in order to make room for the speculative venture that was approved only after numerous failed attempts.

  • Construction of the project has been delayed numerous times and there's really no telling when the the place will finally be complete.

  • In order to thwart any kind of level playing field or fair competition the out of town company running the place threatened to sue anybody who also wants to drink a beer outdoors in Kansas City. TKC reported that story first by the way.

  • Parking is inadequate and discriminatory against people who need wheelchair access. The parking garage is off limits to people who aren't ambulatory because only narrow and dangerous stairs offer an access.

  • THE PRICE OF PARKING AT THE P&L DISTRICT IS SOON TO INCREASE 300%!!!

  • The going rate for a beer at P&L District bars is about 9 dollars.

  • And here's the TKC EXCLUSIVE PART - Kansas City people affiliated with the project and disgusted by it tell me: TWO P&L DISTRICT TENANTS ARE ALREADY SLATED TO CLOSE DOWN AND LEAVE BY NEXT SUMMER!!!

  • It's not that profits aren't good at the P&L District . . . There just not as good as the figures projected and let's not forget that these national chain restaurants, bars and eateries have absolutely no loyalty to this town or the financial future of the so-called Downtown Renaissance.

Really, people who know about speculative urban development scams aren't really surprised by a move like this . . . It's nothing more than a bait and switch and it happens with most ambitious developments: There is a promise of exciting, never before seen attractions and the end result is a "Cards & More" along with maybe an Indian restaurant. The timing of the P&L District abandonment coincides with standard operating procedures for these chains and evaluations of consecutive quarterly profit goals that are FAR LESS THAN EXPECTED.

Really, this EXCLUSIVE, LIVE AND LATE BREAKING NEWS reported by TKC isn't unexpected but it should be a wake up call to Kansas City cheerleaders who might want to realize that businesses are preparing to move out of the under-performing (non) attraction before it's even finished.

Tony - there's a lot of negative things that can be said about the P&L and you've definitely said them. But your average beer price thing is just silly and not even close to being accurate.

Anyway, what tenants are closing? I'm going to guess Lucky Strike and Vinino.

I was at Lucky Strike. I paid $8 for a Bud Light. I'm never going back.

If you paid $9 for a beer it's because they were giving you the "Mexican Pricing."

Thanks, I appreciate it. I was reminded of the time that TKC accused some place down there of having a minority seating section, probably because there was one other couple in it that was black.

The P&L District is not always so crowded. I went there last week and it was pretty much a ghost town.

I'm guessing it's the Irish bar.

If the price of parking is going up 300% (source?) then that would make it $6 for unlimited parking. Still a steal.

I would guess that Vinino is one place that would be likely to go... it never seemed to figure out what it wanted to be. It's a Cordish test concept anyway and Cordish would quickly replace it with another test concept.

The longstanding businesses forced out were a strip club, a drag queen sandwich shop, and a place that sold rubber stamps. I'm sure Tony would prefer downtown revert back to the way it was back then.

Drinks are expensive, yes, but I haven't yet found a $9 beer.

Entertainment areas are hard to "create" They are more likely to just happen over time like Westport or the Crossroads. They can just as easily erode over time. The big difference is the city did not fund Westport or the Crossroads so their failure is not on the backs of the taxpayers.

Another business forced out: Danny Edwards Barbeque, but he's doing fine on SW Blvd. It's a shame though that a city famous for its steaks & BBQ doesn't have a hometown restaurant in there. I won't eat at Famous Daves & Ted's. With Ted's, its more that Ted Turner is a communist - I digress...Anywho - TKC, can you ever write something positive?

My sisters have been going down to the P&L District and the Sprint Center for events and socializing. They know about my opposition to the P&LD. One encouraging sign is that one of them relates that she is already bored with the P&LD.

There is a local restaurant - ChefBurger. No, its not a BBQ joint but its a fantastic place owned by a guy who's doing a ton to support downtown and the Crossroads, so go to ChefBurger1

I rode up on the elevator today in the P&L parking garage. I guess that you still don't let the facts get in the way of your rants.

Danny Edwards wasn't forced out for the P&L District or even for the Sprint Center. In fact, the old Danny Edwards building is still standing. It was forced out by a developer who was planning a new high-rise office tower for that block but that project is now on hold because the economy tanked.

Wayne and the then council sold our soul to Cordish. What pols dont understand is that when an anchor-destination gets developed (Sprint/Performing Arts etc) you dont write checks to get businesses to appear. They will come in droves.

Meh, I like the Flying Saucer. Who cares about parking? It's cheaper than any other "big" city.

If the crowds go down, then so will the prices. If the businesses move out, maybe some locals will.

At the very least, the bums will have some sweet new places to sleep.

Not sure what makes less sense during this economy -- charging $8 for watered-down beer or paying $8 to drink it.

I've been to five restaurants at P&L and enjoyed them all. If there's one business that I'd like to actually see go into the tank, though, it's Lucky Strike. Outrageous prices for small portions. Servers and support staff who think they're so cool to be working at a glorified bowling alley. A hands-down BS dress code. That place could fall off the face of the earth and I wouldn't blink.

Was at the P&L District just last night. Parked for free on street. Ate a good meal at a local establishment (Chefburger). Paid $4.25 for very large beers at Flying Saucer. Yes, Tony, it is horrible down there.

let's get straight: Copaken White & Blitt want to build a new office tower on the block where Danny Edwards and Gigis Wigs sits. They did nor own that land and the owners of those properties did not want to sell. HOWEVER, Copaken DID own a bunch of property below what is now the Sprint Center. Well, KCMO really wanted that land to build the Sprint so they did a backroom deal with Copaken: Sell us your land for our project and we'll condemn Danny Edwards and Gigis through imminent domain and then turn that property over to you.

What they didn't count on was Gigis suing the fuck out of them (KCMO) and now the whole house of cards is tied up in court.
