Dress codes aimed at minorities and hip-hop attire are the Kansas City area's newest form of restrictive racial covenants!!!

Kansas City was built on racism and people like J.C. Nichols (especially him) made fortunes from making sure that Black people, Jews and many other minorities couldn't live near places like The Plaza.

The strategy is still in effect.

Don't believe me? Check out the recent story of a local guy arrested at a graduation for not keeping with the dress code. Look at the photo closely . . . Tell me what you see . . .

What I see is a pretty clear cut pattern that's forming all over this town.

The P&L District kicked off their party by taking aim at hip-hop attire (and mostly minorities who wear it).

Before that a popular bar in Brookside began making insane proclamations about baseball caps and sports jerseys.

Sadly, if these rules were enforced across the board they might be defensible (not really) but they're not . . . The real world application of these arbitrary dress codes serves as nothing more than flimsy justification to chase young, minority males away from Kansas City destinations. Pretending otherwise is nothing more than willful ignorance or tacit support for this town's current manifestation of racism.

Need proof: Simply watch the door at most places where "dress codes" are enforced and see who gets more scrutiny . . . It's the same kind of racial profiling of Latinos CITIZENS that's encouraged whenever the word "Immigration" is uttered.

I've long heard that there's nothing new under the sun and I'm starting to believe it . . . Especially since Kansas City racists who are usually quite creative with their crackpot theories are now recycling efforts to keep minorities out of mostly white establishments.

I doubt they would allow some white farmer to come in overalls and a torn straw hat. African Americans want it both ways. They want to be treated the same as whites but want to be culturally different. Guess what, whites who are culturally different get discriminated against too. Just look at bikers, rednecks, goths etc. They are all unwelcome at a lot of places.

I looked closely at the photo and saw a guy who dressed like shit for what should be a formal occasion. Tony only sees the few visible pixels of skin color.

Tony's the racist for saying that minorities don't know how to dress properly and that they are incapable of going out in anything other thna hip-hop attire.

I looked at the picture and saw a thug trying to "represent" at a semi-formal occassion. Also, he just so happened to be black.

He wasn't arrested for the dress code you a-hole. He was denied entry to the graduation. It was Ruskin H.S. and they were told well before hand NO JEANS. He became up set left and ran a key down the side of the police car. That is what he was arrested for. Get your facts straight Tony. Don't believe me get a copy of the report it is a matter of public record.

The gangsta culture is reknown for fucking things up.

It's not about race, it's about certain musicians and the idiots that idolize them. Plenty of white kids dress like baggy idiots too.

Who the fuck wants to go there anyways? A god damn beer is 9$

Businesses have the right to impose dress codes on employees and customers... nothing racist about it.

It's all completely ridiculous. When I moved back here I couldn't BELIEVE the lame-ass dress code signs I keep walking past on, well, lame-ass bars and whatnot. And I still can't. It's total crap.

Those dress codes have more to do with BEHAVIOR and less to do with RACE.

True, they may target AFRO-Americans specifically but that's only because of the way so many of us conduct ourselves. Granted not all AFRO-Americans behave like the stereotypical thug so often portrayed in the news and on BET. I'm a prime example of that.

*Ok, I admit... the term "AFRO-American" is not politically correct. I only used it because I think it's hilarious.

Places like the P&L district only use dress codes like that to keep out the riff-raff that coincidentally happen to wear stuff like doo-rags, saggy pants, baseball hats, sports jerseys, bandanas, t-shirts, oversized clothes, etc.

If white farmers from the most rural hillbillyiest parts of Missouri had a propensity for committing crimes and behaving in a way that drove patrons away from businesses, them I'm sure we'd see dress codes aimed at keeping people like them out of the P&L district too.

Let's be honest...the dress codes at most bars are designed to keep out blacks and hispanics who dress like gang bangers. I'm fine with that...as I don't want to look/hear/experience that s**t. I say great!!

I've been indirectly affected by these dress codes more than once. Some of my friends, who aren't thugs but are black, have been denied entry to the Brooksider and a couple of bars in JoCo.

I dont really mind the dress code so long as they are up front with it. I know when I was younger, I would go to Orlandos and they would constantly make up some BS reason my black friends couldnt get in. Once I intentionally dressed in a baggier shirt than them, they let me in and not my friends. That is some bulls***

That being said, have you been to the P&L District or the Brooksider lately? What about Westport? Where do you feel safer?

Westport has gotten out of control, and I have been threatened more than once there. I wont go back. The people who own the bars have to make a living, and if that means keeping out some people at the expense of others, so be it. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that places have dress codes and dress appropriately

Walpho, IF your comment was directed to me then I think we're on the same page.

I was giving the enforcers of the dress code the benefit of the doubt. I'm sure there are some that use the dress code to prevent blacks or hispanics from entering their business. Sadly, many ignorantly assume all blacks and hispanics are thugs. I'm sure there are places here in KC where a black man could go dressed in a tux and still be denied entry because of a bouncer twisting the dress code to apply to them.

The dress codes don't discriminate against people. They discriminate against clothing. Most businesses have dress codes. Some schools have dress codes. Hospitals have dress codes. Courts and federal buildings have dress codes. So why are some people making a big deal if a bar or club decides to have a dress code?

If you want to go Bar X, but its dress code says no cargo shorts, no long chains, no baggy jeans, etc., you have two choices:

1. Adhere to the dress code and go the bar.

2. Don't go to the bar.

Funny you should ask. I happen to have the dress code for entrance to Casa de Tony.

1. No whites allowed.
2. No blacks allowed.
3. No Asians allowed.
4. No females allowed.*
5. No English spoken here.
6. Two tattoo minimum for all adult visitors. At least one tattoo must have been received while in prison.
7. All La Raza members receive 50% discount on Wednesday night menudo special.
8. No shoes? No shirt? No problemo!

* Except for Well Hell Michelle.

Tony,
I normally like your blog, but you're off-base on this one.

If you want to open a bar and let in the thugs wearing hip hop attire (be they white, black, Mexican, whatever) and right this horrible wrong, then be my guest.

Just make sure you have your liability insurance paid up, because you'll have all kinds of trouble on your hands. It's happened before, and it will happen again.

Bar owners (and every other business, for that matter) have the right to refuse service to anyone. As long as the rules are posted and even-handedly enforced, there should be no problem with it.

If the wannabes want to go to the bar, they're gonna have to look more like everyone else, or quit their whining. That's just the way it is.

tony what you don't get is that disctimination is the foundation of bars. Its called community. You don't go to Daves Stagecoach to pick up the syph from tarted up woo-girls and you don't go to PnL for neighborly conversation. You don't go to either place to hang out with a bunch of sketchy gangstas who don't buy anything and don't tip. There's no reason for them to be there, they don't contribute to either community, so why not run 'em off?

Besides, Im sure PR's Place will be happy to serve 'em!
