Obvious question

If Kemper Arena is empty, and people have to park at Kemper to go Big 12 Tournament . . . Why didn't they just have the Big 12 at Kemper?

This question is especially relevant (as always) considering that half of Electric Avenue isn't complete yet, there's obviously going to be a big time parking crunch and the fact that nobody goes to a basketball game to admire a building.

Also, please don't give me crap about all the money people are going to spend downtown when sports fans are notoriously cheap and can get filled up on the pricey hot dogs and beer at the arena.

  1. Because Kemper is an outdated hole. And it smells.

I know you're just looking for things to pick on, but you should actually ATTEND one of these events before casting aspersions as to what venue is better suited to host the Big 12 tournament.

For Kansas City to keep up with other cities, they had to build the Sprint Center. Kemper Arena is a terrible arena. I've been to both. The Sprint Center will be a fantastic place to watch basketball. Especially something like the Big 12 tournament, where fans stick around the area because of breaks in sessions, etc. At least there will be SOMETHING for them to walk to now, instead of...oh yeah...there's NOTHING around Kemper.

  2. And "sports fans are notoriously cheap"? Where's your evidence? How about the millions of dollars that Chiefs fans dump into Jackson County DESPITE the crappy team? KU vs. MU. Big 12 football championship... where are these so-called "notoriously cheap sports fans"?

  3. Kemper is not that bad. I went there a couple months ago and it doesn't stink. It's just old but Tony is right because people don't care about the stadium if there is a good game playing.

  4. Keep in mind that whenever they have something of comparable draw at Kemper, such as, say, the American Royal, they always have everyone park downtown and shuttle to Kemper. Where's Tony's outrage at the "lack of parking" at Kemper when that happens?

  5. The attendees will only get the choice of a hot dog and beer at Sprint, since only a few restaurants are open in the all mighty KC live. Any one who tries to eat at those establishments will be told it will be 30 to 45 minutes for a table them have to wait and wait and wait and wait and wait and wait and wait and wait and wait and wait and wait and wait and wait and wait and wait and wait and wait and wait and wait, then not get a table.

  6. The tournament would not be being played here if it were not for Sprint Center. Thursday and Friday parking will be a mess but guess what most people attending the games on those days will be from out of town and staying downtown. Guess what that means.....they wont need parking spots. When Kansas plays on Friday night people working downtown will be gone.

As to the "sports fans are cheap" tell that to the guy who gets wasted off of the 6 dollar beers and pays $100 bucks a ticket. Sports fans are cheap, give me a break.

  7. 8:46.

Yeah, there's so few places that will be open.

Now open or opening this week inside the P&L District: McFadddens, Vinino, Howl at the Moon, Raglan Road, Gordon Biersch, Famous Dave's, Angels Rock Bar, Ted's Montana Grill, Bristol, Chipotle, Tengo Sed, Lucky Strike, Drum Room, and probably another couple of places I'm forgetting.

Within a 15=20 minute walk, and this is just what comes off the top of my head so I'm probably missing many:
Willies, Madrigal, Crosstown Station, Cigar Box, The Brick, Sarah's, Grinders, Kansas City Cafe, Souperman, JP Wine Bar, Bulldog, 1924 Main, Paddy O'Quigley's, The Cashew, Bar Natasha, Nara, Daddy's, Tootsies, Michael Smith, Balanca's, Los Tules, Art of Pizza, Pizza Bella, Cheeseheads, YJ's, Truman's, Mango Room, Fred P. Ott's, Perk Up, Cupini's, Planet Sub, Jimmy John's, The Studio, Zoo Bar, 13th Street Bar & Grill, 12 Baltimore, Phillips Chophouse, The Savoy, Red Dragon House, Los Coralles, The Peanut, The Quaff, Tanners, The Majestic, all the assorted hotel bars and restaurants, everything at crown Center and Union Station, Cafe Al Dente, Harry's Country Club, Vivace, Antonio's Pizza, Dos Hombres, River Market Brewery, Bo Lings, Blue Nile, Winslows, Minsky's, Tarantinos, Red Front, and if for just a little more exercise: Le Fou Frog, Caddy Shack, Garozzo's.

Yeah, there will be noplace for anyone to eat.

  8. Tony's last sentence on this post shows that as usual he is uninformed about what he writes about. You cannout buy beer at thee arena during the Big 12. It's against their rules.
