Local anarchists (i.e. The KMA) are already moving to fight the Minutemen.
Here are just a few of their tactics that are soon to cause a stir in Kansas City.
Here's what the KMA is urging Kansas City residents to do:
They are pressuring local hotels:
The hotels they are staying in (and there is much reason to believe that one of these hotels is hosting their meeting for the second day of their conference) need to have a clear message sent to them.Then there is the protest:
The MCDC has rented a block of rooms in the following hotels. We’re calling on any and all people concerned about the Minutemen Civil Defense Corps to bombard these hotels with phone calls:
a. Marriot – 4445 Main, Kansas City MO, 816-531-3000
b. Holiday Inn – 1 E. 45th St., Kansas City MO, 816-753-7400
c. Hyatt Regency Crown Center – 2345 McGee St., Kansas City MO 64108, 816-421-1234
d. Hampton Inn – 4600 Summit, Kansas City MO, 816-448-4600
e. Sheraton Suites – 70 W 47th, Kansas City MO, 816-931-4400
When calling, we’re asking people to be specific about their concerns:
• The Minutemen Civil Defense Corps and its members are renting rooms from your hotel.
• The Minutemen Civil Defense Corps is an anti-immigrant vigilante organization with ties to international white supremacist organizations.
• The Minutemen are coming to Kansas City to further recruit and strengthen their white supremacist agenda.
• We’re concerned with your hotel’s active support for a white supremacist organization by renting their organization rooms.
• We would ask you to take a stand against racial terror in the KC community by cancelling any and all contracts that you may have the Minutemen or any attendees of their conference.
• If this is impossible, we would ask your hotel to make a public statement denouncing the Minutemen and their tactics and post this at your hotel in a public space.
2) On Friday, Feb 1st, people will meet at 4PM at Cristo Rey School (211 W. Linwood BLVD) in Kansas City and then march to the Uptown Theater (3700 Broadway St), the location of the first day of the Minutemen meeting. We are calling for you to come and join the people of Kansas City in response to the Minutemen’s racist action in our community.And then there are parts in this passage that I've highlighted which seem a little troubling:
3) The following day, Saturday, Feb 2nd, the Minutemen will be holding their membership-only meeting to discuss and determine their plans for 2008. This meeting will be crucial to the ability of the Minutemen to continue to function as an organization.First of all, thanks Mayor Funkhouser for this pressure cooker situation coming to Kansas City . . . Is this the kind of thing you wanted when you said you weren't afraid of conflict?
In response, Kansas Mutual Aid is calling on fellow anti-racists to converge on the location (TBA as these details become available, but keep this date open if you want to participate in actions to shut them down) of the meeting and help us “build a wall against racism.” We will shut this meeting down!
More details will be announced as they become available. There is room for a variety of tactics, and we are calling on anyone wishing to confront racism to join us. We encourage people to form affinity groups and take autonomous action.
TKC reported pretty much these same facts a week ago and noted the potential for violence and for the situation to get out of control. I received a few pissed off e-mails from the Latino Community who have put their head in the sand and don't realize that anarchists are out to push their own agenda and don't have the best interests of Kansas City Latinos at heart. The part about "autonomous action" scares the hell out of me and reminds me that anarchists are known for this tactic of using peaceful protests to mask and provide cover for their violent deeds in riots from Seattle and around the world when it comes to WTO protests . . . This isn't a freaking joke. TKC isn't making some stupid prediction and only hopes that this blog can do a small part avoid any violence in Kansas City over this nonsense that Mayor Funkhouser started.
I hope they are listening now because the chatter on the Internets has been out there and only TKC has been pointing out the troubling overtones so far.

Sadly, this is the way things are moving and the silence of the local media, the idiocy of Latino leaders in going along with this garbage and the willingness of anarchists to manipulate the Latino Community in this regard are all working to make sure that Latinos are left holding the bag on this one (nullus).

Has anyone with the city even started to plan what the response should be if these two goon squads decide to mix-it-up outside the Uptown? Or worse yet, what if a group of yahoos from either side decides to fire off a couple of rounds in one ethnic neighborhood or another just to set off a riot?

The Uptown IS a TIF project. Here Kansas City is your tax dollars at work. By the way, we gave them TIF and they are not performing. General revenue is used to pay back the bonds.

I agree with the person who said it should be a non issue. Worse case scenario is they get in an altercation and the police mop up the mess. Two fringe groups with little or no pull in the real and rational world. And Tony, the people who blame an entire community for the actions of a few, are going to do that regardless of the circumstances.

The simple solution to this problem would have to withdraw Frances appointment to the Parks Board. But seeing Kansas City has an "assman" for mayor the Frances has cost KC,MO $5 million dollars and counting.

ReplyDeleteTony, KMA does humanitarian work. They worked with the Mennonites in Greensburg. And you can't find a more peaceful group than the Mennonites. KMA is not a violent group. It is a good thing that they are involved.
