He only knows numbers: Mayor Funky flunks quiz about KC's gay community

Like it or not, KC has a very vibrant and politically active gay community (I also hear they're good dancers). If you don't believe me, you can check out mags like CampKC for more relevant information than I could ever provide. However, I do know for a fact that Mayor Funkhouser is only interested in cold Vulcan logic, meaningless numbers and little or no interaction with people who don't completely support his agenda wife. Put simply, if you haven't been a supporter of Mayor Funky from day one and his wife's bare feet in the Mayor's office . . . Forget about making his X-mas list.

Anyway, in a recent interview in The Advocate . . . Mayors of other cities were able to not only talk up their towns but also mentioned aspects about the LGBT community in their cities. Mayor Funky couldn't come up with anything that would lure young, gay professionals to KC other than good real estate values. In the middle of a housing slump no less. My God, he didn't even mention KC has a percentage of one DJ for every 3 people in the Midtown area.

Anyway, once again this showed little knowledge of KC as one of the most gay friendly cities in the Midwest (Joplin doesn't count) and the fact that gay politicos (like Jolie Justus) abound in KC.

And you know what: A very smart person once told me that a politico's insensitivity always starts with minority communities but ends up focused on the gay community. I guess they knew what they were talking about . . . Just a thought.

Anyway, this article was forwarded my way by a couple of prominent members of KC's gay community and I'm guessing that they aren't thrilled with Mayor's Funky's administration either. Which isn't surprising.

Also, NO HOMO on this whole post.

I look in the dictionary just to see if it has changed the definition on minority:

a part of a population differing from others in some characteristics and often subjected to differential treatment b : a member of a minority group......an effort to hire more minorities>

I guess it hasn't.

Gay people generally like animals -- maybe we should build more dog parks?

Tony you are really reaching on this one. I read Funks interview and it sounds fine. What gay man wouldn't want a three story Victorian house in the city? He even ends his speel with "And like they say, there’s no place like home." In case you didn't know, Judy Garland is a gay icon ( http://ask.yahoo.com/20030909.html )

On a more serial and relevant note, do you think gloria has the herp?

On the subject of Gay Life in Kansas City -- is it true that Frances Semler performed cunnilingus on Laura Ingraham backstage at the Uptown?

Anonymous 6:52 and 6:56 At least it was Laura Ingraham and not Phyllis Schlafly receiving the service! BIG DIFFERENCE. Scarier than an Ed Wood feature.

Still I have to ask: Was Gloria standing in her there in her black leather teddy holding her whip? The get up which she told Funk he is not worthy to see when she had the kid's name changed? "That's it, MY NAME NOT YOURS, cry ... you worm."

This Advocate story could spell more trouble for Funk, because thus far the LGBT community has given him a free ride (visualize what you may) on the Semler issue even though her connection to The Eagle Forum makes it clear she is NOT a Straight Ally. Maybe some LGBT community leaders will see that Funk's retrograde "principles" are consistent and harmful to large swaths of the and that silence is not an option. The silence should end LGBT leaders and commentators.

Tony, you may just need to change the name of this blog to "Funk's A Bigot, Again."

How did it become the mayor's job to make a city "gay friendly"? To suggest a mayor could or should attempt to change the culture of a city is ridiculous. Why not be redneck friendly? How about biker friendly? LBGT are people, same as bikers and rednecks. If the culture doesn't suit them, they may chose somewhere else. Same goes for bikers and rednecks. But it is not the mayors job to chose which culture to promote. Everyone should be treated equally and with respect but it ends there.

Anonymous -- How dare you write write such a horrible thing about me and Laura Ingraham. I have never performed that vile act in my life and even if I did, it would be on someone younger and hotter than Laura Ingraham. More like Jennifer Lopez (but only if she's not an illegal alien).
Sincerely, Frances Semler

Tony found your blog thru Camp. Nice to know yer here.. however having read Funk's entire piece in The Advocate, I have to agree with an earlier comment that I also think what Funk said was more than fine.

Let us all remember that the Funky one got attacked via a mailing campaign during the election because he was LGBT friendly, and the tall one proudly got on TV and said yes he was!

Show me another person running for office who has had the balls to do that! I don't agree with him keeping Semler on the Parks Board, but I still believe he is very much LGBT friendly and on our side.

Looking forward to reading more of your blog. Keep up the good work!
