It's time to muzzle these dog park bitches!!!

I thought it was impossible for me to lose even more faith in the residents of Kansas City but yesterday's shameful display at the Parks Board meeting provided further evidence that so many people in this town have insanely screwed up priorities. Additionally, we all know there is hell to pay when a white woman can't get what she wants BUT the fact that the media had to be called in to witness a recent temper tantrum on the part of local dog lovers is simply ridonkulous.

Really, the way these bitches conducted themselves like animals was truly embarrassing. You might recall that the KC area Latino Leadership had their own problems with the Parks Board but NOT ONCE did the discourse break down into threats of violence and cursing among the main players. In fact, only the anonymous d-bags on this blog, talk radio hosts and a few lone nuts turned the debate ugly with racial slurs, personal attacks and threatening phone calls . . . But I digress, the point here is that folks in favor of KC spending precious resources on over-privileged mutts let this "debate" go to the dogs. The Star has some interesting details:
Shouts of “unfair” and “shame on you” erupted in the packed boardroom when President John Fierro announced that the park board would not hear more testimony on the subject.

“What you’re doing is totally wrong,” said Deb Hipp, who organized support for a dog park to serve the Brookside and Waldo areas. “You’re an embarrassment to the city.”

Outbursts from the crowd included foul language and threats to sue the park board. Police officers were called to maintain order, but there were no serious incidents.

“You just set the parks back 20 years,” Jeremy Schlicher, the designer of the proposed park, told the board. “You’re encouraging people to drive” to get to an off-leash area in a regional park, he said.

After the vote, the crowd moved to the lobby of the park administration building at 4600 E. 63rd St. and continued to complain loudly. The commissioners had to call a brief recess when dog-park supporter Gwen Caranchini returned to the boardroom and resumed her complaints.
All this on behalf of . . . DOGS. What a damn shame.

The main culprit behind this bastardization of the political process is a group of extremist, dog park activists who call themselves WOOF - Well Organized Off-Leash Friends. From the looks of the TV Footage these folks, like local cycling advocates, are nothing more than a predominantly white, affluent, extremely vocal and self-absorbed group of opportunists only looking out for their own hobby.

It's hard to even list where these people have gone wrong but think of it this way: Kansas City has hosted more than 65 homicides this year, the $300 million Sprint Center is without an anchor tenant only a couple of months away from opening, the prospects of the P&L District look dismal and even top ranking City officials warn that parking downtown and around Electric Avenue is going to be tight and expensive, while deep underground KC's sewers and water infrastructure are in need of more than 4 BILLION DOLLARS worth or repair . . . Yet what gets these people raving mad is that there is no place for their puppies to roam free? This kind of so-called grass roots organizing is beyond frivolous, these advocates for a midtown KC Dog Park are morally bankrupt. They are unworthy of Democracy and their selfish and time consuming agenda in spite of bigger problems facing Kansas City only serves as a visible (and mostly overweight) reminder that so much of American culture has sunk into nothing more than instant gratification and worthless, egotistical ideologies which put dogs or luxury hybrid vehicles in front of the greater good.

Obviously, some folks might disagree with me. But it's worth noting that already these doggie complaints are being directed toward the Funkhouser Administration. A local dog blogger (heh) writes:
This is going to be a (yet another) PR debacle for the Marky Mark's appointed Funky bunch. Marky Mark based his campaign off of public openness -- that didn't happen in this case. He also called out early in his administration that he badly wants to increase use of the city's public park spaces, and then had his parks department, behind closed doors, turn down an opportunity where scores more people would be using Sunnyside Park.
And while most of these complaints are fair enough, they mistakenly misrepresent the issue of a neighborhood dog park as something that matters. I especially like the attempts to connect this debate to the ruckus that was raised over a member of the Parks Board belonging to a hate/vigilante group as if the issue of doggie luxury in Midtown KC was tantamount to the national debate over the security of the borders and the plight of MILLIONS of immigrants looking to make a better life in the United States. Again, the priorities of KC dog enthusiasts are so repugnant that I only hope most of these women who have taken up the doggie rights cause have been spayed in order to preserve the local gene pool. Nevertheless, the blogger quoted above has a valid point - Mayor Funky made promises to folks like the WOOF wackos as well. And while the Funkhouser Administration can keep minority leaders and their issues at bay, these bitches have proven they can bark so much louder.

Yet, as funny as the temper tantrums of affluent white women can be, essentially this is a sad story that calls attention to notions of supremacy in our small city. Once again this story points out that when affluent, passionate white folks speak . . . People listen. It's just disappointing that rather than working to benefit any people living in Kansas City, these dog park advocates chose to vehemently fight for the best interests of their pets.

Once again, you just proved you have no idea what you're talking about.
This is a free speech issue. If your mommy had gone to the parks board meetings to speak about something and been denied the right to speak during the so-called public comment portion of the meeting, you can bet they'd be pissed.

And as for griping about what other people choose to work on ... get a life. You spend your life spewing hate and negativity and posting pitchers of nekkid women on your blog, while these dog park proponents are doing something positive for their community. Every progressive city has numerous dog parks (bike trails too) but since you're a cave dweller, I'm sure you don't know or care about that. So, go ahead and keep up your campaign to keep Kansas City in the dark ages!

Free speech issue?? You must be kidding. Do you really think that people like Gwen Caranchini have a right to waste people's time? They are free to talk all they want - the Parks Commission wisely chose to stop listening to them.

Tony ... oops, I mean "Anonymous" -
People have been forced to listen to your mommy for years. If you are going to have a public comment session, then you can't pick and choose which topics you are going to allow the public to comment on. Period. But I guess you don't care about silly little things like the First Amendment. You're a disgrace to this city.

Off leash runs are not for dogs, they are for lazy dog owners who can't find the energy to walk their dogs on a leash. Leashes protect the dog, other dogs and people.

Anonymous 6:50 - I am the anonymous commenter you're referring to, and I assure you that I'm not Tony. I'm much better looking, and I don't live in a basement.

Didn't Gwen Caranchini get disbarred? Is that who you're getting your legal advice from?

Public comment periods may be shut down, as Mr. Fierro wisely did. And, yes, you actually can control the agenda in a public meeting. Thank God! Otherwise fools like you would waste the time of smart people at public meetings all the time, rambling on about stuff you know nothing about. Like the law of public meetings.

It all matters Tony. While dog parks aren't the biggest issue in the world, there was a community of locals that was willing to pay for this amenity themselves. At some point you have to cater to the middle class or else there will be no tax revenue in the city to fund schools, a police force, etc (TIF has made sure the rich aren't paying for it).

You should know that the status quo isn't working...and yet, at every corner, any attempt to improve things (without TIF) is shot down by the naysayers. We complain that the status quo isn't working, yet resist any attemt at changing the status quo.

The whole mindset of the city is broken...and your rants are far more damaging than any attempt at a dog park could ever be.

Whether you are for or against the dog park, the behavior of the Parks Board in this case was poor.

Hiding an agenda item and then "posting" it in the lobby of the building at the bare minimum 24 hour advance limit. Refusing to discuss agenda items over the phone. I've heard two direct accounts that one commissioner was openly mocking dog park supporters before the meeting.

I'm guessing the Parks Board tried to hide the agenda and squelch the public comments section to avoid some conflict? Well guess what? You signed on to a very prestigious and public committee. Public service is not going to be all attaboys and accolades. Sometimes people get mad and you have to deal with some upset constituents.

If the members of the Parks Board are too faint of heart to deal with some differing opinions on park use, they should try another committee, or none at all.

Just my opinion...

For once I agree with TKC. I live near that park, and I am a dog owner, but turning Sunnyside into a dog park will ruin it. Every asshole that doesn't want their dog shitting in their own yard from across South KC is going to fill that place with land mines. Their are a lot of people that do not own dogs using that park that would be put off by packs of dogs running around.

They were going to fence off an area on the East side of the park (adjacent to the Big Lots/strip mall area). That part of the park appears to be relatively unused (from the few times I've been there) and would actually DECREASE "land mines" because they would remain in the fenced in area vs out where the rest of the people use the parks.

Mark, you're absolutely correct in that it wasn't a matter of vetoeing the park that got everyone's hackles up but the completely shutting out dialogue and going into a backroom deal was very Jr-High-ish.

Tony,

You are entertaining as usual, and this time you are also right. Animal lovers need to get a sense of perspective. I love animals too, but I would NEVER get all hot and bothered about an off leash dog park, and try to invent some kind of democratic crisis out of thin (albeit stinky) air!

Everyone is missing the point

a) They were asking for no city funding and were offering to fund it themselves

b) They were looking to use underutilized park space and make the park more utilized

c) they were completely shut out of what was supposed to be a democratic process through a back-room deal. They were not given proper notice, and the parks board catered to the desires of basically one person whom they were friends with.

It has much less to do with the dog park than going through the correct process.

Regardless of how you stand on the dog park, you should be ashamed of the process they took to get rid of it...and be very concerned about our "democratic" process.

I'm sorry... you are missing the point. Jesus himself could have offered to fund it and we wouldn't care.

Simply put... Not In My Backyard. We live in a nice neighborhood and don't want to open it up to Leawood and Brookside residents who won't utilize their own open spaces.

Yes, it is a race issue. Brookside has a huge underutilized by white people park (75th Holmes). You guys don't want it there because it is frequented by black people. You Brookside people can't keep secrets. We know what is said in your Doggy meetings.

Sunnyside is not an underutilized park, by the way. No one bought that lie. You might as well quit using it.

I was out at Sunnyside Park on Saturday afternoon (my first time in the park actually, I'm neither a Waldo nor a Brookside resident) and what I saw as a few folks having a family reunion, 2 guys playing tennis, and 2 people sitting at a picnic table in the shade.

It was an 85 degree, beautiful sunny weekend day, and had that group not had their family reunion there, there would have been a total of 4 people in a 26 acre park.

I'm sure it's busier at other times. I never attended a WOOF meeting -- so I can't speak to their "doggie meetings", but the Sunnyside Park dog park was steamrolled by one resident who was friends with a member of the Parks board. Not public opinion. Not a public hearing. Not what was best for the neighborhood. Just simply closed door meeting between friends.

Aggie Stackhaus stopped this. Anyone who followed the Funk campaign knows that she was appointed this position for providing her own form of annoying cheerleading everywhere that the Funk went. She had a friend that lived in the area of the dog park and knew exactly how to manipulate the rules to stop this effort.

She is a demonstration that the new boss is just the same as the old boss. KC didn't gain anything with Funk except more of the same.
