Fighting back against Funky?
Tonight Mayor Funky is taking his dog and pony show to the Westside (Guadalupe Center at 5:30 p.m. to be exact) . . . I'm interested in what will happen but not really interested enough to attend the public meeting. My old boss, Joe Arce from KC Hispanic News is going to moderate and truth be told I think the thing is going to be a calm, rational, open exchange of ideas that really isn't that interesting to me whatsoever . . . Now if people were actually going to show up and yell at the Mayor for stabbing the Latino Community in the back, THAT is an event I'd be eager to attend.
Yet, despite what you hear on Talk Radio, the Latino Leadership in Kansas City aren't gun toting Mexican nationalists but rather reasonable folks and far too nice. My only hope is that a few people from the neighborhood show up who aren't professional Hispanics and let the Mayor know what they're thinking - Note to the newsies who are forced to cover this event - Just one crazy in the crowd might make for some good TV!!!
A little yelling would be nice but it's probably too much to hope for since so many so-called leaders (who represent no one) are surrendering to Mayor Funky's whim, while the overwhelming majority of Mexican-Americans in Kansas City are for Comprehensive Immigration Reform and against the Minutemen if the attendance of thousands of people a local rallies for these causes over the past two years are any indication.

Comprehensive Immigration Reform means protecting borders, setting reasonable limits and initiating and modifying realistic programs that don't exclude on basis of skin color, language or national origin for starters - sort of getting back to basics.
By the way, this meeting had a very short notice, unlike other town halls that were on the schedule and communicated so that there would be good participation. His staff set this one up quickly. He is showing up on his terms bumping a planned meeting on neighborhood revitalization - non-negotiable - and not very "regular (Latino) folk" friendly at all. So much for listening and being sensitive to the community, Emperor Funkhouser.

The "latinatti" of the westside don't need to "tote guns", they flex their muscle by encouraging their constituency, much of it illegal, to exert pressure by going to marches, vigils and public meetings to provide an asentive chorus to the demands and blackmail disguised as pleas that these political chieftains bleat. This mob husbandry is a typical fare in Latino politics in those third-world-countries that funnel their obligations towards the north.
After the public relations fiasco over the Frances Semler tantrum, the "Latinatti" of the Westside should consider keeping a low profile and nurturing a patina of civility over their bare-knuckles brand of politics.
Here's a news flash: comprehensive immigration reform requires guaranteeing the integrity of our borders, enforcing workplace inspections and levying fines and sentences to those who made the choice to break our laws. It also should forsee a temporary worker's program where a bond is paid, the employer provides health insurance and guarantees that taxes are paid to both our and the worker's country, the worker is here for no more than eight months out of every twelve and the definition of what is birthright citizenship is narrowed down to exclude those who have arrived here illegally or with visas under false pretenses. Taht would take care of most of the issues brought up by those who object to the abuse of our goodwill.
Funkhouser's timing could be worse, but given today's senate vote he'll probably feel like Custer at his last engagement.

This is going to be a riot. I'm going now for sure. Funkface is going to get the pointy end of the stick for something as pointless as an old lady on the parks board.
He kinda deserves it, not because the minutemen are a 'hate group', but for forgetting to reward ALL special interests that vote for him.
He split the minority vote in the town and won. Whites and Hispanics swept him into office. It takes a special kind of arrogance when you win by 800 votes to go out and waggle your dick in the face of one of the two groups who got you there.

Hwe is the mayor. You are not. If the Latino community wants to lay the defeat of comprehensive immigration reform at the feet of Mr. Funkhouser they do so at the peril of their continued marginalization over petty issues and things not under the mayor's control. Talk about dumbasses.
