Funk You Kansas City!!!

Nearly everybody who has a blog is going to provide an analysis of last night's election that will most likely be horribly misleading AND neglect the fact that the only thing Mark Funkhouser did was unite every white person in this city against the Black voting bloc in this town . . . And no matter what the ill-informed local media might report . . . The Funkhouser campaign was NOT A GRASSROOTS EFFORT unless the McClatchy media conglomerate has taken a bigger hit in the market because of declining newspaper ad revenue than has been recently reported.
But I digress . . . The point here is that there was nothing new about Funky's campaign . . . By the way, one of his many new nicknames will now be "Funky" so that we can finally dispense with the booty kissing by every blogger who ever referred to him as "The Funk." Those days are over now given that this first time political office holder will most likely sell out all of the various political constituencies that backed him and will undoubtedly struggle to build any kind of consensus considering that he won the election by little more than one thousand votes.
Additionally, there will be a temptation to declare this "a victory for local blogs!" but, The Star's endorsement of Funkhouser was much more important than the Internet cheering section which did little to influence any candidate's campaign other than provide free PR and a notable lack of any critical thinking or analysis. That's the only part of this election that really bums me out . . . Every blog that commented on the race for Mayor merely resorted to simplistic (and mindless) flag waving . . . Few bloggers wanted to analyze any part of this race . . . They simply wanted to back a winner. Really, the commentary from local blogs regarding the Mayoral race was a waste of bandwidth. All of this amazing freedom . . . To do or write almost anything imaginable and most of what I read was nothing more than slogans and the repeating of stump speeches and talking points. Its was kind of sad really.
But I can't say that the Internet pundits were any worse than the rest of this city . . . And don't get it twisted, I wasn't an Alvin Brooks supporter but I will tell you that I don't feel bad that I wrote in a vote for Charles Wheeler anymore . . . And even that doesn't matter. What's important about Funkhouser's victory his first time out (with the help of his friends at The Star) is that the aftermath of this decision has just started and right now I have just a few highlights of what Kansas City really accomplished last night:
And the list goes on . . . But I doubt the euphoria from the Funkhouser camp has had a chance to fade yet . . . It will take a while (3 months) to realize that the guy is pretty much powerless when it comes to this town's tiny media market, macro economic forces, the social and political climate of this country on the verge of losing another war or the ongoing neglect of the violent deaths of young, Black men on the Eastside that his campaign seemed to capitalize on . . . Seriously, one of the key issues that was never discussed is how poverty, crime and violence are inherently unappealing topics of discussion and Funkhouser's expert dodging of all these issues was undoubtedly part of his success. Funny thing is . . . These problems don't go away just because the mayor doesn't talk about them (Country Club Kay proved that) or because few bloggers bother to post about them . . . They only get worse and the problems have only grown worse ast time goes on -- no matter how many people west of Troost want to address anything but the sad subject.
So, I never had much hope for Brooks and I don't have any faith in Funkhouser . . . What I am looking forward to is that my upcoming entertainment (other than the Sopranos) will consist mainly of watching this guy make one mistake after the next just as any brand new politico might AND watching the inevitable disappointment of his supporters as they somehow never learned that nobody should put so much faith in a politician.

Come on bro you were a brooks supporter...its ok. :-)

All I want to say is ha ha loser.
Wheeler?! WTF? Discuss that. You picked that old white guy for your mayoral protest write-in vote instead of.... anyone else? What am I missing? What did Wheeler do for the city east of Troost when he was mayor?
(But I guess that's the luxury of a "joke" blog, right? You can always blow off anything dense you say that anyone criticizes by saying you were just kidding.)
Jack Craft isn't white? What about Kay Barnes? Old Alvin had plenty of white people on his side. And Alvin himself is so handsome he might as well be white. He's whiter in that regard than Funkhouser.
Wow. It would almost be worth the time trying to debate you on this. Or even that a lot of your claims are unfounded but... I've come to the conclusion that while living in KC my whole life, you do a great job of digging up blogs that I would otherwise not find. I thank you. But there is nothing 'comedic' or funny about your constant, incessant, and quite frankly, disgusting amount of griping crying and negativity. It just gets old.
Try another approach, maybe be positive and give the guy a chance. If you don't like it you can write in Chuck Eddy in 4 years.
Ah, the beauty of blogs. Where the ignorant, the bitter and the racist have just as much space to do their thing as do the informed, engaged bloggers who research the candidates, make Sunshine requests, and do real journalism.
Hope you're having fun down there in mom's basement, Tony. Yeah, I don't guess your world will change that much because the better candidate has been elected. Basement walls and online porn tend to stay pretty much the same no matter who's in office.
Kansas city becareful of what you ask for cause you might just get it. The funk is in the house. I like when politicians say I'm going to do this and that, you're not going to do anything okay pal.
Don't make the mistake of thinking the Mayor of KC has anything to do with "fighting" crime in KC. The police department does not answer to the mayor.
It was a grassroots effort, because the surge came from below, even though the Star endorsed him.
It's too bad Brooks wasn't elected for one reason: We could have learned exactly what his actual ideas were, beyond saying "this election is about coming together, I see a lot of different faces out there..." etc. No It Wasn't.
Maybe he could have explained what the hell "positive leadership" and "constructive change" meant. Useless words and phrases.
Brooks is a nice man, a good man, a smart man... he's better suited though as the guy to call with tips, to turn yourself in and to carry the candles at the "vigils".
Pandering to the ghetto vote hasn't done anything in the past. Maybe people were tired of the mantra and simply chose an ideology that is not quite as stale.
Fighting crime and saving the ghetto are words that lose their luster as politicos recite them over and over again every other year.
And guess what, we need shitholes. I sure as hell don’t want those people living next to me. And by “those people” I do not mean any single race or creed. The trash in the ghetto is every color of the rainbow and until the Sunday church services and candlelight vigils become less about socializing and more about getting off your ass and doing something the ghetto is going to stay the ghetto and the trash will still be trash.
I think either candidate would be a good leader in their own way. At least Funky will make KCMO govt. interesting as a spectator sport.
You make me laugh, Tony. So, The Star is "irrelevant" in many of your posts, but now that you want to attempt to prove something, The Star was a major factor in getting Funkhouser elected?
Keep reaching, idiot.
tony, you're missing the most important part of this victory: funkhouser has a hot daughter.
Tony,
You say that by electing Funkhouser, voters supported a first time politician with absolutely no record of civic or community involvement and little to no close contacts in those areas. Which brings me to my question: if 18 years as city auditor does not qualify as civic or community involvement, what does?
i think you would have bitched and called it racist no matter who won. brooks is in kays backpocket and we are all tired of that shit.
The police dept. is unrelated to the mayor's office. And as far as yr incessant whining about officials stopping crime, you can quit- officials make official decisions and solve administrative problems, criminals make personal decisions and cause crime.
Funkhouser's pledged that the metal plates will be removed from KC streets, which'll solve plenty road rage crimes-
Epic post my man
Did I miss something? Did Tony work for the Brooks campaign?
This post is just complete bullshit.
The Jesus reference is a nice touch because so many people who supported don't have faith in anything but politics.
"Don't make the mistake of thinking the Mayor of KC has anything to do with "fighting" crime in KC. The police department does not answer to the mayor."
Now that's just the stupidest thing I've ever read on this blog. Much worse than anything Tony has ever written. And that's saying a lot.
Get real Condochiefs, I can't think of a better description of the Funkhouser campaign than a "disgusting amount of griping crying and negativity"...Tony hit the nail on the head. How will this guy ever encourage growth or investment in KC. The suburban pobahs are ecstatic...KC has just taken itself out of the game.
I do think it's rather ironic that Tony sits here and complains about how race and white people voted for the funk based off of color. And all he has to show about the Funk are derogatory images of his likeness. Nothing like the smell of piping hot hypocrisy.
Some advice: Take the opposite of what Tony says in this post and you're closer to the truth than he usually ever is.
Man, you sound like a grumpy old man. How old are you again?
I know who you are!
boo-hoo. Already the Funk supporters fold under the slightest bit of criticism.
Go Funk youself Tony!
Bravo!
I used to read this blog with enthusiasm, but this post is part and parcel with the rest of the content from TKC lately. It drips with idiocy, hypocrisy, half-baked conclusions, meanness and cowardice. It's pretty disappointing. Tony, I hope you start writing with the humor and levity that drew me and many others to this blog originally and not this dreadfully boring negativity.
(But I guess that's the luxury of a "joke" blog, right? You can always blow off anything dense you say that anyone criticizes by saying you were just kidding.)
That's right, HeidiHo!
And by golly I think you've got it, ray barker.
Take a nap, kiddies. ALL y'all (especially anonymoose/10:16 pm -- get a life, dawg!).
caroline is kinda flat-chested isn't she?
