Don't Believe Beacon Hill PR from The Star

This article is about minority home ownership and urban renewal would be wonderful it was true but it's not. It's a nice story about a lady buying a cheap house in the 'hood. And I only want to ask one question: If Beacon Hill is so nice, then why do so many Star staffers live in JoCo?

If you were looking for a highly politicized article trying to put a happy face on a recent housing scandal then by all means believe everything you read but the missive shouldn't be taken seriously for anyone who actually wants information about the local real estate market.

Wow. A housing project that goes awry? But I thought that city officials always knew exactly what they were doing....

You're right on the money about most Star reporters living in JoCo. But you know, they CARE about the urban core. Really they do. Just as long as they can keep on livin' in Leawood.

Kinda care about the urban core...remember the Star sold it's soul to keep the stadiums in Raytown, which is a much easier commute on I-435 from JoCo, and you don't run the risk of actually seeing minorities while driving to/from the game. My favorite thing the Star does is when they have an article that polls people from around KC, like their cheesy Valentines Day "love stories." They always have the white people from a JoCo city, then blacks and/or hispanics from either KCMO or KCK, and the obvious gay guy from KCMO. There is never any variation. It shows how the Star staffers see the area, certain people MUST live certain places. What progressive thinking from our preachy rag!

there really aren't that many homes you can live in as-is right now in beacon hill.

the rest of tracy avenue where the new super-slick homes are on the 2500-block is somewhat vacant, which is the only reason we considered buying there.

i'm sure the hundreds of houses planned for the next five years are "good," but the best part is that no one will be paying property taxes for 25 years. the taxes are in the $300-$500 range on the rehabs anyway. and walking distance to the health department, what could be better.

(yes, i know they pay some taxes after 10 years, but the last 15 are still deeply discounted. no help for schools from beacon hill, at least until the kids have already graduated . . .and it's not like there are any schools that close to beacon hill anyway)
